ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: We study collective diffusion in a semidilute suspension of Brownian particles interacting with a square well potential. Under neglect of hydrodynamic interactions, we derive an explicit expression for the wave number- and frequency-dependent diffusion coefficient. At zero frequency, the diffusion coefficient exhibits a resonance structure which varies strongly with the square well parameters.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: We study the long-time wave-number-dependent collective diffusion coefficient of a semidilute suspension of interacting spherical Brownian particles with direct and hydrodynamic interactions. Explicit results are found for the first two nonvanishing terms in an expansion in powers of the wave number for a suspension of hard spheres with hydrodynamic interactions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We performed a detailed study of the magnetization reversal in polycrystalline exchange-coupled NiO/Co bilayers over 10 decades of field sweep rate dH/dt for different NiO and Co thicknesses. For all sweep rates and thicknesses, the symmetry of the hysteresis loops shows that an identical pinning strength has to be overcome in both directions of the reversal. At low dH/dt the reversal is governed by domain wall displacement while domain nucleation is dominant at higher ones. The dH/dt at which the transition between the two regimes takes place depends on the relative thickness of the NiO and Co layers. It increases (decreases) when the Co (NiO) thickness is increased. Experimentally, it was found that the energy barrier varies linearly with the square root of the area corresponding to the activation (Barkhausen) volume which is consistent with a random walk model of the coupling between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layers. The results can be explained in terms of a thermally activated switching of the NiO magnetization dragged by the Co reversal. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Magnetic properties of amorphous Er1−xFex alloys with x≈0.7 have been studied. Macroscopic characterization has been performed by measuring temperature- and field-dependent magnetization. Applying a magnetic field the compensation temperature first decreases, but increases again at larger fields. This "exotic'' behavior has been interpreted in terms of the sperimagnetic character of both subnetworks. The suggested scheme has been checked by measuring x-ray circular magnetic dichroism at the Er M5-edge. Using this atom-sensitive technique we have been able to detect temperature-induced as well as field-induced flips of the Er-subnetwork with respect to the direction of the applied field. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
