The alloying behavior of copper atoms into gold clusters at temperatures lower than 300 K was examined using a 200 kV transmission electron microscope equipped with a double source evaporator in the specimen chamber. Isolated gold clusters of about 4 nm in mean diameter were prepared on a supporting film and were cooled down to 245, 215, 165, or 125 K. Copper atoms were then deposited onto the same film. Upon the deposition of copper, the gold clusters quickly changed into completely or partially alloyed clusters, depending upon the substrate temperature. The copper diffusivity estimated from such spontaneous alloying was many orders of magnitude faster than that in bulk gold. A possible mechanism behind the spontaneous alloying is discussed.

The influence of the crystallographic phase transformation on the work function was studied on a Co(0001) surface by a precise measurement of the contact potential difference. The characteristic hysteresis of the work function due to the hcp(arrow-right-and-left)fcc allotropic transformation was found. The work function changes abruptly by about 2 meV with the phase transformation while decreasing monotonically with temperature except in the transformation range. The contributions of the surface dipole barrier and the chemical potential of electrons to the work function are discussed from the point of view of cellular approximation.

The thermal structure of the Sambagawa belt, which is reflected by minerals produced during the highest temperature of metamorphism, generally is characterized by the occurrence of the highest grade schists in the middle of the structural pile. The origin of this structure has been analysed in the upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku as an example for the structure of the whole belt. The upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku consists of three nappes, the Saruta nappe II, the Saruta nappe I and the Fuyunose nappe in descending order of structural level. The Saruta nappe II shows a downward increase of metamorphic grade from the garnet zone, through the albite-biotite zone, to the oligoclase-biotite zone. The Saruta nappe I consists mainly of rocks in the albite-biotite zone and partly in the oligoclase-biotite zone, but the direction of the increase of metamorphic grade is not clear. The Fuyunose nappe shows an upward increase in metamorphic grade which changes from the glaucophane zone to the barroisite zone. It is concluded that the Saruta nappe II and Saruta nappe I were overturned and then mechanically coupled with the Fuyunose nappe. The Sambagawa metamorphic field, which is of the highest temperature phase of metamorphism, appears to have had an inverted thermal gradient and a thermal structure comparable with that expected in the deeper parts of a subduction complex.

Abstract: The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) exhibits at least four different conformational states varying in affinity for agonists such as acetylcholine (ACh). Photoaffinity labeling has been previously used to elucidate the topography of the AChR. However, to date, the photosensitive probes used to explore the cholinergic binding site photolabeled only closed or desensitized states of the receptor. To identify the structural modifications occurring at the ACh binding site on allosteric transition associated with receptor activation, we have investigated novel photoactivatable 4-diazocyclohexa-2,5-dienone derivatives as putative cholinergic agonists. Such compounds are fairly stable in the dark and generate highly reactive carbenic species on irradiation. In binding experiments using AChRs from Torpedo marmorata, these ligands had affinities for the ACh binding site in the micromolar range and did not interact with the noncompetitive blocker site (greater than millimolar affinity). Irreversible photoinactivation of ACh binding sites was obtained with the ligand 1b (up to 42% at 500 µM) in a protectable manner. In patch-clamp studies, 1b was shown to be a functional agonist of peripheral AChR in TE 671 cells, with the interesting property of exhibiting no or very little desensitization even at high concentrations.

We observed laser emission in whispering gallery modes using a microring composed of a semiconducting polymer poly[2,5-bis-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene coated on an etched fiber under transient and quasisteady-state pumping conditions. The threshold for laser oscillation was 1 mJ/cm2 (0.1 MW/cm2) and 30 μJ/cm2 (300 MW/cm2) for nanosecond and femtosecond excitation, respectively. The laser output showed superlinear dependence on the excitation energy above the threshold. The demonstration of lasing under quasisteady-state pumping shows the possibility to develop electrically pumped polymer lasers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Third-order harmonic generation has been measured on highly oriented polydiacetylene (PDA) films prepared by the vacuum deposition method. Experimental values of the third-order electric susceptibility χ(3) measured for pumping laser polarized parallel to the polymer chain show a sharp three-photon resonance to the 1Bu exciton in PDA. Potential usefulness of these highly oriented PDA evaporated films in nonlinear optical applications is suggested.

Abstract— The fourth ventricle of the cat was perfused and the release of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into the perfusate was measured. GABA was released at a rate of 6·69 × 10−10 moles/min and increased about three times during cerebellar cortical stimulation at 200/sec. It is suggested that GABA is released from axon terminals of Purkinje cells in cerebellar subcortical nuclei.
