However, the operation of a controlled-clearance gauge is more complicated than that of the familiar simple or reentrant designs. An investigation has been performed on a modified design of a piston gauge for which the same piston/cylinder can be operated in either the controlled-clearance, simple, or reentrant modes, to determine the degree of degradation in accuracy of measured pressure using the gauge in either the simple or reentrant modes as a standard. How the particular characterization of the standard gauge affects the calibration parameters of a test gauge is also explored. The effective areas of the test gauge are within 4.5 parts per million (ppm) when the standard is used in the simple mode instead of the controlled-clearance mode, up to a pressure of 28 MPa, whereas in the case of the reentrant mode this deviation increases from 2.5 ppm at 7 MPa to 14 ppm at 26 MPa.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-908XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract We have compared the properties of lymph node extracts from rat tissue with the properties of the supernatant obtained from the lectin-transformed rabbit peritoneal exudate lymphocytes in culture. Both extracts possess large amounts of lysosomal hydrolases, including particularly a cathepsin D-like protease. Both extracts are capable of increasing cutaneous permeability in the rat and causing a significant amount of cellular infiltration into the site of injection in the skin of these animals. This permeability-increasing activity and the cellular infiltration response to injection of these materials is completely inhibited by pepstatin and not by a variety of other inhibitors. Both extracts' permeability-increasing activity has a molecular weight range between 50,000 and 100,000 daltons and an isoelectric point of approximately 4.2. The molecular weight, the isoelectric point, and the inhibition by pepstatin are characteristic of cathepsin D from liver or spleen or granulocytes. Like cathepsin D, the permeability factor from LNPF and SRF extracts will release acid kinins from substrates which have been shown by Greenbaum and Houck to exist in the ground substance of rat skin. Finally, the breakdown products of the hydrolytic action of cathepsin D-like enzymes found in both lymph node extracts and supernatant from transformed lymphocytes are chemotactic for white blood cells. Thus, the two properties of cathepsin D described above, namely (a) the release of acid kinins which are capable of increasing the permeability of the microcirculation, and (b) the generation of chemotactic breakdown products via proteolysis could explain the two primary biological effects of both lymph node permeability factor and skin reactive factor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-908XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Evidence is presented to indicate that there exists in lymphoid tissue, as a result of transforming lymphocytes, a new lymphokine which is chemotactically specific for lymphocytes, called ‘lymphotactin’. Lymphotactin has been purified to electrophoretic homogeneity; has a molecular weight of 10,500 D and an isoelectric point of 5.9. Its role in amplifying the immune defense system by recruitment of naive lymphocytes into propinquity with the challenging antigen is suggested. Purification of macrophage migration inhibitory factor from thymus extracts to electrophoretic homogeneity leads to a compound of molecular weight of 36,500 D and an IEP of 6.9. Chemically it contains sialic acid ando-methyl glucopyranoside as its only carbohydrates. Purified MIF activates the macrophage phagocytically. Skin reactive factor and lymph node permeability factor have been isolated and purified and are found to be inhibited by pepstatin and antihistamine and to have an isoelectric point of pH 4.2 and a molecular weight of 50,000–100,000 D. It is believed that this anionic permeability increasing agent actually arises from the lysosomes of macrophages and lymphoblasts (the normal small lymphocyte having essentially no lysosomal organelles). Most T Tauri stars exhibit a broad emission or absorption band between 7.5 and 13.5µm which is attributed to silicate grains in the circumstellar environment. We imaged three spatially resolved T Tauri binaries through a set of broadband filters which include the spectral region occupied by the silicate band. Two of these objects (T Tauri and Haro 6–10) are “infrared companion” systems in which one component is optically much fainter but contributes strongly in the infrared. Both infrared companions exhibit a deep silicate absorption which is not present in their primaries, indicating that they suffer very strong local extinction which may be due to an edge-on circumstellar disk or to a dense shell. We also took low resolution spectra of the silicate feature of two unresolved T Tauris to look for narrow features in the silicate band which would indicate the presence of specific minerals such as olivine. We observed GK Tau, for which Cohen and Witteborn (1985) reported a narrow emission feature at 9.7µm, but do not find evidence for this feature, and conclude that it is either time-dependent or an artifact of absorption by telluric ozone.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This permeability activity had an isoelectric point of 7.4 while hyaluronidase was 9.4. It also could be separated from hyaluronidase by acrylamide gel electrophoresis. This yields a protein fraction with an isoelectric point of pH 4.2, which contains all the MGF activity. Upon electrophoresis of this fraction in analytical gels, one large and four small bands could be visualized. All bands were biologically active. This same “heterogenous” fraction ran as one band (mol wt 68,000) in SDS analytical gel electrophoresis, suggesting the ordered aggregation of this monomer. These images were taken at 11.7 μm and 9.8 μm with a 1μm filter bandpass at the diffraction limit of 0.6 arcsec, making them the highest resolution maps yet available of M82. In addition, we have obtained high-resolution (λ/Δλ=2000) maps of the velocity field of the nuclear disk of M82 in the 12.81 μm line emission of [NeII]. In these proceedings we present the 11.7 μm image, which will appear together with the 9.8 μm map and the [Ne II] spectra in a subsequent paper, now in preparation. Saline extracts of skin could not substitute for serum in the medium. Neither zinc nor cupric ion at tolerable concentrations (10-5M) increased the rate of cell proliferation.Normal human fibroblasts did not immediately start to divide from confluency into the “wound” space. Their generation time was about 32-39 hours. Fibroblasts from patients with cystic fibrosis began to divide almost immediately into the “wounded” area.
