Enterobius (Oxyuris) vermicularis is the only nematode which infests man. It inhabits the large intestine and is of low pathogenicity. The ova are occasionally found in ectopic sites within the peritoneal cavity, usually as an asymptomatic granuloma. We describe the first patient to present with generalised peritonitis caused by rupture of a tubo-ovarian abscess containing the ova of Enterobius vermicularis.

[Auszug] Inversion 16 (Inv(16)) results in a fusion between genes CBFB on the q arm and MYH11 on the p arm and is associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtype M4Eo. CBFB encodes a protein (CBFb) that forms a heterodimeric transcription factor with RUNX1/AML1, which itself is disrupted by several ...

[Auszug] We are developing sets of mouse cDNAs with low redundancy for use in microarray analysis. The sets are based on sequence information from GenBank and the Washington University/Merck EST sequencing project. Related sequences from the non-redundant GenBank database were compared with mouse EST ...

Abstract This study is based on zooplankton samples collected in the upper 50 m by the F.R.V. “Manihine” in the Gulf of Aden during October–November, 1966 and February–March, 1967. Generally, the displacement volume of zooplankton varied between 20 and 67 ml/m2. Some higher values, up to 100 ml/m2, were also observed. The number of larval fish in positive hauls ranged from 2 to 282 larvae/m2. An inverse relationship between the number of larval fish and the accompanying volume of zooplankton was noted. This relationship is discussed. It is hypothesized that larval mortality due to predation in the Gulf of Aden during the northeast monsoon (November, February and March) was very high.

Summary Plants of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) inoculated first on one primary leaf with strain NY15 of bean common mosaic virus, as inducer, and after three days, on the opposite leaf, with the strain NL3 of bean black root virus, as challenger, did not show systemic necrosis characteristic of the latter strain. This interference phenomenon was studied by determining the amount, distribution and localization of both strains in the part of stem between primary leaves and first trifoliolate leaf in both challenge-inoculated and singly inoculated (control) plants. In dot-blot immunoassay, NL3 was detected seven days after its inoculation as challenger, whereas in control plants its presence was established on day four. Immunostained thick sections revealed a large accumulation of NL3 antigen on day eight in both phloem and cambium, but not yet in the xylem and cortex, contrasted with the controls. In immunogoldsilver stained semi-thin sections, most of the NL3 label was present in the companion cells and other phloem parenchyma cells, while in the control plants this virus was also present in xylem vessels and xylem parenchyma cells. Inducer strain NY15 was abundantly present in practically all the cells, including xylem vessels, from day two after challenge inoculation onwards. It is concluded that inducer strain NY15 hampers transport of NL3 to, and its spread in, the stem and prevents the latter strain from exerting its deleterious influence on the water conducting elements.

Abstract Identification of descriptive factors associated with marital happiness has often held few practical implications for the marriage counselor. The present research investigated the relationships between marital adjustment, values-systems, and self-concept for individuals and couples. Results indicate a high positive relationship between marital adjustment and self-concept, and between marital adjustment and people-oriented values-systems for individuals. Marital adjustment was correlated with self-concept, and non-statistical data suggest a relationship between marital adjustment and people-oriented values-systems when shared by spouses. Implications for practising marriage counselors are developed.

Abstract The 7 May 1992 filament disappearance in the low corona is analyzed. The cool and hot components of this event are studied, using Hα, soft X-ray and radio data. We first show the general effect of the disparition brusque (DB) on the life of the filament, which was a quiescent filament in the vicinity of an active region, and then give the history of the development of the 7 May event. The main stages of the event are: (i) the formation of hot arches spanning the cool filament; (ii) rise of the filament, with plasma ejection into the corona, in which we note some spreading of loops from the main body, with two distinct rising velocity phases of the Hα filament; (iii) formation of X-ray arches below the filament, the foot points of the arcades being two-ribbon Hα flare patches. The dynamics of Hα and X-rays features are given.

Abstract A glass-ceramic of nominal composition Bi1.5Pb0.4Sb0.1Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox was prepared by the melt-quenching method. The subsequent heat treatment of the sample at 860±5°C showedT c(zero) at 94 K. Exposure of the sample for 4 days in air improved itsT c(zero) to 140 K. In another similarly heat-treated sample, a two-step transition in the p-Tcurve at 140 K and at 1 1 1 K, was observed. The superconducting transition appeared to be of a percolative nature.
