Amongst a total of 329 cases of low-grade B-cell lymphoma of Waldeyer's ring, we identified 12 cases that corresponded histomorphologically to low-grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type. These lymphomas are characterized by an extrafollicular growth pattern, often with a marginal zone-like arrangement, and by the centrocyte-like morphology of the tumour cells. They have not been described previously in this location. They predominantly affected the palatine tonsil. Ten cases were primary lymphomas of Waldeyer's ring. In two cases there was a simultaneous high-grade component. Two cases showed regional spread to cervical lymph nodes, but there was no widespread nodal involvement at the time of diagnosis. Immunohistochemically, all cases displayed B-cell markers and light chain restriction. Tropism of tumour cells for the epithelium was a consistent finding. In two cases involvement of Waldeyer's ring was secondary; in one of them the primary tumour was a gastric low-grade B-cell lymphoma of MALT type and in the other a high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the stomach. These findings indicate that low-grade B-cell lymphomas of MALT type occurring in Waldeyer's ring should be included amongst the tumours of the MALT system. We surmise that in Waldeyer's ring such tumours are derived from the marginal zone, as has already been postulated for similar gastric tumours.

Abstract The histoblot immunostaining technique for locating and characterizing amyloidogenic proteins was used to obtain information about the relationship of cerebral ischemia/hypoxia to the accumulation of amyloid β protein (Aβ). We investigated brains of 131 subjects (ages 25–94 years, mean 72 years). Three distribution patterns of Aβ immunoreactivity were identified: (1) colocalization with diffuse and neuritic plaques of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and aging; (2) diffuse punctate deposits in the cerebral cortex in association with small vessel cerebral vascular disease; and (3) cerebral cortical accumulation localized to arterial boundary zones and other regions susceptible to ischemic/hypoxic injury designated "stress-induced deposits" (SID). SID were not identified in tissue sections by immunohistochemical, Congo red or Bielschowsky silver techniques; no histological abnormalities were present in adjacent formalin-fixed tissue sections. SID occurred in subjects with histories of cerebral ischemia, and severe orthostatic hypotension. There was also an association with aging in general and with the incidence of neuritic plaques specifically. These latter findings are consistent with the hypothesis that brain ischemia/hypoxia plays a role in the pathogenesis of AD.

Abstract  Bacterial interaction with oil and sea water, in a porous medium, was studied using a transparent micro model mounted on a cybernetic-controlled positioning board of an inverted microscope. This was interfaced with computer-operated image analysis and surveillance equipment. Consecutive flooding of the model allowed oil to become trapped by capillary forces. Hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria were inoculated. The interaction of biofilm and oil was monitored during a period of 25 days, while mineral salts were supplied intermittently. A unique feature of biofilm behaviour was discovered. The phenomenon is discussed, and calculations are presented. A possible explanation of the phenomenon appears to be local reductions of the surface tension. The phenomenon helps explain why bacteria are able to mobilise oil trapped by capillary forces without reducing the interfacial tension to a level that leads to an increase in the capillary number sufficient to explain incremental oil recovery. The experimental design is believed to be suitable for studying biofilm behaviour on the pore level.

Summary Cryostat sections incubated for myofibrillar ATPase, SDH, LDH, and α-GPDH as well as p-phenylene-diamine stained semithin sections were used to define muscle fibre types in the trunk musculature of the cod (Gadus morhua, L.). Three zones (superficial, intermediate, deep) containing different muscle fibre types are present within both epaxial and hypaxial parts of each myomere subjacent to the lateral line. Atypical relations concerning myofibrillar ATPase activity probably reflects instability of myosin during storage of frozen tissue. The histochemical reaction does not distinguish between myofibrillar and mitochondrial ATPase in cod muscle. Based on ATPase and SDH activities, seven different histochemical profiles of muscle fibres can be identified in trunk musculature of this teleost fish. Attempts to homologize these fibre types with those in cyclostomes or those in higher animals proved futile. The higher number of histochemically defined muscle fibre types in cod might be explained by developmental processes and an admixture of immature fibres throughout life.

Abstract Although there is a consensus that orofacial and limbtruncal subtypes of tardive dyskinesia (TD) exist and may represent distinct pathophysiologic entities, few studies have examined the incidence of and risk factors associated with the development of these TD subtypes. Two hundred and sixty-six middle-aged and elderly outpatients with a median duration of 21 days of total lifetime neuroleptic exposure at study entry were evaluated at 1- to 3-month intervals. Using “mild” dyskinesia in any part of the body for diagnosis of TD, the cumulative incidence of orofacial TD was 38.5 and 65.7% after 1 and 2 years, respectively, whereas that of limbtruncal TD was 18.6 and 32.6% after 1 and 2 years. Preclinical dyskinesia was predictive of both orofacial and limbtruncal TD. History of alcohol abuse or dependence was a significant predictor of orofacial TD only whereas tremor was a significant predictor of limbtruncal TD only. Findings support suggestions that orofacial and limbtruncal TD may represent specific subsyndromes with different risk factors.

Summary We report about the establishing of cell cultures from calf cornea tissue. Between the 30th and 40th passage an epitheloid cell line (KCe-cells) was successfully isolated from the mainly fibroblastic (KC) cell cultures. The KC- and KCe-cell lines were separately maintained. By comparison, the KCe-cells which grew in clones, reached a density two to three times that of the KC-cells in tissue culture vessels. The 80th–90th passage has been attained by both cell lines. Besides their ability to grow quickly and their preservability, it showed that the KC-cell line which provides a valuable cell system for use in the virus laboratory had a high susceptibility to strains belonging to different virus groups. In cell culture tubes and plaque tests the results were as good as those obtained with the usual primary or secondary cell culture systems. The KCe-cells proved to be substantially less sensitive to infection with the viruses tested.

Summary C-type virus particles were demonstrated by electron microscopy in phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocyte cultures from sheep. Virus particles were observed in cultures from 7 animals with confirmed diagnosis of lymphatic leukosis or with persistent lymphocytosis, and not at all in cultures from 38 sheep of the same herd without signs of leukosis. It was concluded that the observation of virus particles in lymphocyte cultures may be associated with leukosis in sheep.

Abstract C-type virus containing preparations from concanavalin stimulated sheep lymphocyte culture fluids were treated with ether, and used for antigen in immunodiffusion tests. 13 out of 14 sera from sheep with spontaneous lymphatic leukosis showed precipitation reaction with the antigen preparation. 3 out of 33 sera from clinically unsuspect sheep in the same multiple case herd also formed precipitin bands. 3 out of 37 sera from offspring of leukotic ewes, 3 out of 9 sera from sheep, inoculated as newborne lambs with leukotic material, and 1 out of 4 sera from inoculated goats precipitated in the same manner. Immunodiffusion tests with a similar antigen preparation from bovine lymphocyte culture fluid led to strong identical results. 162 sera from sheep out of leukosis free herds did not show precipitation reactions. These findings seem to demonstrate the presence of antibodies to common ether resistent ovine and bovine C-type virus specific antigen. Our investigations show a clear correlation between clinical findings in sheep leukosis, demonstration of C-type particles in lymphocyte cultures, and antibody reactions.

Abstract Electron transport-coupled phosphorylation with fumarate as terminal acceptor inWolinella succinogenes yields less than 1 ATP/2 electrons. The $$\Delta \tilde \mu _{\text{H}} $$ generated by the electron transport is 0.18V and the H+/electron ratio is 1. The electron transport chain is made up of two dehydrogenases (hydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase) that catalyze the reduction of menaquinone, and fumarate reductase which catalyzes the oxidation of menaquinol.C-type cytochromes are not involved. The phosphorylative electron transport with sulfur as terminal acceptor inW. succinogenes orDesulfuromonas acetoxidans does not involve known quinones. The ATP yields should be even smaller than those with fumarate. Succinate oxidation by sulfur, which is a catabolic reaction inD. acetoxidans, is accomplished by reversed electron transport.

Abstract Resection of the ventricular folds of the larynx was done, with the aid of a carbon dioxide laser, on seven patients who had either an essential or a symptomatic ventricular dysphonia. The initial results were very encouraging, but the ventricular dysphonia recurred in two patients. A problematic case history is summarized, exemplifying difficulties in choosing the right patients for surgery.
