ISSN: 1432-0614Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Summary Erwinia herbicola (Enterobacter agglomerans), belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae, produces the lipopeptide antibiotics herbicolin A and B, which are active against sterol-containing fungi. Fermentation of these antibiotics was performed in 20-1 stirred glass fermentors in a batch process. Best yields of antibiotic production were found at low cultivation temperatures in a TRIS-buffered chemically defined medium. Under these conditions the amount of impurities aggravating the purification was minimized. Isolation was performed by adsorption, and gel and ion exchange chromatographic techniques. In a final purification step preparative high performance liquid chromatography (PHPLC) yielded pure herbicolin A.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

An 81-year-old female with renovascular disease underwent a laparoscopic excisional operation for a 2-cm tumor localized in the left kidney. Pathological evaluation showed a low-grade tumor without any extension through the renal capsule (grade I Hand Broder, stage I Robson). The postoperative course was uneventful; there was minimal postoperative pain. The patient was discharged home on the sixth day. Laparoscopic excision would appear to be a safe and effective technique in selected cases.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-7438Keywords: age ; anaemia ; cattle ; Glossina ; prevalence ; serology ; trypanosomeSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract The prevalence of trypanosomosis, mean packed cell volume and anti-trypanosomal antibody levels in village cattle of different age groups (〈0.5 year, 0.5–2 years, 〉2–5 years and 〉5 years) in the areas with tsetse control were compared with those of corresponding age groups in areas without tsetse control in Tororo, southeast Uganda. The prevalence of trypanosomosis in cattle in the age groups of 0.5–2 years, 〉2–5 years and 〉5 years in the areas with tsetse control was significantly lower than in cattle in similar age groups in the areas without tsetse control (p〈0.5). Trypanosoma vivax was the most predominant Trypanosoma species in the areas with tsetse control, while T. congolense was the most predominant species in the areas without tsetse control. The mean Trypanosoma antibody levels in cattle in the age groups 〈0.5 year, 0.5–2 years and 〉2–5 years in the areas with tsetse control were significantly lower than those of the similar age groups in the areas without tsetse control (p〈0.5). The mean PCV values for cattle in the age groups 0.5–2 years, 〉2–5 years and 〉5 years from the areas with tsetse control were significantly higher than those of the similar age groups in the areas without tsetse control. Tsetse control appeared to have a considerable impact on the prevalence of trypanosomosis, distribution of Trypanosoma species, specific antibody levels and the packed cell volume of cattle in the different age groups.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
