This paper discusses some of the strengths and weaknesses of port labour reform ten years after the abolition of the National Dock Labour Scheme, using taped interviews with both employers and trade unions within the industry and the writings of interested parties. It represents their views and opinions on some aspects of the industry before and after abolition. The paper discusses briefly the history of the National Dock Labour Scheme and its downfall. It then analyses the results of the de-regulation in terms of economic and operational success, employment, training and social costs.

Relative influence of BAP and IBA on the induction of adventitious buds and roots on plantelts of Biota orientalis (Cupressaceae)Both cytokinin (BAP) and auxin (IBA) have an influence upon the intensity of adventitious bud induction in vitro on hypocotyls of Biota orientalis.Increase in either the concentration or the length of contact with cytokinin enhances the mean number of neoformed buds per explant, while that of auxin results in an increase of the mean number of reactive explants as well as in the nature of neoformations. Auxin contributes to a restoration of the induction when the length of contact with cytokinin is too short. However, this synergism is only observed when the contract with IBA is simultaneous or follows that with contract with BAP.Rhizogenesis is also influenced by the auxin-cytokinin balance. An increase in the duration of contact with IBA is always followed by an increased in the mean number of explants forming roots. This organogenesis may be partially or completely inhibited if the duration of contact with cytokinin – before, simultaneously or after that with auxin- exceeds two weeks.

Abstract Anin situ scanning electron microscope study of the effect of heat treatment on the structural integrity of undoped and phosphorus-doped glow discharge amorphous silicon films, deposited on crystalline silicon and pyrex 7059 glass substrates, has been undertaken. A similar, albeit more limited, investigation has been carried out on freely supported glow discharge films and one reactively sputtered Si-supported film. Glow discharge films, prepared at temperatures 〉70° C on silicon substrates, exhibit “blistering” of the surface at dehydrogenation temperatures, namely, 〉270° C. Ultimately, the “blisters” burst forming circular craters which reveal the underlying substrate. A similar phenomenon was observed in the case of a reactively sputtered film. In contrast, films prepared on silicon substrates at nominally room temperature exhibit more complex behaviour in which complete disintegration of the film occurs. Neither of the above effects was observed, on heat treatment, for amorphous silicon films which were either freely supported or deposited on pyrex glass.

Abstract Two polymorphs of tolbutamide have been crystallised from a variety of solvents and studied by differential scanning calorimetry, optical and X-ray crystallography, and infra-red and Raman spectroscopy. The cell dimensions and space groups of the two forms have been obtained and the effect of repeated heating and cooling on the structures of the two polymorphs has been determined.

Abstract Metakaolinite was prepared from kaolinite by thermal treatment. Subsequent reaction of the metakaolinite with calcium hydroxide and water resulted in a cementitious material whose reaction kinetics were followed at a molecular level at both ambient and elevated temperatures using trimethylsilylation. Metakaolinite as a mineral admixture to ordinary Portland cement was also investigated.

Abstract The121Sb Mössbauer spectra of a series of Na2O-B2O3-Sb2O3, (Na2O, 2P2O5) + Sb2O3, and (Na2O, 2SiO2) + Sb2O3 glasses have been measured. The chemical isomer shifts,δ, and the quadrupole couplings,eQV zz, for antimony (III) in different glasses have been estimated. From the changes of isomer shift is has been deduced that the ionicity of the Sb-O bond increases with decreasing Na2O content in Na2O-B2O3-Sb2O3 glasses; and when the network former is changed, with equivalent molar composition, the ionicity of the Sb-O bond increased in the order borate ⩽ silicate 〈 phosphate.
