ISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We propose new identities for dynamic subgrid modeling in large-eddy simulation involving an explicit filter and its inverse. Exact defiltering of a class of numerical realizations of the top-hat filter is developed. The approach is applied to large-eddy simulation of the temporal mixing layer. Smagorinsky's model is adopted as base model and the results are compared to the standard dynamic eddy-viscosity model as well as to filtered DNS (direct numerical simulation) results. The difference between the results of the two models for the present application is found to be quite small. This is explained by performing a sensitivity analysis with respect to the dynamic coefficient, which hints towards a "self-restoring" response underlying the observed robustness of the physical predictions. Using DNS data the validity of the assumption that the model coefficients are independent of filter width is tested and found to favor the inverse modeling procedure. The computational effort of the dynamic inverse model is 15% smaller than of the standard dynamic eddy-viscosity model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The shocks are generated by the turbulent motions in the flow. Consequently, they can have different shapes and orientations, while they persist for a relatively short time. Furthermore, they are created by different types of turbulent vortices. The shocks do not strongly contribute to the turbulent dissipation. Even at the time when the largest shocks occur, the fraction of the turbulent dissipation due to the shocks is less than 10%. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Fluids A 5, 3186 (1993)] (DMM1) is modified with respect to the incorporation of the similarity model in order to remove a mathematical inconsistency. Compared to DMM1, the magnitude of the dynamic model coefficient of the modified model (DMM2) is increased considerably, while it is still significantly smaller than as occurs in the dynamic subgrid-scale eddy-viscosity model of Germano [J. Fluid Mech. 238, 325 (1992)] (DSM). Large eddy simulations (LES) for the weakly compressible mixing layer are conducted using these three models and results are compared with direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. LES based on DMM1 gives a significant improvement over LES using DSM, while even better agreement is achieved with DMM2. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A percentage reduction of the dry substance by decrease of N2-free substances takes place. In relation to g dry substance the body protein content, collagen also, rises. Absolutely, these parts rest unaltered, just so the relation of the parenchymatous protein to collagen. The often support of view that starving provokes a collagen formation of the body, that means an exceed of the framework, can not be confirmed. Though in this paper we can give an explanation for the occurrence of this conclusion. Long interruptions of lactation periods remarkably have no effect on the growth and on the main compartments of the body of new born rats. Only tryptophane is reduced in favour of the serine-fraction in the body of those animals. We discuss this finding as a change of the metabolisme of tryptophane depending of stress. Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Summary Methods to reduce blood loB in hepatic surgery are decribed! 1) the control method of hepatic lobectomy, 2) resection using one or two clamps, 3) resection under hypothermia with simultaneous clamping of the liver hilus, 4) resection of the isolated bloodleB organ under hypothermia, 5) use of an internal cava shunt, 6) use of intraoperative autotransfusion. In 6 of 15 patients treated by liver resection, a further method to reduce blood loB was used: acute preoperative hemodilution. Blood clotting was not impaired postoperatively.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-9071Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary Rats can produce glycine from hydroxyproline and vice versa. After the injection, hydroxyproline is rapidly converted into glycine and then incorporated into collagen. Later the labelled amino acids in collagen are hydroxyproline, proline, serine, threonine, alanine, and glutamic acid. We suppose that all these labelled amino acids come from glycine.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
