In a proof-of-principle experiment frequencies between 6 and 21 GHz were generated with plasma densities in the 1012 cm−3 range and a capacitor period 2d=9.4 cm. In the present experiment, short pulses with frequencies between 39 and 84 GHz are generated in a structure with 2d=2 cm. The frequency spectra of these pulses are measured using a diffraction grating. The spectra are discrete, and their center frequency varies linearly with the gas pressure prior to ionization (or plasma density), as expected from theory. Their relative spectral width is around 18%, consistent with the expected number of cycles (six) contained in the pulses. An upper limit of 750 psec (bandwidth detection limited) is placed on the pulses length. The emitted frequency increases from 53 to 93 GHz when the capacitors are connected by pair to obtain a effective array period of 4 cm. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The radiation produced when a relativistically moving plasma/gas boundary (i.e., an ionization front) passes between alternatively biased capacitor electrodes is studied. Results of an experiment based on a design which incorporates the capacitor electrodes into an X band waveguide are presented. The waveguided design effectively couples nearly three orders of magnitude more power into the output than the previously unguided designs. Linear theory is extended to include the depletion of the laser energy as it propagates through the ionizable gas (i.e., laser depletion), and the effect of finite output pulse duration. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A relativistic ionization front passing through a capacitor array of period d=1 cm produces short pulses of tunable radiation between 39 and 84 GHz with a gas pressure between 0 and 30 mT. The frequency spectra of the produced pulses are discrete and exhibit full widths at half maximum between 12% and 28%, consistent with the expected width for six cycles' pulses. An upper bound of 750 ps (detection bandwidth limited) is placed on the pulse widths. These are the shortest pulses produced by a source of coherent radiation in this frequency range. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The pretreatment of mice with such heads conferred an apparent absolute local resistance to an otherwise lethal pneumococcal infection but had no effect on the growth of intrapcritoneal AA ascites sarcoma. Moreover, peritoneal cells from animals pretreated with glucan beads did nut protect the animals in a Winn assay.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The patient had widespread lymph node involvement, including a left inguinal mass which was clinically thought to represent recurrent lymphoma. The inguinal mass failed to regress after chemotherapy and irradiation, although lymphoma in other sites responded to chemotherapy. A skin biopsy of the area showed an ulcer and an abscess involving the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Microscopically, a diffuse infiltrate of foamy histiocytes was seen with numerous intracellular and extracellular, round and laminated bodies. Some of these bodies had a “targetoid” appearance, stained strongly with von-Kossa's calcium stain and showed the typical appearance of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies by electron microscopy. Cultured monocytes from the peripheral blood of the patient showed ultrastructural features similar to their tissue counterparts, suggesting a systemic involvement of the monocyte macrophage lineage. This case represents an unusual presentation of malakoplakia of the skin associated with relapsing malignant lymphoma in a patient on immunosuppressive drugs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The present study was conducted to test this idea. The preliminary experiments reported here were primarily designed to test whether AFP production and methionine adenosyltransferase activity change coordinately during normal development, and whether factors (hormones, injury) which influence AFP production in newborn or adult livers exert a coordinate effect on methionine adenosyltransferase activity or S-adenosylmethionine pool or vice versa. Some other data are included that relate to the problem, in particular, the serum methionine and AFP levels in children with Indian Childhood Cirrhosis, and the AFP levels in the first days of 3′M-DAB feeding in rats. The sum of our observations provides little support at this point to the concept of differentiation control at the methionine activation step. If any common denominator exists that promotes AFP production in several liver conditions, and accounts for parallel methionine-AFP modulations as observed in hereditary tyrosinemia, a more likely candidate might be an acute depletion of liver ATP pool.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In both cases the tumours had extensively infiltrated the small bowel wall and mesentery, and one had hepatic metastases. The mucosal surface of each specimen showed numerous, pale brown, sessile polyps which were restricted to the intestinal segment involved by carcinoid tumour, although not always closely related to neoplastic cells. The polyps were formed by the proliferation of capillaries, smooth muscle cells and myofibroblasts as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry and electronmicroscopy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
