ISSN: 1365-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: The DM production from INRA 200, an early maturing hybrid maize grown for silage, was 10±6 and 14 5 t/ha in mid-October 1972 and 1973 (4±2 and 5±8 tons/ac). The plant population in both years was approximately 112,000/ha (45,320/ac). Whole-crop and cob DM percentages were 18±2 and 21±3 for 1972 and 39±9 and 53±0 for 1973, respectively. The cob yields were 49 and 10±4 t/ha (2±0 and 4±1 tons/ac) in 1972 and 1973 and cob in the two years accounted for 46 and 72% of total yield. At harvest the 1973 crop was 4–6 weeks more mature than the 1972 crop. These differences were attributed to the difference in accumulated temperature recorded from May till October, which was 567°C days in 1972 and 817 in 1973. Whole-crop DM content, yield of cob and yield of cob as a percentage of total yield were studied against seasonal temperature accumulation. In the case of DM percentage there was a highly significant linear regression which showed that 627°C days were needed to mature maize to 24% DM content.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Umbilical vein ANP levels were significantly higher in the IUGR group when compared with normal pregnancies at term (mean 66 95%, CI 36–122 vs mean 37, 95% CI 29–47 pg/ml, P= 0.03) and were inversely related to umbilical artery pH (R2 = 65%; P= 0.003).Conclusions These data suggest that umbilical vein ANP levels are elevated in pregnancies complicated by IUGR, and rise appropriately in response to the stress of acidosis. In the absence of any receptor or second messenger defect within fetoplacental vascular smooth muscle, these data suggest that ANP is not directly implicated in the vascular pathophysiology of IUGR.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Between pH 2 and pH 10.5 the titration curve of washed native cod myofibrils can he accounted for solely on the basis of the probable dissociation constants of the carboxyl, histidyl, lysyl, and tyrosyl groups of the constituent proteins. On heat coagulation of washed cod myofibrils, a slight shift in the titration curve toward more alkaline pH's occurs, particularly between pH 4.5 and 7.0, but no evidence was obtained for experimentally significant changes in the numbers of titratable acid or basic groups. The titration curves of cod myofibrils prepared from fish stored at −14° for periods from 1 week up to 2 yr are very similar, and no evidence was obtained for loss of titratable acid or basic groups during frozen storage. The changes that occur in the titration curve of beef myofibrils on heat coagulation are similar to those occurring in the titration curve of cod myofibrils.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These included skin tests, total IgE, specific IgE, nasal and peripheral blood eosinophil counts. In addition, nasal biopsies were obtained in twenty out of sixty patients. It was apparent that patients with perennial rhinitis formed a heterogeneous group who could be divided into three groups based on the extent of immunological abnormality detected. Group 1 consisted of twenty patients who displayed no abnormality in any of the five parameters studied. Group 2 consisted of twenty-six patients in whom specific IgE was not detected but who had varying degrees of abnormal findings in the other laboratory parameters. The remaining fourteen patients formed a third group in whom specific IgE was detected in addition to abnormalities in other parameters. In general, patients with detectable specific IgE had a higher frequency of abnormal parameters, including abnormal histology of their nasal biopsy, than patients in whom no specific IgE was detected. The heterogeneous nature of perennial rhinitis is discussed. Despite the heterogeneous nature of the total patient group, the majority of patients (80%) treated with beclomethasone dipropionate improved compared to 20% improved in the placebo group. There was no difference in the drug effect between the three groups of patients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Pressor responsiveness to angiotensin II (AII) and phenylephrine (PE) was examined before and after 5 days of ACTH (1 mg, i.m., daily) or hydrocortisone (200 mg, orally, daily) in six normotensive men.2. Pulse pressure was higher prior to PE than AII infusion, presumably due to feeding.3. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was increased by both ACTH and hydrocortisone treatment, but more by ACTH.4. There were no significant changes in AII pressor responsiveness with either ACTH or hydrocortisone.5. ACTH increased pressor responsiveness to PE at 1.35 and 2 μg/kg per min, and hydrocortisone at 0.6-2 μg/kg per min, with falls in pulse rate at 0.3-0.9 μg/kg per min.6. Changes in pressor responsiveness do not explain ACTH hypertension.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
