The predominant felsic granulites are garnet + quartz + ternary feldspar (now perthite) rocks containing kyanite, plagioclase, biotite, rutile, spinel, corundum, and minor zircon and apatite. The quartz-bearing mafic granulites contain a peak pressure assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + ternary feldspar (now mesoperthite) + quartz + rutile. The sapphirine-bearing metabasites occur as mafic layers in garnet peridotite. Petrographical data suggest a peak assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + kyanite + rutile. Early kyanite is inferred from a symplectite of sapphirine + corundum + plagioclase ± spinel, interpreted to have formed during decompression. Garnet peridotite contains an assemblage of garnet + olivine + orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene. Thermobarometry indicates that all rock types experienced peak P–T conditions of 18.5–27.3 kbar and 870–1050 °C. A medium–high pressure granulite facies overprint (780–820 °C, 9.5–12 kbar) is defined by the formation of secondary clinopyroxene ± orthopyroxene + plagioclase at the expense of garnet and early clinopyroxene in the mafic granulites, as well as by growth of spinel and plagioclase at the expense of garnet and kyanite in the felsic granulite. SHRIMP II zircon U-Pb geochronology yields ages of 493 ± 7 Ma (mean of 11) from the felsic granulite, 497 ± 11 Ma (mean of 11) from sapphirine-bearing metabasite and 501 ± 16 Ma (mean of 10) from garnet peridotite. Rounded zircon morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) sector zoning, and inclusions of peak metamorphic minerals indicate these ages reflect HP/HT metamorphism. Similar ages determined for eclogites from the western segment of the SAT suggest that the same continental subduction/collision event may be responsible for HP metamorphism in both areas.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

By restricting the heat absorbing or evolving on one of the sample's surfaces, the Peltier heat flow is converted into a temperature difference for measurement. The temperature difference is found proportional to the current applied, which is in accordance with the prediction of transverse Peltier effect. Based on a simplified model, the difference of the Seebeck coefficients between the ab plane and the c axis, |Sab−Sc|, is about 35 μV/K. It is in good agreement with that of large single crystal [I. Terasaki, Y. Sato, S. Tajima, S. Miyamoto, and S. Tanaka, Physica C 235-240, 1413 (1994)]. The transverse Peltier effect is verified. This supports the idea that the off-diagonal thermoelectric effect is responsible for the anomalously high laser-induced transient transverse voltage on the oriented YBCO superconducting thin films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Nanocomposite Sm2Co17–Cu particles have been fabricated by low energy comilling of mechanically alloyed Sm2Co17 particles with Cu nanoparticles. The x-ray diffraction analyses show that the diffraction crystallite size (DCS) of Sm2Co17 decreases with increasing comilling time. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy observation demonstrates that the particle size is in the range of the DCS and the Sm2Co17 particles are separated by Cu particles. The coercivity as well as the remanence ratio decreases with increasing milling time due to the grain size reduction and grain separation. The nanocomposite Sm2Co17–Cu exhibits suitable magnetic and microstructure properties for high-density recording. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-4803Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract The internal friction of high-purity aluminium during the process of plastic deformation was measured by a middle torsion pendulum on a modified tensile testing machine. The effects of tensile strain rate, $$\dot \varepsilon $$ , in the range of 0.73×10−6 to 50×10−6s−1, and frequency of internal friction measurement, f, in the range of 0.38 to 2.6 Hz were studied. The results showed a non-linear dependence of internal friction, Q −1, on $$\dot \varepsilon $$ and f −1 or on $$\dot \varepsilon /\omega $$ (ω=2π f). The interrelationship between internal friction during the process of plastic deformation and dislocation motion, and the effect of non-linearity on the dynamic behaviour of dislocations are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

While this type of crystal growing process is not new, our process requires only the existence of spatial temperature gradient in some parts of the common tube furnace. The samples with tellurium were found to be much more stable and better superconductors than the Y-123 specimen. Large layer textures with cross-section ∼50×500μm2 were observed to grow inside the usual bulk sample. The critical currents were measured by the d.c. magnetization method and found to be easily greater than 6000 A cm−2 for the samples with Te.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
