ISSN: 1365-3091Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Cemented layers in the shallow lagoonal, intertidal, and supratidal sediments surrounding the Qatar Peninsula, Persian Gulf, contain high-magnesian calcite and aragonite cements. The magnesian calcite appears to occur both as a primary precipitate and as a replacement of aragonite. These cements are believed to be forming today from sea-derived waters. Radiocarbon dating sets an upper age limit of about 4,500 years. Two major types of cemented layer can be distinguished: beachrocks form variably cemented units about 1 m thick at the surface of freely draining exposed beaches: cemented sheets a few cm thick form beneath the surface of broad intertidal sand flats by the growth, hardening, and coalescence of small friable lumps near low-tide level. Replacement of aragonite matrix, druse, and pellets by microcrystalline magnesian calcite is accomplished by dissolution and reprecipitation; detail is obliterated but the gross features of the original fabric are preserved. The process helps to explain the crystal fabrics of many older limestones.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Soluble solids (SS) % of raw sweet corn (SC), Silver Queen variety, was correlated with panel texture of deep-fried corn. The r = 0.896 and R2= 0.803. The SS range of corn was 19-26s. As corn of increasing SS was used, texture changed from that of succulent, low solids to less succulent, higher solids. Preference scores ranged from 2.4-3, placing samples between “liked moderately” and “liked slightly” categories. No preference was found among samples of the SS range used. Thus, SC of this variety may be allowed to reach at least 26% SS and still receive a score similar to that for corn with 19% SS. Deep-frying raw kernels decreased moisture by 6.8% and increased the oil content from 3.98 to 6.51%.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This study examined the effects of intra- versus extra-oral location of the reference electrode, the type of metallic probe used to make contact with the restoration, and scratching and brushing of the restoration surface. Dental amalgam restorations were measured in 40 human subjects. Results showed that only the location of the reference electrode affected the central tendency of the potential. The study discusses the significance of some experimental variables in the accurate measuring of metallic potentials and the need to consider individual subject differences when statistically analysing for the central tendency of a sample.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6052Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract We calculate the high-temperature (T 4) limit of the 3-graviton vertex function, with a single loop of internal scalar particles in thermal equilibrium. We use the analytically continued imaginary-time formalism. We verify a particular case of the Ward identity connecting the 3- and 2-graviton functions. This confirms that there is covariance under general coordinate transformations (which reduce to the identity at infinity). We remark that the ghost-ghost-graviton vertex (with ghost and graviton internal lines) has noT 4 term. This implies that the 3-graviton function with internal graviton (and ghost) lines must satisfy the Ward identity too, so it is possible for it to be proportional to the scalar contribution. We have verified this for that part of the vertex function which is manifestly symmetric and traceless in the six Lorentz indices.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-041XKeywords: Key words Lithium chloride ; Zebrafish ; Heart developmentSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The molecular signalling mechanisms that are believed to govern the patterning of the heart early in embryonic development are not well understood. We have investigated the events which occur during patterning of the vertebrate heart by exposing gastrula stage zebrafish embryos to lithium, which is known to affect the phosphoinositol signalling pathway. Treatment of embryos at 50% epiboly (5.25 h after fertilization at 28.5°C) with 0.3 m LiCl for 5–15 min, results in embryos with defects which range from mild to severe, depending on the length of time the embryos are exposed to lithium. In the heart, defects appear progressively in the inflow tract, the sinus venosus and atrium. By using an antibody that recognizes an atrium-specific isoform of myosin, our results show that lithium treatment at gastrulation specifically affects the atrium and sinus venosus, and has little obvious effect on the ventricle. Defects induced by lithium differ from those induced by retinoic acid (RA) treatment of similarly staged embryos, and suggest that lithium and RA may affect the patterning signals important for establishment of the vertebrate heart by acting on different populations of cells or by influencing different patterning pathways.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
