ISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Human myometrium taken between 15 and 42 weeks of pregnancy released a material in vitro which possessed anti-aggregatory activity. This material parallelled authentic prostacyclin in this action; it possessed a similar stability at alkaline pH and generation of activity was inhibited by indomethacin. Production of the prostacyclin-like material by the myometrium was similar at weeks 15 and 38 of pregnancy but a 4-fold increase in synthesis had occurred by 40 weeks. It is suggested this increase may be important for parturition.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2214Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicinePsychologyNotes: Background This study examines the application of the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) to specialist early years provision for children with developmental speech and language impairment. The scale, which has been used in the national Effective Provision of Pre-school Education (EPPE) study in the UK comprises seven subscales describing the quality of provision along a continuum centred on the following areas: ‘space and furnishings’, ‘personal care routines’, ‘language reasoning’, ‘activities’, ‘interaction’, ‘program structure’, and ‘parents and staff’.Methods The ECERS was applied to two nurseries funded by the UK charity I CAN by two researchers with inter-rater-reliability coefficients ranging from 0.91 to 0.96.Results There were notable differences between the specialist early years provision and ‘average’ nursery provision in the UK. On 7/8 measures the early years centre scores are markedly higher than average pre-school provisions. The standard of education and care for the pre-school provisions included in the EPPE project ranged from below minimal (for the diversity subscale, ECERS-E) to approaching good (for the space and furnishings subscale). In contrast, the early years centres were rated as between minimal to good on areas such as space and furnishings and good to excellent on all other areas. Conclusions Clearly specialist services such as those described offer something different from the average. Given results which suggest the positive effects on the children's language abilities of such services it is quite possible that the distinctive characteristics of the nursery environment are responsible for the positive impact. There is a good case for extending the application of the ECERS as a way of helping those providing specialist services start to detect the active ingredients of the provision.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2214Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicinePsychologyNotes: In the UK the suicide rate for male adolescents has nearly doubled since 1975. With a similar increase reported from other countries it is not surprising that preventing suicide in young people has become a priority for many health professionals and policy makers. Unfortunately despite advances in our understanding of suicide in young people there are still deficiencies and inconsistencies in our knowledge. There are also problems in transforming our knowledge of suicide and suicidal behaviour in young people and our understanding of theoretically possible approaches to prevention into effective suicide prevention strategies. To increase the chance of preventing suicide in young people we need to be aware of the problems of putting theory into practice and evaluate all interventions that are undertaken to determine their appropriateness and effectiveness.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Highly oriented InAs films have been grown on natural diamond by MBE. InAs growths were carried out on diamond and on lattice-matched III–V substrates at 250, 300, and 470 °C. The highest quality films (smoothest surface and highest degree of crystallinity) were obtained at 300 °C. X-ray diffraction data indicate that the films have a strong [111] surface normal orientation. RHEED data indicate that the InAs forms a polyvariant thin film with alignment parallel to the interface of one of the 〈110〉InAs directions with one of the 〈110〉diamond directions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Metallic β-WP2 films have been formed on InP by reacting amorphous peroxopolytungstic acid (APA) films on InP in a PH3/H2 ambient at 600 °C. The resulting metallic film exhibits a low sheet resistance (310 μΩ cm) and preliminary measurements suggest the contact on n-InP is ohmic. By using the unreacted peroxopolytungstic acid films as a negative inorganic photoresist, patterned β-WP2 metallic films on InP have been made without the use of a separate metal film etching step. The reacted metallic films show a smooth, abrupt metal/semiconductor interface. The high temperature stability of β-WP2 on InP suggests that this material may be useful as a refractory contact to InP.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: An intracavity lens has been integrated into a high-power tapered ridge-waveguide semiconductor laser diode. The lens is designed to compensate for the phase curvature of the incident mode on the output facet. This has led to improved linearity in the light–current characteristics of the device, showing an increase of up to 47% in power slope efficiency and a reduction of up to 17% in the full width at e−2 intensity of the far field pattern. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
