    Abstract Organic chromophores are of interest for use in remote luminescent chemical sensor applications, as they can be highly sensitive to conditions such as oxygen concentration, pH, temperature, metal ion activity, etc. Small fluctuations in local environmental parameters can lead to substantial perturbations in the optical properties of select organic probe molecules. Lifetime studies were performed on the S1 emission of tetra-4-sulfonatophenylporphyrin and the zinc (II) and cadmium (II) adducts in sol-gel derived aluminosilicate hosts. Vibronically-coupled quenching was observed to occur as a function of the complexed transition metal ion.

    Resumen En el matorral premontano de Chile se estudiaron algunas partes del ciclo de nitrógeno de dos de sus dominantes (Lithraea caustica y Quillaria saponaria) durante 15 meses. Los análisis mostraron que los ingresos de nitrógeno por lluvia y deposición seca fueron de 8,5 kg N ha−1 año−1; este valor podría ser mayor si se considera el ingreso adicional por impactación de compuestos nitrogenados sobre la vegetación (no medido). Debido a su mayor cobertura porcentual,L. caustica contribuyó con mas hojarasca queQ. saponaria obteniendose valores de 1089 y 737 kg ha−1 materia seca año−1 respectivamente. Sin embargo, al considerar el area bajo los individuos,Q. saponaria produjo mas hojarasca queL. caustica (640vs 350 g materia seca m−2 año−1. Durante la descomposición de la hojarasca,L. caustica liberó 2,61 g N kg−1 hojarasca seca año mientras queQ. saponaria liberó 0,60 g N kg−1 hojarasca seca año−1.

    Abstract Parts of the nitrogen cycle involving two dominants (Lithraea caustica andQuillaja saponaria) in the Chilean piedmont matorral have been studied over a 15-month period. Analyses showed that 8.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 entered the system in rainfall and dry deposition, though impaction of N-containing compounds on vegetation (not measured) may elevate this value.L. caustica, by virtue of its greater percent cover, contributed more leaf litter than didQ. saponaria to the system (1089,vs 737 kg dry matter ha−1 yr−1, respectively), although on an individual basisQ. saponaria produced more litter (640,vs 350 g dry leaf litter m−2 yr−1 rL. caustica). This plus the greater nitrogen release ofL. caustica leaf litter during decomposition (2.61,vs 0.60 g N kg dry litter−1 yr−1 forQ. saponaria) andQ. saponaria's higher N-content of dropped leaves (0.54,vs 0.37% N forL. caustica) may indicate a more external cycling of nitrogen inQ. saponaria relative to that inL. caustica. These two species may therefore represent two different strategies of individual nitrogen cycling, external and internal.

    Summary Recent studies on calcium regulation of muscle contraction selectively extract troponin C (TnC) from skinned skeletal muscle fibres with a low ionic strength rigor solution containing a Ca2+/Mg2+ chelator. As previous results from this laboratory and others demonstrate a crossbridge effect, especially rigor, on many of the properties of TnC, the effects of filament overlap on TnC extraction from skinned rabbit psoas muscle fibres were investigated. Tension-pCa relationships at a sarcomere length of 2.7 μm were determined before and after a 5 min TnC extraction at sarcomere lengths of 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.1, 3.3 or 3.5 μm with 20 mm Tris, pH 7.8, 5 mm EDTA. The decrease in the post-extraction maximum Ca2+ activated tension, an indicator of the amount of TnC extracted, was linearly related to the overlap of the thick and thin filaments with decreases in tension being associated with a decrease in filament overlap. The smaller fibre diameter at the longer sarcomere length could facilitate diffusion of TnC from fibre segments. However, the wide range of measured diameters, 40–120 μm, accounted for only 14% of the observed tension decrement and shrinking the fibre with polyvinylpyrrolidone did not increase the tension decrement. Increasing the sarcomere length before extraction was also found to decrease the TnC content of fibre segments along with the post-extraction maximum tension. Thus, TnC appears to be preferentially extracted from non-overlap than overlap regions of the sarcomere. These results further indicate that rigor crossbridges affect TnC other than through increased Ca2+ binding and that under the conditions used here, they retard its extraction.

    Abstract Copper mining activities are very important in central Chile.Like other metals, copper is a nutrient for most plants at lowconcentration levels; however, at higher levels it may becometoxic. At present, copper abundance in mediterraneanecosystems is unknown both for vegetation and soils. In thisstudy, two localities of the Coastal Range in central Chilewere studied. Copper content was found to be mainly related tosite type, and secondly to the components of the ecosystem.Copper contents are similar to other mediterranean ecosystemsof the world. Soil was found to represent the main source ofdata variation.
