Through construction of the impedance function a deterministic estimation of the wavelet and the reflectivity can be obtained. This idea is tested for a one-dimensional model. The test is carried out by forming a synthetic seismogram of both pressure and particle velocity and checking the formulas for obtaining the estimated wavelet under noisy conditions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In order to study the analytic properties of the kernel, necessary and sufficient conditions on it's poles and zeroes are developed. A distinction is made between “physical” and “perfect” models. It is shown that a physical model may be determined from either the set of poles or the set of zeroes of the raised kernel function at the top of the model. These roots may be of desired multiplicities. For determining a perfect model, both sets of poles and zeroes are required and they all have to be simple ones.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2478Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesPhysicsNotes: The manner in which boundary conditions are approximated and introduced into finite difference schemes may have an important influence on the stability and accuracy of the results. The standard von Neumann condition for stability applies only for points which are not in the vicinity of the boundaries. This stability condition does not take into consideration the effects caused by introducing the boundary conditions to the scheme.Working on elastic media with free stress boundary conditions we found that the boundary approximation gives rise to serious stability problems especially for regions with high Poisson's ratio. In order to detect these effects apriori and to analyse them, we have used a more elaborate procedure for checking the stability of the scheme which takes into consideration the boundary conditions. It is based on studying a locally spaced time propagating matrix which governs the time-space behavior of a small region of the grid which includes free surface points.By using this procedure a better insight into the nature of instability caused by the approximations to the boundary conditions was gained which led us to a new stable approximation for the free surface boundary conditions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A simplified description of the method is given together with an account of some of the practical programming problems and the types of inaccuracy encountered. Routine production results are considered to be comparable or superior to the results derived from alternative migration techniques. Particular advantages are 1) the possibility of using a detailed velocity model for the migration and 2) the preservation of the amplitude and character of the seismic events on the migrated time section.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The examinations were performed with the use of diagnostic x-ray spectrometry, a method based on x-ray fluorescence for in vivo noninvasive evaluation of trace elements. Four skin foci were examined: at the periphery of the ulcer and control areas in a nonulcerated area in the diseased leg, in the noninvolved leg, and in the proximal inner surface of the arm. Zinc levels around the ulcer (mean ± SD, 9·8 ± 4·0 μg of zinc in 1 g of wet tissue) were higher than those in the nonulcerated skin in the diseased leg (6·9 ± 3·0 μg/g, p〉0·05) and those in the noninvolved leg (5·4 ± 2·0 μg/g, p〈0·01). The concentration of zinc in the inner proximal surface of the arm (9·8 ± 2·8 μg/g) was significantly higher than those of a control group (5·3 ± 1·9 μg/g, P〈0·01). These results suggest a defect of zinc distribution in patients with varicose vein ulcers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

One hundred and fifteen ASA 1 or 2 patients scheduled for minor surgery were studied using a randomised, double-blind design. Thiopentone was more effective than lignocaine in reducing the incidence of propofol injection pain (p 〈 0.03).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This paper examines the care provision for people suffering from dementia and explores the potential benefits associated with an approach to care that emphasizes the importance of relationships. Background. Recent research findings have provided an incentive to re-evaluate the established approaches to care for this client group. Two separate studies identified education and intellectual stimulation as important determinants of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease (Ott et al. 1995, Snowdon et al. 1996). These findings have encouraged the hypothesis that potential symptomatic benefits may be achieved by providing a more stimulating environment for people with dementia. Methods. A case study is outlined which illustrates an approach to caring influenced by the Continental philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas. Primacy is given to the relationships that make up caring, and not to a method that sets out to achieve an identified objective. The issue of mutual responsibility within the provision of care is highlighted in the case study. Findings. The hypothesis presented in this paper is that a person has more of an opportunity to develop to the limits of their potential by establishing the importance of relationships in providing care by means of education and training of the people involved. The beneficiaries might be the caregiver or the person in receipt of care. Conclusions. An environment that attempts to educate people to recognize the importance of relationships will be more effective in achieving the potential benefits of symptom alleviation identified by the research into Alzheimer’s disease outlined in this paper.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1752-0118Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicinePsychologyNotes: This article is about the location of meaning and‘truth’in what our clients say. The concept of cover story is outlined and this is then applied to a‘Freudian slip’. Various positions we take relative to the story are outlined. This is followed by three imaginary analyses by Freud, Laing and Lacan which demonstrate how the locus of truth can vary depending on our approach. The discussion of Lacan compares him favourably with many postmodernists, for whom the notion of truth has slipped away altogether.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
