Citizens are deemed to be vested with a basic knowledge of the public interest and are bound, under the terms of their civic identity, to consent individually to any legislative proposal which the community seeks to impose upon itself. The existence of such a duty to consent reflects for Marsiglio the way in which political society originally joined together into a corporate body. ISSN: 1399-3054Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: A portable freezing point meter was used in the field to measure the water potential gradients in sunflower (Helianthus annuus), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), corn (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo), potato (Solanum tuberosum), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and sugarbeets (Beta vulgaris). The measurements were made between daybreak and sunrise, and again during the middle of the afternoon on days when the potential evapotranspiration varied between 6.5 and 8.0 mm of water.The gradients varied from a maximum of 0.2 bar per cm in a wheat, down to an undetectable value for pumpkin. Although most of the soil in the root zone was kept at potentials above –1 bar, the bulk of the root tissue had water potentials of –5 to –10 bars. Differences in water potential between shaded and unshaded leaves, and between leaf tissue and guttation fluid suggested a similar drop of several bars between xylem elements and the surrounding leaf tissue in some plant species. Flood, rather than ebb, tides at the time of spawning combined with light north-west winds and low swell conditions to restrict the dispersal of coral propagules and, as a result, large amounts of coral spawn were trapped in the bay, forming extensive slicks. Fish and other animals began to die almost immediately, and over the next few days, over 1 million fish, representing at least 80 species, were washed ashore. A survey of the benthic communities revealed extensive mortality of corals and other reef animals over an area of about 3 km2. Live coral cover in this area decreased from 42.9% to 9.4% and several large coral colonies up to 10 m in diameter were killed. The observed mortality was presumably the result of hypoxia (oxygen depletion) created initially by the respiratory demand of the coral spawn and maintained by the biological oxygen demand of the decomposing spawn slicks and dead animals. Anecdotal reports of corals and other reef animals dying in the vicinity of coral spawn slicks on other reefs in Western Australia suggest that this phenomenon may be a relatively common event on shallow coral reefs where coral mass spawning occurs. These records and observations document, for the first time, a new source of natural disturbance that has a significant influence on the community structure of some coral reefs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

To review our experience with primary multifocal osseous lymphoma (PMOL), to characterize its imaging features, before and after treatment, and to correlate these features with clinical outcome. Design. Hospital charts and imaging studies of eight patients with PMOL were reviewed. These included bone radiographs, bone scans, CT and MRI. Number, distribution and appearance of lesions before treatment were evaluated; and post-treatment changes were assessed for evidence of healing or progression, correlated with clinical outcome. Results. A total of 63 lesions were identified by pre-treatment bone scan, 36 by MRI (including 10 not visible on bone scan) and 16 by radiographs. Twenty-one percent of lesions occurred about the knee, and 63% of patients had concomitant skull, distal femoral and proximal tibial lesions. The radiographic appearance ranged from lytic to sclerotic. Lesions were isointense to hematopoietic marrow on T2-weighted MR sequences. Only plain radiographic evidence of healing or progression correlated with clinical outcome. Conclusion. Distribution of PMOL was best assessed by bone scan. However, MRI revealed larger areas of marrow involvement and detected lesions in the pelvis not seen on bone scan. Marrow involvement around the knee was common, and the combination of skull, distal femoral and proximal tibial lesions may suggest the diagnosis. Radiographs underestimate the extent of disease but were the best modality for assessment of treatment response.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
