Summary The effect of β-adrenergic receptor-inhibitors was examined in relation to the effectiveness of radioprotective agents. The results, when mice were irradiated, show that the receptor-inhibitors significantly reduced the effect of the applied protectors.

    Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary In 42 patients 59 operative stabilizations were carried out, and radiotherapy was applied 254 times to 99 patients. For regaining mechanical stability the use of radiotherapy is limited in skeletal metastases. Only in 31.3 % were the metastases recalcified. On the other hand, operative stabilization is reliable. The functional results were better, especially in the femur, when stabilization was carried out prophylactically. After prophylactic treatment 93.7 % of the patients were able to walk and 73.3 % of the patients when pathologic fractures had already occurred. Intramedullary nailing proved to be superior.

Summary The irradiation sensitivity of the cytochrome system was investigated, using as examples baker's yeast andE. coli. A method is described with which the proportion of reduced cytochrome in cell suspensions could be measured spectrometrically. In contrast to isolated cytochrome, which is easily oxydized by Roentgen rays, the cytochrome of living cells is very stable to Roentgen rays. The electrone transport is not influenced by high energy rays. It is probable that the hydrogen transport is also undisturbed. Only if the cell is so damaged by high doses of rays that every exchange of substances is impossible, i.e. if the cell is dead, is the ferrocytochrome oxydized and perhaps also destroyed. The oxydation is thus a secondary process resulting from death of the cell by rays. It is supposed that the changes in energy metabolism described in the literature, especially the disturbances of oxydative phosphorylation, are also secondary processes. The concepts developed in radiochemistry on the action of high energy rays on organic compounds must therefore be especially tested in each case for their application in the living cell.

    Description / Table of Contents:
Summary The author describes a method of quantitative hemagglutination. The method is based on the colorimetric determination of hemolysis of a testerythrocyte-stream of known concentration, into which, amongst others, serum samples are pumped. If antibodies are present in the sera, agglutinates form. These, due to their higher gravity at decanter-T-pieces, precipitate out of the system and are pumped out at the same time. Extinction is decreased by this quantity. The extinction difference is directly proportional to the antibody content. This method is used for the testing of the effect of radiation protection-substances on the cell system of irradiated mammals which forms specific antibodies.
    Notes:
