Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: Qualitative Methods for Health Research" ist eine gut geschriebene Einleitung für Professionelle im Gesundheitswesen, die an qualitativen Perspektiven, Methoden und Analysemodi interessiert sind. Die Autorinnen diskutieren Schlüsseltexte und "apt case studies" aus den Bereichen der Medizinsoziologie und -anthropologie, der kritischen Theorie, der Ethnografie, zu Public Health und Forschungsethik, um die Verdienste und – mutigerweise – auch die Nachteile qualitativer Strategien und Perspektiven zu veranschaulichen. Aufbau und Layout des Textes sind sehr lesefreundlich, und es werden zahlreiche interessante Fallstudien aus der Forschungsarbeit der Autorinnen und von anderen vorgestellt. Was die Spaltung zwischen qualitativen und quantitativen Ansätzen angeht, sind die Autorinnen um Annäherung bemüht, wobei die teilweise fehlende theoretische Tiefe sicherlich nicht den Vorlieben oder analytischen Fähigkeiten der Autorinnen geschuldet ist, sondern deren Anliegen, ein möglichst breites Publikum zu erreichen. GREEN und THOROGOOD diskutieren die Bedeutsamkeit von ontologischen und epistemologischen Fragen in der Gesundheitsforschung ohne (post-) postmoderne Scheu. Eher ein freundlicher Begleiter denn eine Schritt-für-Schritt-Rezeptur, versucht das Buch angehenden Forscher(inne)n aufzuzeigen, weshalb es unerlässlich ist, Forschungsfragen korrekt zu formulieren und jeweils adäquate Methoden und Fragestellungen zu verwenden. Auch wird auf die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten einer überzeugenden Darstellung von Forschungsergebnissen hingewiesen. Die erfrischende und ehrliche Schreibweise macht den Text zu einer überzeugenden, spannenden Einführung in Fragen der qualitativen Forschung im Gesundheitswesen und der Gesundheitsfürsorge.Qualitative Methods for Health Research is a well written introductory text for health professionals who are stretching toward more qualitative perspectives, methods and modes of analysis. The authors discuss key texts and apt case studies from medical sociology and medical anthropology, critical theory, ethnography, public health and research ethics to exemplify the merits of (and unflinchingly note the drawbacks of) qualitative strategies and perspectives. The text is reader-friendly in layout and pace and presents many interesting case studies drawn from the authors' research and that of others. It aims for rapprochement rather than scorched earth in its handling of the qualitative/quantitative divide. As such, it breaks little theoretical ground, but that is probably more a sign of the intended audience (the not-yet converted) than of the predilections and analytical skills of the authors. GREEN and THOROGOOD discuss the importance of considering epistemological and ontological questions in health research, but without getting bogged down in post- and post-postmodern anxieties. More of a friendly companion than a step-by-step recipe book, this text aims to show budding researchers not so much how, but rather, why to frame research questions better, how to conceptualize more appropriate choices of method, and ways that researchers can present data in more multiplex, multi-voiced fashion so as to be more persuasive. The writing is fresh, the perspective is honest and the outcome is a generally compelling, thrills-and-spills introduction to qualitative research on health issues and in health-care settings.Métodos cualitativos en la investigación de la salud es un bien escrito texto introductorio para los profesionales de la salud que se dirigen hacia perspectivas, métodos y modos de análisis más cualitativos. Los autores discuten textos clave y estudios de caso pertinentes desde la sociología médica y la antropología médica, teoría crítica, etnografía, salud pública y ética en la investigación para ejemplificar los méritos (y valientemente notar las dificultades) de las estrategias y perspectivas cualitativas. El texto es de lectura amigable en su esquema y ritmo, y presenta muchos estudios de caso interesantes extraídos de la investigación de los autores y de otros investigadores. Su objetivo es más bien re-enfocar antes que destruir en lo relativo a la división cualitativo/cuantitativo. Como tal, tiene poco fundamento teórico, pero eso es más probablemente un signo de la audiencia a quien se dirige (aquellos todavía no conversos) que de las predilecciones y habilidades analíticas de los autores. GREEN y THOROGOOD discuten la importancia de considerar preguntas epistemológicas y ontológicas en la investigación de la salud, pero sin estancarse en angustias post- ni post-postmodernas. Este texto que es más un compañero amigable que un libro de recetas paso a paso, tiene como objetivo mostrar a los investigadores novatos no tanto cómo, sino más bien por qué enmarcar mejor las preguntas de investigación, cómo conceptualizar de manera más apropiada las elecciones de método, y formas en que los investigadores pueden presentar los datos en estilos más múltiples y con múltiples voces, de manera que sean más persuasivos. Einige der Texte wurden für die Publikation eingehend überarbeitet. Das weit gefächerte Interessensgebiet des Autors reicht von der Religionssoziologie über australische Aborigines, Phänomenologie, Riten und Japan bis hin zu Anthropologiegeschichte und Kritischer Theorie. KÖPPINGs Ziel ist es, "die Wandlungs- und Transformationsprozesse [zu verdeutlichen], die aus unterschiedlichsten kommunikativen Begegnungen resultieren" (S.13). Der Autor sieht das Werk des deutschen Ethnologen Adolf BASTIAN (1826-1905) als frühe Form der Feldforschung, die von der Arbeit Johann Gottfried HERDERs und Alexander von HUMBOLDTs inspiriert gewesen sei. Er kritisiert die postmoderne Vergesslichkeit, indem er den Arbeiten vernachlässigter französischer Theoretiker wie Michel LEIRIS und George BATAILLE zu ihrem Recht verhelfen will. KÖPPING bemerkt sowohl im Bereich der eigentlichen Forschung als auch auf dem Gebiet der Anthropologie eine kulturelle Voreingenommenheit und "Krisen der Repräsentation", die sich u.a. darin zeigen, dass die ethnografische Anthropologie paradoxerweise nur in einem konservativen Sinne transgressiv ist. Mit anderen Worten sind unsere Krisen nicht politisch, sondern intellektuell; die kulturelle Voreingenommenheit wird am ehesten am Schreibtisch wahrgenommen, nicht im Feld. KÖPPING aims to make explicit "the processes of change and transformation that are brought about through communicative encounters of many different type[s]" (p.13). The author suggests an earlier origin of "fieldwork" in the work of the 19th-century German ethnologist, Adolf BASTIAN, whose initiatives he traces from the work of Johann Gottfried HERDER and Alexander von HUMBOLDT, and scolds amnesiac post-modernists by rehabilitating the works of neglected French theorists such as Michel LEIRIS and George BATAILLE. He reads various "crises" of representation and "predicaments" of culture in the field (where research is conducted) and in the field of anthropology (where debates are carried out) as meaning that ethnographic anthropology is still, somewhat paradoxically, only conservatively transgressive. Our crises, in other words, are writerly, not political, and our predicaments are felt most acutely in the armchair, not in the tent or nearby. The author reminds us of our ludic impulses, and of the transgressive nature of life itself over death, misfortune and circumstance.
