At a particular molar ratio of the initiators, similar maximum rates of polymerization can be achieved from using both types of the initiators. In addition, both initiated systems produced microlatexes with similar hydrodynamic radius, number of polymer particles, molecular weight of polystyrene and number of polymer chain per latex particle. But the dependencies of these latex parameters on concentrations of KPS and AIBN may not be the same. The polymerization mechanism appears to be similar, irrespective of using KPS or AIBN. It is discussed in terms of “effective radicals” produced for the polymerization. While the different dependencies of some latex parameters on concentrations of the initiators are attributed to the different efficiencies of the initiators in producing “effective radicals”.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Monodisperse or/and nearly monodisperse latex particles from 0.1 to 1 μm in diameter were readily obtained. The diameter of latex particles follows the relationship Dvad ∝ θ0.33 [PEO-R-MA-40]-0.60 [styrene]01.02 [AIBN]o-0.09, where θ is the fractional conversion of styrene. Except for the styrene concentration dependency, this relationship is in excellent agreement with the model developed by Paine11 and modified by Kawaguchi et al.13 When the surface composition of the grafted PEO macromonomer on the latex particles exceeded 16% as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the particles were nearly monodisperse. In terms of polymerization, this occurred around 18% conversion of styrene. Beyond this critical state of polymerization, the latex particles grew bigger with more PEO macromonomer-styrene copolymers situated on the particle surface. The effect of various factors on the particle size distribution is also discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The reaction of Cd2+ ions with S2− ions generated from the decomposition of thioacetamide proceeded in water microdroplets. The mean diameter of the CdS nanoclusters can be varied from 20 to 80 nm by increasing the reaction temperature from 30 to 120 °C. XRD results indicate that the resulting CdS nanoclusters have a reduced and distorted hexagonal lattice compared to bulk materials. Two intense luminescence bands, i.e., green and red, were observed to coexist in the CdS nanoclusters. Their peak positions and relative intensities were found to be sensitive to the size and structure of nanoclusters. These emissions are attributed to surface defects (green emission) and the Cd–Cl composite vacancies (red emission). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The two carboxylating enzymes, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), responded differently to CO2 enrichment. There was a significant daytime down-regulation in Rubisco activity in the leaves of CO2-enriched plants. However, PEPCase activity in CO2-enriched plants was much higher in the dark period, although it was slightly lower during the daytime than that at ambient CO2. Leaf sucrose–phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) activities in CO2-enriched plants increased markedly, along with a night-time increase in total titratable acidity and malate accumulation. There was a remarkable increase in the levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellins A1 and A3 (GA1+3), isopentenyladenosine (iPA) and zeatin riboside (ZR) in the expanding leaves of plants grown at elevated CO2. It is suggested that (1) the down-regulation of Rubisco and up-regulation of SPS and SS are two important acclimation processes that are beneficial because it enhanced both photosynthetic capacity at high CO2 and reduced resource investment in excessive Rubisco capacity; (2) the increased levels of plant hormones in CO2-enriched M.
