ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The Faraday rotation has been calculated at 1.55-eV photon energy (800 nm wavelength) for various substitutions in CoFe2O4 from the optical constants and the Kerr rotation and ellipticity spectra of polycrystalline bulk samples. The Faraday rotation consists of contributions both from the Co2+→Fe3+ charge transfer transition on octahedral sites as well as from the Co2+ 4A2→4T1 (P) crystal-field transition on tetrahedral sites, both centered around 2-eV photon energy. For the various substitutions the contribution of the crystal field transition to the Faraday rotation at 1.55 eV is determined by the amount of Co2+ on tetrahedral sites as well as the shift in energy of this transition upon substitution. A significant contribution of the 4A2→4T1 (P) transition to the Faraday rotation at 1.55 eV is reached in Rh3+ substituted CoFe2O4.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Magneto-optical spectroscopy and hysteresis loops have been used to study nondestructively the effect of 100-keV Ne+ implantation in epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 thin films. The results show the formation of a damaged layer of 0.13 μm thickness. The stress-induced anisotropy field reaches maximum values of 3.2×104 A/m for an ion dose of 2×1014 cm−2. A decrease in both magnetization and magnetostriction down to 3.6×104 A/m and −1.2×10−6, respectively, was observed for an ion dose of 4×1014 cm−2. The magneto-optical spectra were found to reduce in magnitude but not in shape with increasing implantation dose.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A magneto-optical ellipsometer is described which uses polarization modulation and the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect. The ellipsometer allows a full determination of the optical and magneto-optical constants of magnetic materials, as well as the registration of in-plane hysteresis loops. The latter application is illustrated on a Ni80Fe20 thin-film sample.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
