The results suggest that RS-1 is a member of the δ-Proteobacteria, and it appears to represent a new genus. RS-1 is the first bacterium reported outside the α-Proteobacteria that contains magnetite inclusions. RS-1 therefore disrupts the correlation between the α-Proteobacteria and possession of magnetite inclusions, and that between the δ-Proteobacteria and possession of greigite inclusions. Most production strategies are carried out at the shake-flask level and lack a mechanistic understanding of the antibiotic production process, offering poor prospects for successful scale-up. This review shows that data need to be collated on media and physical optima differences between the trophophase and idiophase, along with investigations into the control mechanisms for biosynthesis, to allow implementation of novel fermentation protocols. Immobilization may play a part in bioprocess intensification of marine bacterial antibiotic production, through again this area is understudied. Similarly, mass transfer and shear stress data of fermentations are needed to provide the bioreactor design requirements to intensify antibiotic biosynthesis, with process scale-up in mind. The application of bioprocess intensification methods to the production of antibiotics (and other metabolites) from marine microbes will become an important strategy for improving supply of natural products, in order to assess their suitability as chemotherapeutic drugs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Usually this configuration requires a large mass, a large vertical cross section in the water, and relatively small bearing surface area in contact with the bottom, resulting in poor seismic characteristics and increased noise sensitivity. An OBS recently developed at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics (HIG) minimizes these problems by physically separating the sensor from the main OBS package. Direct comparison between signals recorded by a standard HIG configuration Pop-up Ocean Bottom Seismometer (POBS) and signals from the new Isolated Sensor Ocean Bottom Seismometer (ISOBS), deployed near each other in deep water, clearly demonstrates the advantages of the isolated sensor configuration. Here, we report the isolation of a UV-A absorbing pigment from a UV-A resistant strain of Oscillatoria. This pigment has been purified, and its structure determined to be biopterin glucoside (BG), a compound chemically related to the pteridine pigments found in butterfly wings. A UV-A sensitive isolate did not produce significant levels of this chromophore. UV-A radiation was very effective in eliciting synthesis of BG. In addition, increased UV-A radiation, increased intracellular levels of BG. These data suggest that BG may protect the cyanobacterium from adverse effects of UV-A radiation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In this study, seven different marine cyanobacteria were used as recipient cells. First, transconjugation was carried out using the mobilizable transposon (Tn5) carrying plasmid pSUP1021. Transconjugants were observed in all marine cyanobacteria tested. Second, the broad-host-range vector pKT230 (IncQ) was tested for transconjugation. pKT230 has been successfully transferred in a marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. NKBG15041C, and replicated as an autonomous replicon without alteration in the restriction enzyme pattern. A maximum transfer efficiency of 5.2 × 10−4 transconjugants/recipient cell was observed, when mating was performed on agar plates containing low salinity (0.015 m NaCl) medium. During continuous culture, calcite particles (coccoliths) were detached from the cell surface by optimized air-bubbling, which greatly reduced the damage associated with previous sonication methods. Detached calcite particles could be continuously recovered directly from the culture medium using a nylon mesh membrane filtration module. Cells remained viable and continued to produce coccoliths during culture. The optimum productivity of ultrafine calcite particles was 18 mg/l per day.
