ISSN: 1365-2621Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Process Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: An oxygen absorption test carried out at 100°C has been used to investigate rancidity problems occurring during processing and storage of foods. A relationship between induction period and flavour deterioration was established for fried foods. In the case of potato crisps the stability test was used to develop plant operating conditions which ensured sufficient shelf-life. Other applications of the test include the effect of artificial light and of emulsifier addition on fats and the comparison of antioxidants.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2621Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Process Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: A limited amount of fat destabilization occurs when ice cream mix is aerated and frozen, and this emulsion breakdown imparts some desirable properties to ice cream. A method of measuring the amount of de-emulsified fat is described, and the results of an investigation of the process by means of electron microscopy are given. The effects of fat composition and processing variables on fat destabilization are summarized, and an overall picture is presented of the part played by fat in the structure of ice cream.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2516Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. Clinical studies have shown significant improvement in outcomes with the use of prophylactic treatment, as well as apparent gains in health-related quality of life. Given the high cost and still limited availability of factor concentrates, physicians, insurers and governments require cost-effectiveness data to evaluate competing treatments (eg prophylactic vs. on-demand treatment) and to set priorities within the context of each country's financial resources. To date, the few published studies of the cost-effectiveness of haemophilia prophylaxis have generally focused on the reduction in frequency of bleedings as an intermediate outcome, and not on long-term health outcomes, such as the development of arthropathy and its social and economic costs. Since all prophylactic measures are investments for the future, long-term economic consequences need to be carefully studied and evaluated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2516Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: We conducted a multicentre, cross- sectional study of 1042 haemophilia subjects across Europe to compare various health outcomes associated with on-demand vs. prophylactic factor-substitution therapy. Demographic, medical history, and healthcare resource utilization data were analysed along with the number of bleeding events over the past 6 months. Treatment-cost data were also examined to provide preliminary information for future economic studies. A logistic regression analysis, controlling for other statistically significant covariates, showed that patients treated on demand were 3.4 times more likely to have had a joint bleed over the previous 6 months than those treated with prophylaxis. Multiple regression analyses further confirmed these findings, because on-demand subjects had, on average, 5.15 more joint bleeds over the reporting period than patients treated with prophylaxis. Notably, these findings were even more dramatic for younger haemophilia patients when our study sample was stratified by age. Due to the high cost of factor replacement, healthcare costs were significantly higher for subjects treated prophylactically. While hospital costs for prophylaxis subjects were, on average, lower, statistically significant cost savings for prophylactic subjects were not noted. These results suggest that clinicians and health policy decision-makers should consider the advantages of prophylactic therapy for haemophilia patients in formulating treatment protocols and allocating health resources.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2516Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. Scarce resources in healthcare are a fact of life everywhere. Providing optimal healthcare for haemophilia means delivering the best possible clinical outcomes at an acceptable total cost, however that is defined by individual societies. Health economics helps us to do this. So far, economic evaluation has enhanced our understanding of some of the economic implications of haemophilia and has provided some guidance on the way forward to optimize efficient allocation of resources for this condition. Further advances and consensus on evaluation methods and standards for the economics of haemophilia are required, however. This need will continue in the face of new, more sophisticated and therefore more costly haemophilia therapies.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2621Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Process Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Summary. The DTA (differential thermal analysis) cooling curves of fats are simpler than the melting curves because complicated effects due to polymorphism are not obtained. The cooling curves of some synthetic glycerides are presented. Fractions of defined glyceride composition are obtained from palm oil, cotton-seed oil and soya bean oil and examined by DTA. A number of other oils and hydrogenated oils are examined and the DTA curves interpreted in terms of their glyceride composition.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1600-0765Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The rate of collagen synthesis in rat palatal mucosa decreased markedly from 2.5 to 13 weeks of age when determined by an in vitro labelling technique. Beyond 13 weeks of age, the rate of collagen synthesis remained unchanged and at a relatively low level. These results were not a consequence of isotope-dilution arising from an increase of tissue collagen mass. For other connective tissues an age-dependent decrease in net collagen synthesis has been observed and, therefore, is not unique for palatal mucosa. The principal finding of this study was that the rate of conversion of salt-soluble to salt-insoluble collagen in palatal mucosa increased with age and remained at a high level in adult rats. In contrast, the rate of conversion of salt-soluble to -insoluble collagen has been reported to decline in adult rat skin. Collectively, the data suggest that collagen in soft oral connective tissues undergoes fibrillogenesis with a rapidity that may be more characteristic of tissues during rapid growth or during healing, rather than tissues during a normal adult stage of metabolism.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
