BCG-DNA was purified from BCG by ion-exchange chromatography. Three DNA vaccines (pVSG, pVgD and pVE2) against the respective infection were constructed, and BCG-DNA was coimmunized to mice by muscle injection. The results showed that titres of specific immunoglobulin (Ig)G to the vaccines mounted remarkably in the sera of the adjuvant covaccinated mice (P 〈 0.01). Antibody isotype IgG2a and IgG1 also increased, respectively, in mice coimmunized with BCG-DNA compared with those of the control groups (P 〈 0.01). Cellular immune cytokine interferon-γ and cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected in coimmunized BCG-DNA groups (P 〈 0.05). Whereas interleukin-4, humoral immune cytokine, was not significant (P 〉 0.05). These results suggest that codelivery of BCG-DNA with DNA vaccines against FMD, AjD and CSF can enhance the induction of antigen-specific, especially, cell-mediated immunity.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A physical model of a manhole/pipeline system was constructed for head-loss measurements. Head-loss coefficients were determined for a variety of outlet-flow Reynolds numbers, surcharge levels, pipe sizes, flow configurations, and inlet-flow rates. Empirical formulas were also developed to estimate head-loss coefficients. The results indicate that head loss is insensitive to the amount of surcharge, but depends heavily on the flow configuration, relative flow rate, and the change of pipe diameter within the pipelines.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2133Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Rosai–Dorfman disease (RDD; sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy) and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) are two different yet pathogenetically related histiocytic disorders. While systemic and localized forms have been identified in both diseases, each has its own characteristic histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural profile. Rarely, either RDD or LCH can also occur in the context of certain malignant neoplasms. However, the coexistence of RDD and LCH has never been described. We report a case of cutaneous RDD in which a focus of LCH was found. Clinical and laboratory examinations revealed no evidence of extracutaneous involvement of RDD or LCH. We believe that this is the first report of such a coexistence, and the possible pathogenesis is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-5060Keywords: Anthurium ; Radopholus similis ; resistance ; toleranceSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: Abstract Five Anthurium species closely related to two of the cultivated ornamentals, A. andraeanum Lind. ex André and A. scherzerianum Schott, and one species of breeding interest, were screened in vitro for tolerance and resistance to the nematode Radopholus similis Cobb, 1893. Adjustment of the tolerance measurement to the initial and uninoculated treatment measurement improved the screening method. Use of a nematode strain with a relatively slow reproduction rate enabled concurrent screening for tolerance and resistance to R. similis in Anthurium. Based on a lower relative symptom index, A. pittieri Engl., A. ravenii Croat and Baker, A. antioquiense Engl. and A. aripoense N. E. Br. reduce nematode damage as compared to the reference standard, ‘Midori’. However, A. antioquiense and A. aripoense had higher root damage than ‘Midori’. Lower nematode damage in A. pittieri and A. ravenii is positively correlated with greater plant vigor or to fewer target roots for nematode infection. A. ravenii was among the most resistant species as measured by nematode reproduction. This is followed by A. aripoense and A. pittieri. Thus, strong plant vigor, fewer target roots for nematode infection, and/or lower nematode reproduction (higher nematode resistance) resulted in lower nematode damage in A. pittieri and A. ravenii. Combining the nematode damage and nematode reproduction results, A. pittieri and A. ravenii were identified as more tolerant than the reference standard ‘Midori’.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0001-1541Keywords: Chemistry ; Chemical EngineeringSource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: The stability of vertical laminar falling films subjected to interphase mass transfer and surface-tension gradients in the direction of flow is investigated by linear perturbation analysis. The perturbations considered are vertical waves or rivulets as described by Ludviksson and Lightfoot for nonisothermal films. Perturbations of this type are thought to lead to the maldistribution of flow observed in distillation and gas absorption by Zuiderweg and Harmens and by Francis and Berg.Three unstable regions are predicted, one corresponding closely to that found by Ludviksson and Lightfoot, and two new ones, previously unreported, resulting from interphase mass transfer across the free surface. These predictions confirm the conclusions of Zuiderweg and Harmens for situations in which surface tension increases upward, and they provide a means of estimating the range of unstable gradients. Experimental evidence for instability predicted when the surface tension increases downward is inconclusive. Further investigation of this region, which is of considerable importance, is recommended.Additional Material: 5 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
