Both the period of the initial oscillations in the metal film and the amplitude of the sound wave in the substrate are measured quantitatively. The platinum films are roughened by irradiation with energetic ions. The amplitude of the sound wave is doubled at those irradiation levels where the platinum coverage has been reduced by about one-half. A theory for the amplitude of the launched acoustic wave predicts that the acoustic amplitude is proportional to the mean square film thickness. Thus changes in the morphology of a partially perforated metal film can be observed using a simple, nondestructive optical technique. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1525-1314Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract CO2-bearing fluid inclusions in strongly lineated but weakly foliated late Precambrian gneisses within the Hope Valley Shear zone of Connecticut and Rhode Island are of mixed composition (Xco2± 0.1; 7 wt% NaCl equivalent) and variable density (0.59–0.86 g/ml) and occur mainly as isolated inclusions. Also present are dilute (3 wt% NaCl equivalent) aqueous inclusions which occur on healed fractures related to greenschist facies retrograde metamorphism. Isochores for dense isolated CO2-bearing inclusions indicate pressures of 7.5–9 kbar at 500–600° C, the estimated temperature conditions of peak metamorphism. Published 40Ar/39Ar hornblende plateau age spectra indicate cooling through about 500° C at 265 ± 5 Ma. Isochores for low-density CO2-bearing inclusions and aqueous inclusions intersect at the conditions of retrograde metamorphism (325–400° C) and indicate pressures of 3–4 kbar. Published 40Ar/39Ar biotite plateau ages indicate cooling through about 300° C at 250 ± 5 Ma. These data define a P–T uplift curve for the region which is convex towards the temperature axis and indicate uplift rates between 0.4 and 3.3 mm/year in Permian time. Exhumation of basement gneisses was coeval with normal (west-down) motion along the regional basement–cover contact (Honey Hill–Lake Char–Willimantic fault system), and is interpreted as due to post-orogenic extensional collapse of the Alleghanian orogeny.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: The contents of the stomachs of 38 rainbow trout stocked in Llyn Alaw, Anglesey, in August 1969 and caught between October 1969 and February 1970 were analysed. The fish were actively feeding on the bottom fauna throughout the winter and 21 of the stomachs were full or distended. The mean volume of the contents of the stomachs was 2–8 times greater than that of the contents of stomachs of similarly sized brown trout caught at the same time.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2427Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: 1. The production of three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, estimated in the margin of a large channelized lowland river, averaged 42.3 g m−2 yr−1 and the P/B ratio was 3.7. The production value greatly exceeds those previously recorded for G. aculeatus and results from the very high population densities.2. Life-bistory tactics of the sticklebacks included both r- and K-selected traits.3. The fish were carnivorous in the summer months but predominantly detritivorous in the winter.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2109Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: Abstract. A modified flushing technique was used to sample the anterior gut contents of the stomachless cyprinids, the tench, Tinea tinea (L.), and grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella Val., in the laboratory and the field. The method was developed to provide quantitative estimates by measuring optimum penelration of a catheter into the gut of tench from their fork length. Possible implications for the sampling of gut contents of other cyprinids are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The use of a large-meshed seine net (aperture 2–5 cm) in enclosed compounds was an effective method for the capture of large grass carp, Ctenopha-ryngodon idella (Val.), and tench, Tinea tinea L., with mean fork lengths of 42–9 cm and 38–3 cm and mean weights of 1–53 kg and 1–10 kg respectively. Calculated population estimates using a constant-effort removal technique showed a high degree of accuracy for grass carp, when the absolute index of population size was checked after completion of netting with an application of a commercially available rotenone formulation. It is suggested that this was so because of the large proportion (〉90%) of the total population netted. Large tench may be unsusceptible to rotenone at the low concentration of 0–5 ppm used, so no check on the accuracy of the population estimation was possible.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2109Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: A catch-effort method of estimating fish density and biomass using three small seine nets placed simultaneoulsy to enclose a known area of water is described. The efficiency of capture in the first catch was high for both density and biomass with an overall average of 70 and 69% respectively, and 95% confidence limits of approximately 20% for both.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2109Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: Following the implementation of an experimental habitat improvement programme in the River Perry, a small lowland river in Shropshire, using low dams, current deflectors and artificial cover structures, marked changes in fish distribution and abundance were recorded in some study sections which appeared to be related to the effects of the improvement structures in recreating natural river features such as the pool-riffle pattern. Over the site as a whole, the population densities of dace and chub increased from means of 325 fish ha−1 and 229 fish ha−1 in the year before habitat improvement to means of 568 fish ha−1 and 313 fish ha−1 in the year following habitat improvement, increases of 75 and 37% respectively. Similarly, standing crops of dace and chub increased from pre-improvement means of 19.7 kg ha−1 and 66.6 kg ha−5 to post-improvement means of 25.8 kg ha−1 and 83.0 kg ha−1, increases of 31 and 25% respectively. Distribution mapping studies revealed considerable fish relocation following habitat improvement, with large concentrations of fish being recorded in the vicinity of the improvement structures. It is concluded that the improvement programme was successful in partially mitigating the adverse effects on the fishery of previous land drainage river channel works.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1747-6593Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringNotes: The Tawe barrage was an early amenity barrage, and studies after its construction showed a deterioration in water quality within the impounded area. The main concern was the effect of low dissolved-oxygen concentrations upon the migrating salmonids during their passage upstream. An aeration/mixing system was chosen in a combination of diffusers and a propeller, which has proved to be capable of maintaining satisfactory water quality. However, additional diffusers need to be installed to (a) achieve a satisfactory concentration of dissolved oxygen at all points in the river and (b) complete the full scheme.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-2568Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Three cases of gastritis glandularis et cystica profunda are presented, two associated with severe chronic gastritis and the other with invasive gastric carcinoma and chronic gastritis. This poorly known entity consists of benign downgrowths of deep gastric glands through the muscularis mucosae into, the submucosa. The pattern is primarily adenomatous with secondary cyst formation, which varies in extent and severity. The lesion is related to the chronic gastritis but why it should occur so rarely in such a common condition as chronic gastritis remains obscure. More documented cases are needed before a meaningful analysis can be attempted.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
