The psychosexual sequelae of diagnosis and treatment of pre-invasive cervical atypia were assessed in three groups of women. The first group included 30 women referred to a colposcopy clinic with an abnormal cervical smear indicating cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), the second comprised 50 women who were traced as sexual partners of men with penile human papillomavirus (HPV) infection; 26 of them had histologically proven cervical atypia and 24 had no such evidence. The third group included 25 women traced as partners of men with non-specific urethritis and who did not have cervical disease. Before and after questionnaires assessed six aspects of sexual behaviour and responses before diagnosis and 6 months after treatment in women with cervical atypia. These were compared with answers given by women investigated and treated, if necessary, as partners of men with sexually transmitted disease (control group). There were statistically significant adverse psychosexual sequelae associated with diagnosis and treatment of pre-invasive cervical epithelial disease.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Neuro-cutaneous interactions may be mediated by the release of neuropeptides such as substance P (SP) which activate immunocompetent cells in the skin by binding to high affinity neurokinin receptors (NKR). Since epidermal keratinocytes produce a variety of cytokines and are intimately associated with cutaneous sensory fibers, we tested the ability of these cells to participate in the cutaneous neuroimmune system by the secretion of potent cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1) in response to released SP. RT-PCR studies demonstrated that cultured PAM 212 murine keratinocytes expressed mRNA for NK-2R but not NK-1R. Correspondingly, the addition of SP to these cells resulted in a rapid increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels that could be specifically blocked by an NK-2R antagonist. NK-2R was also shown in normal mouse epidermis by immunohistochemistry. SP augmented the expression of PAM 212 keratinocyte IL-1α mRNA in a dose and time dependent manner and this induction was inhibited by an NK-2R antagonist. Secretion of bioactive IL-1α by the PAM 212 keratinocytes was likewise stimulated by SP in a dose dependent manner. These data support the hypothesis that SP released from cutaneous sensory nerves contributes to neuroimmune inflammatory responses in the skin by modulating the expression and release of cytokines from epidermal keratinocytes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A habitat suitability index (HSI) model for suspended tray culture of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, was constructed from existing information in the literature on oyster-environment relationships. In the model, biophysical data are used to rate aquaculture potential of coastal areas on a scale from 0.0 to 1·0. where 1·0 represents optimal conditions for growth and survival and 0·0 represents totally unsuitable habitat conditions. The model was tested with environmental, growth (increase in shell height) and secondary production (g· 100 oysters−1 day−1) data collected over a 14-month period for two age-classes of oysters transplanted to 10 locations along the coast of British Columbia. Canada. Regressions of HSI values calculated from entire study environmental data against oyster growth and secondary production were highly significant for both age-classes. Environmental data subsets representing short sampling programmers (1–3 months) resulted in HSI values significantly correlated to oyster growth, provided that some sampling occurred during periods of high food availability. HSI modeling techniques have potential application in site selection and coastal management of aquaculture.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
