Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The inner-valence electron states of the methane molecule have been studied by means of x-ray, synchrotron radiation, and UV-photoelectron spectroscopy. Five correlation satellites have been identified and a detailed study has been carried out of the 2a−11 single hole state. For this state a Franck–Condon analysis has been performed, suggesting an equilibrium bond distance of 1.279 A(ring). The vibrational lines have a Lorentzian shape and the linewidth increases gradually with the vibrational quantum number. This probably indicates a reduction of the lifetime of the vibrational states due to predissociation. A discussion of the potential curves related to the correlation satellites is included.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The design includes a double focusing, nonblazed, toroidal grating with a groove density of 800 l/mm. The adjustment and focusing properties of the design have been studied using an optical simulation program. It is found that all necessary adjustments of the grating may be performed by using only two degrees of freedom; rotation and sidewise shifting. Inner and outer valence photoelectron spectra of N2 and CO have been recorded using monochromatized HeIIα radiation. The study reveals extensive vibrational structures in the inner valence region of both molecules. A new state has been identified in the CO molecule.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1365-3083Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: This paper reports on differences between B cell-type chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL) and normal B cells in their response to IL-2+thioredoxin (Trx), Staphylococcus aureus Cowan strain 1 (SAC)+IL-2+Trx, and to CD40 ligation of IL-2+Trx and SAC+IL-2+Trx stimulation. The authors found that Trx acted synergistically with IL-2 and SAC+IL-2 in inducing DNA synthesis in B-CLL cells, but not in the normal B cells. Interestingly, IL-2+Trx alone was found to induce proliferation in B-CLL cells from patients with advanced stages of disease. In addition, we also found that IL-2+Trx and SAC+IL-2+Trx-induced DNA synthesis of B-CLL cells was inhibited by CD40 activation (by soluble anti-CD40 MoAb and anti-CD40 MoAb presented on irradiated CD32L cells). In clear contrast, SAC+IL-2+Trx-induced DNA synthesis of normal B cells was not inhibited by soluble anti-CD40 MoAb. The authors therefore conclude that B-CLL cells differ from normal B cells in their response to IL-2 (IL-2+Trx) and CD40 ligation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2516Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: This article reviews the pharmacokinetics of exogenous factor VIII and factor IX in patients with haemophilia. It focuses on the methodology (and inherent pitfalls) of pharmacokinetic studies, then summarizes available pharmacokinetic data and finally discusses some applications of pharmacokinetics for optimization of prophylactic treatment of haemophilia and for comparison of coagulation factor concentrates.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2516Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of optimizing prophylactic dosing of factor VIII by the use of individual pharmacokinetic data. Twenty-one patients were enrolled in a randomized cross-over study on standard dosage regimens vs. dosing according to pharmacokinetic principles. The study period was 2×6 months. Using single-dose pharmacokinetic data for each patient, plasma factor VIII procoagulant activity (FVIII:C) curves following various doses and intervals were computer-simulated. From these calculations, a suitable dosage was chosen. FVIII:C was also repeatedly measured during study periods. Trough levels of FVIII:C, numbers of spontaneous joint bleedings and amounts of factor concentrate used during the two study periods were compared for each patient. There was a close correlation between predicted and measured values of FVIII:C. As the half-lives of FVIII:C in the patients varied from 7.8 to 18.3 h, it was obviously beneficial to base the dosage on individual pharmacokinetic data. Fourteen patients completed both study periods. Mean trough level of exogenous FVIII:C was raised from 0.89 (SD 0.73) U dL−1 during standard dosage to 2.2 (1.5) U dL−1 during pharmacokinetic dosage. Concomitantly, mean 6-month consumption of factor VIII was decreased from 124 000 (SD 30 000) units to 84 000 (31 000) units. Numbers of reported bleedings were generally similar during both periods. The study demonstrates the usefulness of individual pharmacokinetics as a tool for cost-effective utilization of factor VIII in the prophylactic treatment of haemophilia A.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
