Carbon films were deposited by rf bias sputtering of a carbon target in argon. Bias voltage and argon pressure were varied systematically. Hardness, internal stress, density, hydrogen content, and infrared absorption were measured as functions of the preparation parameters. From the IR measurements the bond ratio of sp3 to sp2 was calculated and the total amount of hydrogen in the films was determined by elastic recoil detection. The hydrogen content was found to be much lower than for films prepared by plasma decomposition of hydrocarbons. Because the film thickness was in the range of 500 nm, the hardness was measured with an ultralow-load diamond indenter. For these measurements the indentation depth was about 60 nm. The internal stress was determined by the bending beam method. The coordination number, number density, and the filling factor were calculated from the measured values. The results have been compared to those for films deposited by plasma decomposition of hydrocarbons.

The nucleation of misfit dislocations through the extension of dissociated dislocations in the strained interface is considered theoretically. The predicted critical thickness of misfit dislocation nucleation by a dissociated dislocation is compared with that predicted for a perfect dislocation. It is shown that the model of misfit dislocation nucleation by the movement of a dissociated dislocation is more likely.

The onset of misfit dislocation generation is investigated and the critical thickness is determined by transmission electron microscopy using the epitaxial lift-off technique for InGaAs/GaAs single heterostructures and single quantum wells. The observed geometries of the dislocations in both cases are in good agreement with the predicted models [J. Appl. Phys. 41, 3800 (1970) and J. Cryst. Growth 27, 118 (1974)]. However, each dislocation undergoes the predicted elongation mechanism [J. Appl. Phys. 41, 3800 (1970)] at different strained-layer thicknesses. A comparison of the predicted and the experimental critical thicknesses is given.

Ge(Si)/Si(001) coherent islands grown at 700 °C by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. [001] on-zone bright-field diffraction contrast imaging and image simulation techniques were used to investigate the structure of these coherent islands. Comparison of simulated and experimental images indicates nonuniform composition distribution within the coherent islands when the islands were grown at high temperatures (700 °C), but uniform composition for growth at lower temperatures (600 °C). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Aims:  A method to test the axial and transverse tensile properties of skin was developed in order to improve our understanding of the mechanical behavior of skin, and how it changes with the scarring response. This experimental technique was used to investigate the bidirectional mechanics of skin in the juvenile Yorkshire pig model. Methods:  Skin samples were taken upon sacrifice, and all subcutaneous tissue was carefully removed via dissection. Dumbbell-shaped specimens were obtained from the skin using a custom designed stainless steel punch, to provide consistent geometry, and to avoid stress concentrations that can result from specimen gripping. Samples were taken in the axial (cranial-caudal) and transverse (dorsal-ventral) directions. Specimens were secured in an INSTRON universal test machine with serrated soft tissue grips, elongated to a desired preload, subjected to a 10% elongation and held for a 4-min isometric period. They were then returned to the original length and failed in tension at constant velocity. Results:  This method of sample preparation indicated high repeatability in specimen geometry, showing standard deviations of 2% and 3% in gauge length and width, respectively (N = 12). Furthermore, no slippage was observed at the skin/grip interface, and all failures occurred within the specimen gauge length. Conclusions:  This technique shows great promise for evaluating the viscoelastic and failure properties of skin, scar tissue, and pathologic scarring. Combining this biomechanical method with our parallel studies in molecular biology and biochemistry can likely produce correlations between constituent material organization and the mechanical properties of the tissue, as well as provide valuable information for the design of bioengineered tissue constructs.Acknowledgments:  Alberta Ingenuity Fund, CIHR, and NSERC

Effects of anodic oxide induced intermixing on the structural and optical properties of stacked GaAs quantum wire (QWR) structures grown on a sawtooth-type nonplanar GaAs substrate are investigated. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscope (XTEM) observation, temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging were used. Intermixing was achieved by pulsed anodic oxidation of the GaAs cap layer and subsequent rapid thermal annealing, was verified by XTEM analysis. A significant enhancement of QWR PL is observed accompanied by a notable blueshift of the sidewall quantum well (SQWL) PL due to the intermixing. Furthermore, an extended necking region is observed after the intermixing by spatially resolved CL. The temperature dependence of the PL intensities of both SQWL and QWR show maxima at approximately T∼110 K indicating the role of the extended necking region in feeding carriers to SQWL and QWR. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

This article reports on the properties of hydrogenated carbon films deposited using a cathodic arc decomposition process with a graphite cathode used in a plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition mode. In this application of the cathodic arc, acetylene is broken down into radicals to form hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Some results are also reported using hydrogen gas. The density in terms of plasmon energy or sp3 fraction of the films has been found to decrease with increasing acetylene or hydrogen flow rate, approaching the value for glow discharge deposited polymer-like hydrogenated amorphous carbon. When substrate bias is used, the hydrogen content is reduced and graphite microcrystals appear, together with cauliflower-like growths. In the range between 100 and 500 V, negative substrate bias increases the density of the films. Overall, the hydrogen content decreases with the density of the films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
