Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce the severity of this pruritus but have undesirable side effects. The recent development of drugs that can specifically inhibit the cyclooxygenase 2 isoenzyme have become an attractive alternative. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of such a drug (celecoxib) in reducing intrathecal opioid-induced pruritus in a randomised double-blinded study of 60 women undergoing Caesarean section. All of them received spinal anaesthesia with 3 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine and 0.3 mg preservative-free morphine. After delivery of the baby, they received either oral celecoxib 200 mg or placebo. Visual analogue scores for pain and pruritus were measured at 30 min, 2, 4, 8, and 24 h. There was no difference in the severity and onset of pain and pruritus between the two groups. Timing of administration, inadequate dosing and possible altered pharmacokinetics in pregnancy may explain the lack of efficacy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0924Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract An elastic-plastic thin shell finite element suitable for problems of finite deformation in sheet metal forming is formulated. Hill's yield criterion for sheet materials of normal anisotropy is applied. A nonlinear shell theory in a form of an incremental variational principle and a quasi-conforming element technique are employed in the Lagrangian formulation. The shell element fulfills the inter-element C 1 continuity condition in a variational sense and has a sufficient rank to allow finite stretching, rotation and bending of the shell element. The accuracy and efficiency of the finite element formulation are illustrated by numerical examples.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-8798Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. The sequence of RNA genome segment S4 of the avian reovirus (ARV) strain S1133 was determined. S4 RNA is 1185 base pairs long and contains one open reading frame encoding a protein of 367 amino acid residues (40.6 kDa), the similar size as the known S4 gene product (σ NS), with a net charge of −1 at neutral pH. The S4 RNA sequence possesses a pentanucleotide sequence UCAUC at the 3′-terminus of its plus strand like in ARV S1 and S3 segments and ten segments of mammalian reovirus (MRV). The predicted amino acid sequence comparison revealed that the homology is 44.02%, 45.71%, and 42.33% for ARV σ NS and three serotypes of MRV σ NS, respectively. The relatively high content of α-helix structure in the C-terminal portion of ARV σ NS suggests that this protein may functionally relate to MRV σ NS. Northern blot hybridization showed that a 32P-labeled cDNA insert S4-49 from ARV S4 RNA cross-hybridized with the corresponding RNA segments of all seven strains of ARV tested.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
