Measurements ofγ-γ andα-γ coincidences and half-lives were performed. Twoα-emitting states in187Pb were found with half-lives of 15.2±0.3 s and 18.3±0.3 s, respectively. Theα-γ coincidences yielded excitation energy and possible spin values for a few levels in183Hg. Gamma-transitions in187Tl were identified and a level scheme for187Tl is proposed on the basis of the coincidence relationships and the level systematics of the heavier odd-thallium isotopes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A number of low-energy very-converted transitions are observed in the decay. It is shown that the enhanced conversion in these cases comes from an E0 component rather than from an anomaly in theM1 conversion process. A systematic pattern of bands interconnected with these very converted transitions is presented as evidence for a new type of particle-core coupling in185, 187Au.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Spins and parities were assigned from neutron-gatedγ-ray angular distributions and excitation functions using the OSIRIS anti-Compton spectrometer. The bands are interpreted to be built on the well-deformed Nilsson states: [442] 5/2 and [301] 3/2. Energies for both bands and the order of magnitude of the mixing ratios in thef 5/2 band can be reproduced within the single-particle-plus-rotor model, while the experimentalQ(I→I−1)/Q(I→I−2) ratios, deduced from mixing ratios and branching ratios, exhibit large deviations by a factor 4 to 6 from theoretical values (which are around one). An explanation of this effect may be found by treating the two rotational bands each as a result of mixing between rotational bands of oblate and prolate states; thus explaining the large difference between B(E2,I→I−1) andB(E2, I →I−2) in the bands of75Kr.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-601XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract The strength of electric monopole (E0) transitions is related to differences in mean-square charge radii and differences in quadrupole deformation in nuclei. Estimates are made of E0 decay versus M1, E1, and E2 decay out of superdeformed bands. It is suggested that E0 decay may dominate, providing a (partial) answer to the superdeformed band “drainingr problem.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9540Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract The phenomena associated with shape coexistence and intruder states are illustrated with examples from the Pt, Au, Hg, Tλ, Pb and Bi isotopes which lie far from beta stability midway between closed neutron shells 82 and 126. The type of spectroscopic measurements which have already been developed to investigate these structures as well as those types of measurements needed to extend and quantify the analysis, such as on-line nuclear orientation, are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy of184Pt as well as on-line nuclear orientation measurements of184Au were done. A new low-lying level scheme of184Pt is proposed. Two coexisting bands with different deformations and their respective γ-vibrational bands are established. Internal conversion coefficients for interband transitions between states with the same spin are extracted from the spectroscopy measurements. The relative E0 contents of the transitions are determined by combining internal conversion coefficients with E2/M1 mixing ratios deduced from gamma-ray anisotropies measured from oriented nuclei.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The Au atoms were obtained as daughters of mass-separated Hg isotopes produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, ionized by a three-step resonant photoionization process, detected and mass-selected by time of flight. A drastic change of the nuclear charge radius was observed between187Au and186Au, which is interpreted as an onset of strong deformation of β2 ≈ 0.25 in186Au and185Au.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1741-2765Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract This paper presents the initial results of a research project concerning the mechanism of head injury. In order to begin to define the mechanism, it is necessary to determine mechanical properties of the various skull bones, organize them into constitutive equations, and develop a structural model of the skull. The material presented is concerned primarily with the development of experimental procedures and the results which have been obtained. The specimen-testing program has been split into four parts: (1) The procural of 3/4-in. and 11/2-in.-diam plugs from human skulls at autopsy and the precise determination of specimen location and orientation; (2) the fabrication and strain gaging of small test specimens for basic tension, compression, tension-compression, and shear tests; (3) the conducting of tests; and (4) the correlation of experimental findings with microscopic structure by standard and nonstandard techniques of histology.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The program was conducted utilizing a mild steel fiber embedded in an epoxy resin system. The fiber was loaded axially with an increasing compressive force until buckling occurred. Along with determination of the critical load for the fiber, the maximum shearing stress at any point in the epoxy matrix was determined using two-dimension photoelastic stress analysis. In the analytical study, the fiber was modeled by a series of bending elements and the matrix by an assemblage of constant-strain triangular elements. The total system was thus modeled by the two types of elements connected at common nodal points. The instability was solved as a standard eigenvalue problem and the stress tensor was obtained by finite element stress analysis.Additional Material: 7 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
