A 73-year-old man with angiosarcoma of the scalp died about 1 year after disease onset, despite systemic and topical administration of recombinant interleukin-2. Histopathology showed typical changes of endothelial cells with very sparse lymphocytic infiltration into the tumour. An autopsy revealed that the primary site penetrated cranial bone and invaded vertically into the subarachnoid space. Multiple metastases to lung, chest wall, vertebrae and ribs were also found. On immunofluorescence staining, the expression of vascular endothelial cadherin, which is present in normal endothelium, was absent from both primary and metastatic sites. This may have promoted local invasion and metastasis.

Instrumental measurement of color places hue in a 360° continuum, but sensory description of color usually refers to distinct hues — red, green, yellow etc. Color evaluation of “Golden Delicious” apples by both an instrumental method and an experienced sensory panel was conducted to determine if sensory panelists perceive changes of golden apple color in green and yellow hues separately or on a hue continuum from green to yellow. Apple color changed from green to yellow during storage. Two different sensory scoring ballots were used to determine if sensory panelists view color in discrete green and yellow hues or on a green-to-yellow continuum. Data collected from this study demonstrated that sensory panelists can detect the color changes of decreasing greenness, increasing yellowness, and color change from green to yellow in an equal fashion. Hue angle represented the best predictor of sensory color perception.

Two cases of Werner's syndrome are reported. Fibroblasts derived from both patients revealedreduced population doubling numbers. Chromosomal analyses for fibroblasts from both patients and lymphocytes from one patient revealed that chromosomal aberrations occur frequently and randomly. Although some of the chromosomal aberrations involved sites where tumour suppressor genes have been mapped, neither of our patients demonstrated malignancy. Chromosomal aberration at one critical site may not be sufficient to induce cancer or additional factors may be necessary.

We observed massive bleeding from a gastric erosion following transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TAE) in a patient with mild haemophilia A. A 78-year-old haemophiliac (factor VIII level over 60%) received TAE with farmorubicin and spongel. Haematemesis and melena with loss of consciousness occurred 9 days after TAE, and endoscopy revealed superficial erosions with oozing. Toxic effects of the anticancer drug in conjunction with the bleeding disorder may have caused the massive bleeding. We should always consider the possibility of unexpected complications in patients with bleeding disorders; gastrointestinal bleeding can develop during treatment for liver tumours.

Abstract – The relationships between size and age at smolting and juvenile growth rates were examined for 13 populations of white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis). Mean smolt length (ranging 142–210 mm in fork length) and smolt age (2.4–3.7 years) varied significantly among populations and there was a significant negative relationship between smolt length and age. Mean smolt length was positively correlated with mean specific growth rate from age 0 to 1 year, whereas mean smolt age was negatively correlated with specific growth rate. The present study shows that the freshwater environment conditions operating on juvenile growth are important for moulding the phenotypic characteristics of size and age at smolting.

The migratory history of the white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis was examined using otolith microchemical analysis. The fish migrated between freshwater and marine environments multiple times during their life history. Some white-spotted charr used an estuarine habitat prior to smolting and repeated seaward migration within a year.

The back-calculated lengths of white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis from scales obtained using two alternative measurement axes (major axis v. minor axis) were compared. The minor axis provided a more accurate estimate of past length than the major axis.

    Notes:
Stomach fullness of white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis did not differ significantly between above-dam (allopatric with masu salmon) and below-dam (sympatric with masu salmon) areas, but stomach contents did. Juveniles (1+) below the dam consumed relatively more aquatic insects (benthic prey), and those above the dam consumed relatively more terrestrial insects (drifting prey), but there was no difference in the diet of 〉2+ fish between areas. The mouths of juveniles above the dam were more terminal than those of fish below the dam. The adaptive significance of these differences is discussed in relation to differences in fish assemblages. 1999 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

The relationships between fecundity, egg size and female size of sea-run form were compared with resident form, using white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis. Both fecundity and egg size increase with female size. However, the relationship between egg size and female size differed significantly between the resident and sea-run forms. Egg sizes of sea-run and resident were similar even though sea-run fish were much larger. ? 1998 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

    Notes:
Anadromous white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis in a natural river in northern Japan migrated to the sea mainly at age 3+ years. Sea-run charr grew faster than parr, particularly as first time migrants. Sea-run charr repeated seaward migration up to three times; the observed maximum age was 5+ years old. The likelihood ratio test identified significant differences in asymptotic size and individual growth variability between parr and sea-run charr. Sea-run charr had an asymptotic size (L∞) twice as large as parr, while the growth parameter (K) was similar between sea-run and parr. Growth variability was higher for parr than for sea-run charr.

Anadromy in the Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma at the southern limits of its distribution were examined by an intensive field survey and measurements of otolith Sr and Ca concentrations. Body sizes of anadromous individuals were small, only slightly larger than those of mature parr, and the degree of anadromy was extremely low.

    Notes:
Individual growth and maturation histories, age, and size at maturity of resident white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis were examined in a tag-recapture study in a natural river over 3 years. Slow-growing fish reached sexual maturity not only at an older age, but also at a smaller size than fast-growing fish, although females had a larger threshold size at maturity than males at each age. It is suggested that these patterns result from adaptive phenotypic plasticity that depends on individual growth conditions.

: Aroma properties in boiled squid, prawn, and scallop were compared on the basis of data obtained from quantitative descriptive sensory analysis and GC-MS analysis. Aroma of boiled squid, prawn, and scallop were described using 10,10, and 9 attributes, respectively. Among them, 5 and 4 were common in 3 and 2 species, respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) applied for 5 commonly found attributes, including “sweet,”“boiled corn,”“sea breeze,”“sour,” and “irritant,” indicated that pH was the most influential for generating them. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models calculated using heavily loading gas chromatographic (GC) peaks were highly predictable. Several influential volatile components showed similar contribution to attributes regardless of species of seafood.

    Notes:
: The aroma property of boiled squid was quantitatively described using 10 sensory attributes. From screening experiments based on a Plackett-Burman design, pH and parts of squid were selected as significant factors for generating the “cooked squid” aroma. Squid samples prepared according to a 3-level full-factorial design for pH and parts showed that “sweet,”“roasted shrimp,”“cooked fish,” and “cooked squid” scores were higher in both muscle and muscle with skin at pH 6.5. Response surface models calculated for each of the attributes showed how pH and parts influenced their strength. Partial least squares regression analysis applied to the sensory and GC-MS data revealed that every attribute could be predictable (R2≥ 0.956) using a small number of informative peaks.

Summary Ocular complications of atopic dermatitis include cataract, blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis, keratoconus, iritis and retinal detachment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of retinal detachment in atopic dermatitis patients. We examined four patients with atopic dermatitis and retinal detachment, and performed an extensive review of the literature. There have been about 130 reported cases of retinal detachment in patients with atopic dermatitis from Japan, in comparison with only a few reports from Europe and the U.S.A. An extensive review of the literature revealed that retinal detachment occurs at a young age in atopic dermatitis patients, and that often both eyes are involved. As retinal detachment is not a rare complication of atopic dermatitis, we propose that this type of retinal detachment is designated ‘atopic retinal detachment’. Dermatologists should be aware of this potential complication of atopic dermatitis.
