Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Imaging of the surface of a cleaved Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (BSCCO) single crystal with a scanning tunneling microscope reveals a series of repeating terraces, whose separations are then used to identify the atomic planes which are exposed. On each of the exposed planes, the incommensurate modulation is also clearly resolved with atomic resolution. The measured separations between the terraces lead to the deduction that any atomic layer can be exposed by mechanical cleavage of BSCCO. We, therefore, suggest that the identity of atomic planes, and the direction of tunneling, should always be taken into consideration when interpreting tunneling spectra obtained on such cleaved BSCCO crystals. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: We describe the design and development of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) which can operate at temperatures down to 240 mK and in magnetic fields up to 7 T with high spatial and energy resolution. The compact and rigid STM head is mounted directly on a low vibration, single shot, 3He refrigerator. This refrigerator can be operated at its base temperature continuously for several days before the 3He needs to be recondensed. The system is equipped with a sample transport manipulator from room temperature, and a cleavage device at low temperature, so that the cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum condition inside the cryostat can be utilized. A superconducting magnet provides a magnetic field of up to 7 T at the sample along the STM tip direction. Test results have shown that, at the base temperature, this instrument has better than 0.5 pm z-direction resolution in imaging mode, and better than 20 μV energy resolution in spectroscopy mode. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Plasma progesterone levels were measured in three groups of untreated women. (1) Nine women with follicle rupture, proved by laparotomy or laparoscopy, had values of ≥40 nmol/l on days 18–24 (days −10—5 from the next period); thus a value of 〈40 nmol/1 should not be taken as evidence of ovulation. (2) Nineteen healthy women with normal menstrual histories had hormone assays on alternate days during one cycle. In five of them all values were 〈38 nmol/1. (3) Forty women had a single progesterone assay on days 20–29 of a conceptual cycle. Eight of them had a level 〈40 nmol/l. Ovulation had certainly occurred in all of them, but it is difficult to assess whether the sample timing was optimal since there was no following menstrual period. Progesterone levels in drug-induced conceptual cycles were in general higher than those in spontaneous pregnancy cycles. Women with luteinization of the unruptured follicle frequently had values of 〉40 nmol/l. Eighty-five infants were growth retarded and 122 developed fetal distress or neonatal asphyxia. Of the infants whose mothers had either abnormal plasma oestriol or HPL levels, 58 per cent were growth retarded, while 65 and 73 per cent in each group respectively developed fetal distress. Excessive adrenal activityand ACTH secretion could not be suppressed with doses of corticosteroids sufficient to cause iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, even though part of the steroid dosage was administered in the late evening. The resistance to feed-back suppression was of the same order as that seen in Cushing's syndrome. Adrenalectomy was performed in the 16-year-old girl, and was followed by a menarche. The results clearly show vacuum tunneling of superconducting quasiparticles from atomically sharp tips. Observed deviations of the energy gap of the superconducting tip from its bulk value are attributed to the proximity effect. We show that a combination of a superconducting tip and an atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscope provides a means of achieving very high resolution local spectroscopy. ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Calculations indicate that high vibrational states of oxygen and chlorine can be excited using a series of nonresonant Raman pulses, where both the pump and the Stokes pulses are chirped with linear frequency sweeps. Most of the previously reported coherent processes (such as simple adiabatic passage) are seriously degraded when rotational effects are included. However, we find that the laser pulse parameters (intensity and bandwidth) required to invert population into high vibrational states via Raman chirped adiabatic passage are achievable using technology that is currently available.
