It is shown that in the vicinity of 77 K beryllium has a superior specific conductance compared with the nominally excellent metallic conductors aluminum and copper. It is concluded that beryllium should be considered for some conduction applications, despite its well known toxicity problems.

We have fabricated superconducting thin films by ion implanting Y into a base material formed by the coevaporation of BaF2 and Cu. The implantations were carried out at 77 K and resulted in the formation of an amorphous Y-Ba-Cu-F surface layer. Oxygen annealing with the addition of water vapor renders the base material insulating with a room-temperature resistance of 105 Ω. An identical annealing treatment on the Y-implanted material produces a superconductor with an onset temperature of 85 K.

Sintered samples of EuBa2Cu3Ox and GdBa2Cu3Ox with x(approximately-equal-to)7 have been irradiated at 90 °C with 800 MeV protons. The superconducting transition temperature decreases 1.7 K/1017 pcm−2 for both materials. The critical magnetization current density, characterizing intragranular conduction, increases a factor of 3 at zero field and relatively larger factors for finite magnetic fields at 7 and 75 K for fluences on the order of 1017 pcm−2. No and only minor differences between irradiated and unirradiated specimens were seen in calorimetric and transmission electron microscopy analyses, respectively.

The elastic constants of a well-characterized, high-purity single crystal were measured before and after hydrogen was added to change the hydrogen content from 500 at. ppm (3 wt. ppm) to 6900 at. ppm (40 wt. ppm). Comparison between the two sets of measurements shows that such a small change in hydrogen content has a disproportionately large effect on the elastic stiffness. In this case the increase in hydrogen content produced an increase in all directly measured elastic constants by the order of 0.5%. Further comparison of our data with earlier data indicates that other interstitial elements (e.g., C, N, and O) may also exert an inordinately large influence on the elastic stiffness.

Measurements of hydrogen loss and luminescence as a function of annealing temperature in porous silicon suggest that luminescence is attributable to electron-hole recombination in SiOx surface layers with an intensity that is dependent upon the surface hydrogen content. The luminescence is composed of three Gaussian bands similar to those found in amorphous SiO2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy show porous silicon has SiOx on the surface, which is comprised of many particles of about 10 nm size. Collectively, the data strongly support the previously proposed quantum confinement/luminescence center model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

During the development of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) coatings on flexible metal tapes, it has become evident that the achievable critical current (Ic) reaches a maximum value of about 200 A per cm of conductor width at a coating thickness of 1–2 μm. Additional YBCO beyond this thickness can actually reduce Ic. To investigate, critical current density (Jc) has been measured for samples with YBCO ranging from 0.39 to 6.3 μm in thickness. Several films were thinned by ion milling and remeasured with two significant results: almost no supercurrent is carried at thickness levels above 2 μm; and for films thicker than 3 μm, Jc is drastically reduced near the substrate as well. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

We have developed a multilayer architecture to enhance the supercurrent carrying capability of thick (〉1 μm) YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films. An interlayer of CeO2, which functions as a starting template for growth of subsequent high-quality YBCO layers, is used to prohibit the generation of microstructural defects that otherwise develop in the top region of thick YBCO films. Improved surface quality for a 3.3 μm thick YBCO film has been confirmed by the channeling data of Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. Compared to our routinely prepared single-layer YBCO thick film in which the supercurrent drops rapidly with increasing film thickness, this multilayer makes it possible to maintain critical current density over 1 MA/cm2 with less restrictions on the thickness of coated conductors. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The paper describes the changes in the cricopharyngeal muscle in seven cases of dysphagia resulting from obstruction at this level which was relieved by myotomy. Histological features included degeneration and regeneration in the muscle fibres with interstitial fibrosis which was severe in some of the cases. It is considered that this restrictive fibrosis is the cause of the dysphagia and that it is secondary to muscle fibre damage, the cause of which is at present obscure. Minor degrees of muscle damage and regeneration were seen rarely in controls and fibrosis was never present. There was no evidence of underlying vascular or neurological disease in six cases; the seventh had a previous history of scleroderma but this was not thought to be the cause of the cricopharyngeal lesion. The age incidence ranged from 1 to 5 years at the onset of dysphagia; in six of the seven it was 50 years or more.

Only in the case of copper has the metal chelate complex been found to be catalytically inactive. Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary Central neurofibromatosis and tuberose sclerosis are genetically distinct diseases but both produce hamartomas of the supporting cells of the central nervous system and malformation of other tissues. A case of central neurofibromatosis previously reported as tuberose sclerosis is presented and the distinguishing features of the two diseases reviewed. Earlier reports of their co-existence are re-examined and only one indisputable case found. Double diagnosis has frequently been made on the basis of non-specific changes common to both diseases, e. g. glial proliferation, fibrous dermal tumours; the misdiagnosis of dermal neurofibroma or adenoma sebaceum in the absence of histological proof or the misinterpretation of X-ray appearances of bone.
