Summary A fall in diurnal rearing temperature (from 33°C to 28°C) during the 2 last larval instars ofSchistocerca gregaria induces a lengthening of development and a slowing down of growth. At 28°C, circulating levels of juvenile hormones, particularly those of JH3, diminish from the middle of the 4th instar but ecdysteroids and proteins accumulate in haemolymph.

    Notes:
Summary Octopamine enhanced the release of JH3 from isolated corpora allata of locusts in short-term cultures. This effect was suppressed when phentolamine (inhibitor of the octopamine receptors) was added to the culture medium. Moreover an octopamine-sensitive adenylate cyclase was found in the corpora allata. The results suggest a positive octopaminergic control on the activity of the corpora allata.

Summary JH I and JH III immunoreactive substances were detected in the hemolymph of imaginal females of the primitive insectThermobia domestica. Periodic changes in the levels of these hormones were investigated in correlation with molting and reproductive cycles in inseminated, virgin and precocene-treated females. The presumed influence of JH III on the various phases of vitellogenesis is discussed, also taking into account the periodic changes of the hemolymphatic ecdysteroid levels.

Summary As a result of the decrease of diurnal rearing temperature from 33 to 28°C the following phenomena were induced in adults ofSchistocerca gregaria: a) In females, a delay in the appearance of maximal levels of JH III and ecdysteroids in the hemolymph, a slowing down of oocyte growth, and an accumulation of hemolymph proteins; b) in males, a decrease of hemolymphatic JH III levels without changes in protein levels.

    Notes:
Summary JH III is the only JH detected by GLC-MS in medium from in vitro incubations of corpora allata of adult females ofCalliphora vomitoria. When corpora allata were removed from females at various times during the reproductive cycle and the JH III produced by the glands in vitro measured by a JH III radioimmunoassay, an increase in the level of synthesis was found to occur before previtellogenesis (0–24 h). A second increase appeared at the onset of vitellogenesis (72–83 h) and continued until the end of vitellogenesis (96 h) and the occurrence of chorionation (120 h). Since sexual receptivity develops with vitellogenesis, the significantly higher levels of JH III biosynthesis in vitro at this time supports a possible role for JH in the acquisitive of receptivity.

Abstract The double-differential inclusive di-jet cross section in photoproduction processes is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The cross section is determined as a function of the average transverse jet energyE T jets for ranges of the fractional energyξ γ jets of the parton from the photon side. An effective leading order parton distribution in the photon is determined at large parton fractional energies for scale between 80 〈p T 2 〈 1250 GeV2. The measurement is compatible with the logarithmic scale dependence that is predicted by perturbative QCD.

Abstract A search in the H1 experiment at HERA for scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons and squarks coupling to first generation fermions is presented in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 425 nb−1. For masses ranging up to ∼275 GeV, no significant evidence for the direct production of such particles is found in various possible decay channels. At high masses and beyond the centre of mass energy of 296 GeV a contact interaction analysis is used to further constrain the couplings and masses of new vector leptoquarks and to set lower limits on compositeness scales.

Abstract We present an experimental study of theep→eγ+p andep→eγ+X processes using data recorded by the H1 detector in 1993 at the electron-proton collider HERA. These processes are employed to measure the luminosity with an accuracy of 4.5 %. A subsample of theep→eγ+X events in which the hard photon is detected at angles θ γ ′ ≤ 0.45 mrad with respect to the incident electron direction is used to verify experimentally the size of radiative corrections to theep→eX inclusive cross section and to investigate the structure of the proton in theQ 2 domain down to 2 GeV2, lower than previously attained at HERA.
