    Hydrology is the science underlying the development and control of water resources of the earth. In the past, hydrologists have been trained initially in civil engineering, geology, meteorology or related fields, and have acquired knowledge of the complex hydrologic interrelationships by experience. Nowhere has it been possible for a student to obtain a coherent and complete training centered on the subject of water. The water specialist must learn to appraise the physical features of the earth and the role of various natural laws and scientific principles as they bear upon the occurrence, movement, and work of water in the hydrologic cycle of the earth and its atmosphere.The hydrologist not only works with water, but with people and their social, economic, and political problems. These problems are closely linked with water resources; man's failure to achieve a realistic integration of those factors has made water problems the greatest challenge on earth today.At the University of Arizona the new program includes undergraduate and graduate curricula leading to degrees in hydrology. The curriculum includes basic courses in hydromechanics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, geology, meteorology, and economics.The total impact of this new trend in hydrologic education will become evident in better solutions of water problems in many parts of the world.

    This is the first report of lipoma in the European eel Anguilla anguilla. In a single eel that was obtained from a polyculture fish farm in northern Egypt, a yellowish swelling (10 mm in diameter) was observed near the tip of the lower lip. The tumor was composed of mature lipocytes that occasionally fused into an unlined cystic space.

    An adult male blue shark, Prionace glauca (L.), caught in July 2000 by a recreational fisherman off Long Island, New York, USA, had a retained fishing hook from a previous capture. The hook penetrated the gastric wall and lacerated the right liver lobe. Macroscopic lesions consisted of transmural gastritis and peritonitis. Alteromonas sp. and Vibrio alginolyticus were isolated from the peritoneal fluid. In addition, a well delineated, sessile mass was found on the otherwise normal serosa of the right testis. Histopathological findings included mesothelial hyperplasia and hypertrophy involving diffusely the gastric, hepatic and parietal serosae, and forming a discrete testicular capsular mass compatible with mesothelioma. In the liver an intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, chronic hepatitis, biliary hyperplasia and increased numbers of melanomacrophages were found. In addition organisms compatible with histozoic and coelozoic myxosporeans were found within the skeletal muscle of the abdomen and intrahepatic bile ducts, respectively. This is the third literature report of a liver tumour and the first report of a coelomic mesothelioma from a shark.

    Abstract Suprasellar germinomas were identified in three wild-caught lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) from the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada. Histologically, the three tumors expanded the subarachnoid space of the ventral surface of the brain immediately adjacent to the pituitary gland and, in one case, infiltrated the adjacent neuropil. These tumors were characterized by nests and sheets of round cells with a high mitotic rate, separated by a scant amount of loose fibrovascular stroma. The stroma was infiltrated by a moderate number of small mononuclear cells, including rare CD3-immunoreactive lymphocytes. This is the first report of intracranial germinoma in a fish species.

    Abstract Arizona hydrogeology and water supply zones are classified into the Basin and Range Lowlands, the Central Highlands, and Plateau Uplands Hydrogeologic Provinces. Average annual precipitation for the state ranges from about five to more than 25 inches; average annual total is about 80 million acre-feet. More than 95 percent of rain and snowfall is lost to evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation potential ranges from about 48 to 86 inches per year and exceeds precipitation at all locations. Most water use is in the agricultural areas and large cities that lie in the Basin and Range Lowlands Province. Groundwater circulation and storage in the Basin and Range Lowlands Province occur chiefly in the extensive alluvial basins. Total groundwater in storage in the basins is more than 1.2 billion acre-feet. Because water use exceeds the rate of replenishment in these basins, groundwater levels have declined, and streamflow from the province is small. The Central Highlands Province provides large amounts of surface-water runoff to the Gila River system where the water is stored in large reservoirs and is used chiefly for agricultural and municipal purposes in the lowlands. Except for large groundwater supplies in fractured rock aquifers at a few locations, groundwater resources in the highlands are small. The Plateau Uplands Province is characterized by extensive flat-lying sandstone and limestone aquifers and by meager surface-water runoff. About 250,000 acre-feet of groundwater are yielded annually from springs that discharge to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon and to tributaries of the Gila River system along the Mogollon Rim. Largest groundwater yields to wells and to springs occur from abundantly fractured rocks along large faults. The Colorado River flows westward across the northern part of the state and forms the boundary between Arizona and California. Average annual flow in the Colorado River at Lees Ferry is about 12 million acre-feet. The river flow is regulated by reservoirs capable of storing more than 50 million acre-feet. All but about 2.7 million acre-feet per year of the river flow is used in Arizona and California or is lost to evaporation and transpiration.

    The number of nerve fibers entering a tooth gives an indication of the tooth's capacity to perform a sensory function. Nerve fiber development was quantitated from cross sections of the apical portions of 49 erupted human premolars at various stages of root development and in subjects up to 71 years of age. Neural development was incomplete in immature teeth, greatly variable in young mature teeth, and complete in older teeth. Myelinated axons changed in number but not in size during tooth development. There were significantly fewer myelinated axons in teeth with open and parallel apical foramina than in older teeth. Unmyelinated axons did not change significantly in number with development but fewer large axons were found in older teeth. The number of unmyelinated axons enclosed in a single boundary lamina tended to be lower in older teeth. As a physiologic correlate, threshold responses to electrical stimulation were also determined prior to premolar removal. Threshold stimulation decreased significantly with apical foramen maturation. A significant negative correlation was found between the threshold stimulus and the number of myelinated axons in fully developed teeth, but not in immature teeth.
