The Ti, V, or Co additions increase the anisotropy field. The additions of these elements are favorable for the magnet fabrication. The magnet fabrication has been carried out by the Zn metal bonding and mechanical alloying. The (BH)max is 8.7 MGOe and the iHc is 14 kOe for the Zn-bonded magnet. Histological studies demonstrated vasculitis in deep dermal vessels accompanied by C3 deposition. Laboratory investigation revealed lupus-like abnormalities (leucocytopenia, positive antinuclear and antidouble strand (ds) DNA antibodies, and positive ANCA). The leg ulcers dramatically improved after methimazole was withdrawn. In addition, leucocytopenia and the immunological abnormalities soon laded. Although lupus-like syndrome is well known to be induced by antithyroid drugs, vasculitis is a rare complication. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing ANCA-associated vasculitis caused by methimazole.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2004Staff ViewISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Proportions of maturing fish and reproductive output [egg size, relative fecundity, spermatocrit and gonado-somatic index (IG)] were studied in repeat-spawning (+4 year old) male and female Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, subjected to periods of fasting. Groups of individually tagged Arctic charr were fasted for c. 3, 6, 7 and 9 months, from November 1998. In the period February to November 1999, size (fork length and mass), specific growth rate (G), condition factor (K) and plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), oestradiol-17β(E2; females) and 11-ketotestosterone (11KT; males), were monitored monthly. Maturing fish in each group started to gain mass soon after food was made available, and both sexes reached the highest K and G c. 2 months after the onset of feeding. The fasting regimes resulted in different growth patterns during spring and summer when energy stores are normally replenished in Arctic charr, and K prior to the breeding season was significantly higher in the groups fasted for 3 and 6 months compared to the groups fasted for 7 and 9 months. There were significant positive correlations between K during the period prior to the breeding season and reproductive output in terms of the IG, spermatocrit and relative fecundity. There was, however, no clear relationship between the length of starvation and the proportion of maturing fish. Likewise, no clear relationships were found between reproductive development and plasma levels of GH and IGF-I, although both showed marked seasonal changes, being ‘down-regulated’ during winter months and ‘up-regulated’ throughout summer months.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Effects of illumination intensity on the nearest neighbour distance (NND) of coho salmon in an experimental aquarium were studied under illumination intensities ranging from 0 to 4000 Ix. The NNDs in sighted (intact) fish were divided into three groups according to the illumination intensities; the largest [1.15 times fork length (f.l.)] at 0 1x, the medium (0.78 to 0.84 f.l.) at 0.01 to 0.4 1x, and the least (0.60 to 0.66 f.l.) at 4–4000 1x. The fact that NNDs under 4 1x or higher illumination conditions were significantly smaller than those under 0.01 to 0.4 1x conditions suggests a change from photopic to scotopic vision. Blinded fish exhibited constant NNDs irrespective of illumination intensity and the value was similar to that of sighted fish under the 0 1x condition. The NNDs of blinded fish and sighted fish exposed to 0 1x were larger than the simulated NND calculated by hypothesizing that fish distribute randomly in the experimental aquarium. These results indicate that NND in a coho school is maintained primarily by vision, however, the NND is not determined by vision alone but by integrated senses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In this study, the role of apoptosis in the maintenance and homeostasis of the intrahepatic biliary tree was evaluated.Methods and resultsBy counting apoptotic biliary cells and by immunostaining apoptosis-related proteins in normal liver, fatty liver, and those with acute viral hepatitis, chronic viral hepatitis, and hepatitis virus-related cirrhosis, it was found that the larger the intrahepatic bile ducts became, the more biliary epithelial cells underwent apoptosis. bcl-2, an inhibitor of apoptosis, was diffusely expressed in the interlobular bile ducts, but rarely detectable in the large and septal bile ducts. bcl-XL and mcl-1, inhibitors of apoptosis, and bax, a promoter of apoptosis, were diffusely expressed along the intrahepatic biliary tree. CD95, a direct inducer of apoptosis, was present in the large and septal bile ducts, but rarely in the interlobular bile ducts.ConclusionThe ratio of bax to bcl-2, as well as the expression of CD95 which differed at the interlobular versus large and septal bile ducts, may be responsible for the unique distribution of apoptotic biliary cells and involved in the homeostasis of the intrahepatic biliary tree.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Using this patient's serum (EBA serum) and three bullous pemphigoid (BP) sera, the anatomical distribution and immunological character-istics of EBA antigen and BP antigen were investigated by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). EBA antigen showed the same anatomical distribution as BP antigen in DIF and IIF studies; both antigens were limited to the skin, tongue, oesophagus, trachea, cornea and bladder. EBA antigen was located on the dermal side of both NaCI and PBS-separated skin, whereas BP antigen was limited to the epidermal side. Ethanol fixation abrogated the antigenic stability of BP antigen, but not that of HBA antigen. No difference was found when acetone or formalin fixation was used. The separation methods and prefixation in ethanol could be useful techniques applicable to the classification of the bullous disorders which manifest circulating anti-BMZ antibodies.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
