    Summary The impact of freezing stress on the hydraulic conductivity was studied in 4- to 6-year-old branches of Populus x canadensis Moench “robusta” under gravity flow conditions. In fresh branch segments, the hydraulic conductivity was approximately 3–6×10-2 1 h-1kPa-1m and the specific conductivity approximately 22 1 h-1kPa-1m-1. Depending on the gas content of the solutions fed to the xylem of the segments, their hydraulic conductivity was lowered by a freezing-thawing cycle by 20–50%. However, full recovery of hydraulic conductivity was found after about 2 days. Degassed solutions in contrast showed no impediment to flow after the same treatment. The results give evidence, firstly, that the harmful effect of freezing on functioning of water conducting elements is due to the formation of bubbles in xylem sap containing gas in solution, and secondly, that recovery from this impediment is possible in microporous vessels within a period of about 2 days.

    Abstract In a randomized, prospective, multicenter trial, 227 children ranging in age from 3 to 17 years who had tonsillopharyngitis and a throat culture positive for group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) were treated with erythromycin estolate (40 mg/kg/d in two divided doses for five days) or penicillin V (30 mg/kg/d in three divided doses for ten days). Clinical signs and symptoms of tonsillopharyngitis were recorded, and throat cultures were obtained before treatment as well as one to three days and six weeks after treatment. Clinical success (cure and improvement) was observed on days 6 to 8 in 100 of 102 (98%) assessable children treated with erythromycin estolate and on days 11 to 13 in 97 of 99 (98%) assessable children treated with penicillin V. Of all patients showing clinical success, 11 were rated as improved, all of whom were treated with erythromycin estolate. There was a trend towards increased use of analgesic treatment in the erythromycin estolate group (41 % vs 33%). On completion of treatment, the rate of eradication of GABHS was 83.3% in the erythromycin estolate group compared with 87.9% in the penicillin V group. The difference is not significant but does not take into account patients excluded because of erythromycin resistance (3.7%). Clinical recurrence was observed in 11 (10.8%) patients treated with erythromycin estolate and in 6 (6.1%) patients treated with penicillin V (non-significant difference). Compliance in the erythromycin estolate group was statistically superior to that in the penicillin V group. The incidence and nature of adverse events were similar in both treatment groups.

    Abstract The colonization over time of cystic fibrosis patients byAspergillus fumigatus was investigated using a DNA fingerprinting method.Aspergillus fumigatus isolates collected sequentially for more than one year from six patients with cystic fibrosis were typed by Southern blot hybridization with a repetitive DNA sequence. Each cystic fibrosis patient harbored several strains ofAspergillus fumigatus that were isolated recurrently over time. Isolates collected from a cystic fibrosis patient with aspergilloma displayed the same genotype, suggesting that the infection was due to a single strain. Continuous isolation of the same genotype in another cystic fibrosis patient, however, was not correlated clinically with anAspergillus infection.

    Abstract. Proteinase 3 (PR3), is a matrix-degrading serine proteinase expressed in different hematopoietic cell lineages. The PR3 protein appears to regulate the myeloid differentiation and was found to be the autoantigen associated with Wegener granulomatosis. We have isolated and characterized the gene for mouse PR3 (mPR3) and determined its chromosomal location. The gene has been localized to Chromosome (Chr) 10. Comparison of mouse PR3 genomic structure with that of its human counterpart indicates that: 1) the mPR3 gene spans 7 kb organized in 5 exons and 4 introns, 2) the codons of His-Asp-Ser of the catalytic site are conserved and spread out over different exons, similar to the human gene, and 3) the gene product encodes a pre-proform of the protein. Knowledge of the structure and chromosomal location of the mPR3 gene may help better the understanding of the temporal and cell-specific expression of mouse PR3.
