Published 1993Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2044Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: One hundred and sixty-nine patients (aged 65–98 years) were randomised to receive either local or general anaesthesia for cataract surgery. Cognitive function was assessed using a battery of psychometric tests performed pre-operatively, and at 24 h, 2 weeks and 3 months postoperatively. Oxygen saturation, blood pressure and heart rate were monitored and the results recorded throughout the anaesthetic and immediate recovery period. In the general anaesthetic group, 19% of patients experienced at least one episode of oxygen desaturation during the procedure compared with none in the local anaesthetic group. Pulse rate and blood pressure were stable in the local anaesthetic group compared with the general anaesthetic group where marked fluctuations were noted; 61% of patients in the general anaesthetic group experienced falls in systolic blood pressure greater than 30% of the pre-induction value. No evidence of long-term postoperative cognitive dysfunction was detected and there was no significant difference between the performances of the two groups.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1551-2916Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsPhysicsNotes: Monotonic and cyclic fatigue behavior of single fibers or fiber fabrics are of significant interest, since fiber assemblies or fiber-reinforced composite materials in structural applications are often subjected to cyclic loading. Studying the cyclic fatigue behavior of fibers is particularly difficult because of their small diameter (∼10 μm) and high aspect ratio. In this paper, we report results of monotonic tension and tension–tension fatigue behavior of two sol–gel-derived ceramic fibers: Al2O3–SiO2–B2O3 (Nextel 312) and Al2O3 (Nextel 610). Nextel 312 exhibited a great deal of variability in tensile strength, reflected by a Weibull modulus of 4.6, versus Nextel 610, which had a Weibull modulus of 10.5. Our experiments showed clearly that cyclic loading was more damaging than static loading and, thus, resulted in a lower cyclic fatigue life compared with static loading. The fracture behavior under fatigue loading was distinctly different from that under monotonic loading. It is believed that processing-induced flaws acted as crack initiation sites, and that the cyclic loading induced subcritical cracking, followed by coalescence of cracks immediately prior to failure.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The emitter saturation current density (JOe) and surface recombination velocity (Sp) of various high quality passivation schemes on phosphorus-diffused solar cell emitters have been determined and compared. The passivation schemes investigated were (i) stoichiometric plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon nitride (SiN), (ii) forming gas annealed thermally grown silicon oxide, and (iii) aluminum annealed (alnealed) thermal silicon oxide. Emitters with sheet resistances ranging from 30 to 430 and 50 to 380 Ω/(square, open) were investigated for planar and random-pyramid textured silicon surfaces, which covers both industrial and laboratory emitters. The electronic surface passivation quality provided by PECVD SiN films was found to be good, with Sp values ranging from 1400 to 25 000 cm/s for planar emitters. Thin thermal silicon oxides were found to provide superior passivation to PECVD SiN, with the best passivation provided by an alnealed thin oxide (Sp values between 250 and 21 000 cm/s). The optimized PECVD SiN films are, nevertheless, sufficiently good for most silicon solar cell applications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The study group comprised 10 SAH patients and 10 controls. CSF total nitrite/nitrate (NOx) concentration was measured by a vanadium-based assay while OxyHb level by spectrophotometry. There was a significant correlation between CSF concentrations of NOx and OxyHb (P = 0.001, r = 0.87). When the impact of bleeding into CSF was considered, patients with good outcome had significantly lower CSF NOx than those with bad outcome (P = 0.007). This study demonstrates that after SAH, CSF NOx levels correlate with OxHb and high CSF NOx predicted poor outcome.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Thirty-two per cent of patients with primary infertility and 60 per cent of patients with secondary infertility had significant pelvic disease. We feel that laparoscopy should replace other methods for the routine primary assessment of the genital tract in subfertile women.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
