Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1748-7692Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Aerial surveys (n= 88) were used to document locations and count sightings of manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in the inshore waters of Tampa Bay, Florida, between November 1987 and May 1994. We made 5,358 sightings of manatees in 1,958 groups. Calves represented 8% of the manatees sighted. Counts were significantly higher in winter (x̄= 79, n= 29 flights) than in non-winter (x̄= 46, n= 47) months. Counts of manatees in winter increased significantly during the study, but warm-season counts did not. Regression models demonstrated a relationship between counts and environmental factors. Year-round counts were related to air temperatures and seasons, with highest counts in winter. However, in the winter season, counts were significantly correlated only with wind speed, not air temperature. Yearround counts were predicted to be curvilinear with highest counts at 15°C average air temperature. Areas used differed with season: in cold weather, 76% of all sightings occurred in zones with warm-water sources. High-use areas were identified for summer months. Spatial filter analysis was used to compare manatee density in high-use areas between two two-year time periods. The data indicate that (1) manatee use of Tampa Bay was high and increasing in winter, (2) there are particular zones of the bay where conservation of manatees and habitat should be a priority, and (3) sufficient information has been collected for management agencies to develop and implement manatee protection plans.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

PCC 6803 genome and show very strong homologies to those found in higher plants. The gene knock-outs of five putative Na+/H+ antiporters (slr1727, sll0273, sll0689, slr1595 and slr0415) and seven cation ATPases (sll1614, sll1920, slr0671–72, slr0822, slr1507–08–09, slr1728– 29 and slr1950) in the model cyanobacterium (http://www.kazusa.or.jp/cyano/cyano.html) were performed in this study relying on homologous recombination with mutagenenic fragments constructed using a fusion polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach. The impacts of these gene knock-outs were evaluated in terms of Na+ and pH, and light-induced acidification and alkalization that are asso-ciated with inorganic carbon uptake. Two of the five putative antiporter mutants exhibit a characteristic interplay between the pH and Na+ dependence of growth, but only one of the antiporters appears to be necessary for high NaCl tolerance. On the other hand, the mutation of one of the two copper-trafficking ATPases produces a cell line that shows acute NaCl sensitivity. Additionally, disruptions of a putative Ca2+-ATPase and a gene cluster encoding a putative Na+-ATPase subunit also cause high NaCl sensitivity. Three transducer locations (“windows”) provide access to consistent imaging planes: the right parasternal location, the left caudal (apical) parasternal location, and the left cranial parasternal location. Recommendations for image display orientations are very similar to those for comparable human cardiac images, with the heart base or cranial aspect of the heart displayed to the examiner's right on the video display. From the right parasternal location, standard views include a long-axis four-chamber view and a long-axis left ventricular outflow view, and short-axis views at the levels of the left ventricular apex, papillary muscles, chordae tendineae, mitral valve, aortic valve, and pulmonary arteries. From the left caudal (apical) location, standard views include long-axis two-chamber and four-chamber views. From the left cranial parasternal location, standard views include a long-axis view of the left ventricular outflow tract and ascending aorta (with variations to image the right atrium and tricuspid valve, and the pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery), and a short-axis view of the aortic root encircled by the right heart. These images are presented by means of idealized line drawings. These 2 methods of measuring team empowerment were then compared on their ability to predict manager ratings of team effectiveness on 4 dimensions. Findings demonstrated that the consensus method of measuring team empowerment explained significantly greater variance in team effectiveness than did the aggregation method alone. We discuss implications for team research and practice based on these findings and include a discussion on when using consensus after aggregation may be most appropriate.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
