For the MM minimum energy conformation obtained by conformational analysis, molecular orbital (MO) calculations (MNDO and AM1) have also been performed. The geometries obtained have been compared with the experimental ones extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). A qualitative structure-activity relationship has been pointed out based on the electrostatic potentials calculated at different positions on the electronic surface.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In position space, the 1 P - 3 P difference in the intracule densities shows that the probability of a small interelectronic distance is larger in the triplet for all the six atoms, as reported for the lightest Be atom in the literature. The position-space extracule density clarifies that the triplet electrons are more likely to be at opposite positions with respect to the nucleus than the singlet electrons for all the atoms. In momentum space, the singlet generally has a larger probability of a small relative momentum between two electrons as a naïve manifestation of the Fermi hole in the triplet. The extracule density in momentum space shows that the 1 P term has a distribution larger in a large center-of-mass momentum region than the 3 P term.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Analysis of Se at minor and trace levels is relatively complicated and destructive procedures are frequently required. In this work the determination of Se by epithemal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) in 17 samples from Cuban nickel industry was investigated. Application of ENAA allowed nondestructive determination of Se concentration down to ppm level in spite of the presence of high Co, Fe, Ni and Cr contents in the samples. For attenuation of the thermal neutron flux a Cd filter was utilized.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1540-8191Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: A consecutive series of 98 patients ranging from 21/2 to 79 years of age underwent mitral valve replacement using the superior approach that entails an atriotomy done between the superior vena cava and the ascending aorta prolonging it into the left superior pulmonary vein. The technique opens the roof of the left atrium without dissection, frequently without the need for double cannulation of the right atrium. No mobilization of the heart is involved, which is left in its normal position. There were 62 patients undergoing replacement alone, 22 combined with coronary bypass surgery, 10 with simultaneous aortic valve replacement, 2 with coronary bypass and left ventricular aneurysm resection, and 2 others combined with ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure and placement of an extracardiac conduit. Forty-six were done for stenosis and 52 for regurgitation. No technical difficulties were encountered, and the valve can easily be replaced through an incision slightly larger than the diameter of the prosthesis being implanted. Since the heart is not mobilized, the ventricles remain immersed in the cold topical solution (4° C) in addition to the administration of cardioplegia for myocardial protection. The access is simple and offers better exposure for the assisting surgeon than the usual inter-atrial groove approach. Important steps of the technique are clarified.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Hemoptysis may occur due to erosion of the aneurysm into a bronchus or the pulmonary parenchyma. This report describes the technique in a patient with a descending thoracic aneurysm who underwent emergent resection of the aneurysm with en bloc removal of the involved left lower lobe of the lung.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1540-8191Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Background: A new operation to relieve pulmonary obstruction is proposed for patients with corrected transposition of the great vessels and pulmonary stenosis (PS). A right transatrial approach involves excising or detaching the right-sided atrioventricular valve (AV). Next, the pulmonary outflow tract is opened wide with an incision extending from the right-sided ventricle upward across the AV valve annulus. This incision extends into the main trunk of the pulmonary artery located behind the right atrium. A patch, with or without implantation of a pulmonary valve prosthesis, widens the outflow tract, thus avoiding use of an extracardiac conduit. Method: We describe this operation performed in a 51-year-old man who had previously undergone correction with an extracardiac conduit that had become obstructed. The patient had severe right-sided AV valve insufficiency and complete heart block with a functioning transvenous pacemaker. We replaced the right-sided AV valve and positioned the permanent pacemaker lead outside of the prosthetic skirt. The PS was corrected as described above and a pulmonary prosthetic valve implanted. Use of an extracardiac conduit was avoided altogether. Conclusion: This technique may be applicable even without excising the right-sided AV valve. The clinical result for our patient is still optimal 4 years after surgery.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
