The research reported here had the objective of evaluating the effect of trifluralin (2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-trifluoromethylaniline), bifenox (methyl-5-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-nitrobenzoate) and vernolate (S-propylN,N-dipropyl-(thiocarbamate)) on soyabean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) leaf wax production. The applications of vernolate at 3.36 and 5.4 kg ai ha−1 reduced the chloroform-soluble extraction of the soyabean leaves to 90% and 88%, respectively, under glasshouse conditions and to 83% and 81%, respectively, under field conditions, when compared to the untreated control taken as 100%. Trifluralin, bifenox and vernolate at 1.68 kg ai ha−1 did not reduce leaf wax production.

[Auszug] Inbreeding, which can lead to the loss of genetic variation or the accumulation of deleterious alleles, has been shown to reduce fitness in wild, zoo, laboratory and farmed animals. But it has been proposed that when combined with selection, inbreeding may purge deleterious alleles. Here ...

: A river basin-wide water quality management system is considered. The river receives thermal as well as organic wastes. At-source treatment of these pollutants is imposed to control the basin-wide water quality. The related water quality standards are: the minimum DO concentration, the maximum allowable BOD concentration, the maximum allowable stream temperature, and the allowable rise in stream temperature. The general dynamic mathematical model representing water quality in streams and the thermal effects on BOD and DO concentrations is presented. The model is highly nonlinear in nature. The optimal management problem involving the model is solved by a recently developed nonlinear propgramming technique - the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. Comparison of results obtained by the GRG method vs. dynamic programming, and of results using a more realistic mathematical model vs. a simple model are presented. The analysis procedure can be applied to designing new and examining existing water quality programs, and to study the influence of alternate policies and constraints.

Abstract The use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of superficial tumours on the bladder wall is described. Details are given on the laser, methods of delivering light into the bladder, suitable commercial dosimetry systems and instrumentation suitable for making light measurements on the bladder wall during therapy. New alternative photosensitizers are discussed in some detail. Some early clinical results are presented and the current problems with this type of therapy are highlighted.

Abstract Pneumatic reduction of ileocolic intussusception in children has been used in Argentina and in China for more than 25 years but has only recently been attempted in North America. It is reported to be safer and more effective than reduction by the hydrostatic pressure of a barium suspension. Our preliminary experience with four patients has been rewarding and we believe it may become the method of choice.

Abstract  We have studied the embryonic development of the pars intercerebralis/central complex in the brain of the grasshopper using immunocytochemical and histochemical techniques. Expression of the cell-surface antigen lachesin reveals that the neuroblasts of the pars intercerebralis first differentiate from the neuroectoderm at around 26% of embryogenesis. Differentiation of medial and lateral neuroblasts occurs first. By the 28% stage a more or less uniform sheet of 20 neuroblasts has formed. As a result of both cell proliferation and cell translocation, the pars intercerebralis proliferative cluster in each hemisphere expands so that at 30% the most medial neuroblasts lie apposed at the midline. We followed the further development of the pars intercerebralis of each brain hemisphere using bromo-deoxy-uridine incorporation and osmium-ethyl-gallate staining. Within the pars intercerebralis itself, the neuroblasts redistribute into discrete subsets. The neuroblasts of each subset generate clusters of progeny which extend in a stereotypic, subset-specific direction in the brain. We have used this feature to identify one subset of four neuroblasts as being the likely progenitor cells for four clusters of embryonic neurons (W, X, Y, Z) which develop at around 55% of embryogenesis. We show that these progeny project axons via four discrete fascicles (w, x, y, z) into the embryonic central complex. At the single cell level, Golgi impregnation reveals that the axons from these neighbouring cell clusters remain discrete, and those from the same cluster tightly fasciculated, as they project into the central complex, consistent with a modular organization for this brain region.

Summary Changes in realtive levels of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) and cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) in prostates, epididymides and testes from guinea-pigs were examined at 3 different ages. During postnatal development, a decrease in the ratio of the 2 classes of protein kinases was seen in prostates, whereas increases of the ratios of the enzymes were found in epididymides and testes.

Summary Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 3′∶5′-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 3′∶5′-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependence of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.
