    Melting the surface of Ag-Cu specimens with a laser or electron beam produces a variety of microstructures, the most interesting being a banded structure. In this letter we present a method, based on the interface response functions for solidification developed by Aziz and Kaplan [Acta Metall. 36, 2335 (1988)], for calculating the scanning velocity of the beam needed to bypass the banded structure and solidify the alloy in a microsegregation-free manner. When this velocity has been determined experimentally, as in the present Ag-Cu system, the width of the solid-liquid interface can be estimated.

    Abstract— A new method for accelerating the collection of near-threshold corrosion fatigue crack propagation data, using local hydrogen embrittlement in the crack tip region, has been investigated for ASTM A710 HSLA steel. Fatigue tests were conducted at 10 and 0.2 Hz (stress ratio, R= 0.1) on “constant K” contoured double cantilever beam (CDCB) specimens, to establish near-threshold crack growth rates in a locally hydrogen charged region at the crack tip. Hydrogen charging was then discontinued and crack growth rates were monitored in the uncharged material. Near-threshold fatigue crack growth rates were found to be 100 times faster in the locally hydrogen charged specimens than in the uncharged material. Fatigue thresholds, ΔKth, were defined in less than one fifth the time required for load shedding tests in air at 0.2 Hz. Although demonstrated for HSLA steels, the technique is applicable to any material which can be embrittled by hydrogen.

    There has been a dramatic rise in incidences of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. It has been suggested that the introduction and use of acid suppression therapy may be a factor in the rising incidences of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:This was a record linkage study, using a prescribing database and an endoscopy database. Patients who had undergone their first endoscopy during the period 1992–1995 and received the diagnosis of Barrett’s oesophagus or oesophagitis were identified. The prescribing of acid suppressants was compared for the 3 years prior to endoscopy, between those with Barrett’s oesophagus and those with oesophagitis.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:There was no significant difference between the Barrett’s patients and the oesophagitis patients in the proportion that had been exposed to acid suppression therapy (53.4% vs. 51.7%, P=0.704). The mean number of days of prescribing among those who had been exposed to acid suppression therapy was higher in the Barrett’s group (340.5 vs. 237.0 days, P=0.001).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Patients with Barrett’s oesophagus have received more acid suppressant therapy prior to diagnosis. The reasons for this are not clear. However, 46.6% of Barrett’s patients have not been exposed to acid suppressant therapy.

    Background : Proton-pump inhibitors are effective at preventing the acid component of gastro-oesophageal refluxate from entering the oesophagus. It is not clear whether proton-pump inhibitors prevent duodenogastro-oesophageal reflux.Aim : To measure oesophageal exposure to duodenogastro-oesophageal refluxate while on proton-pump inhibitors in patients with Barrett's oesophagus.Methods : Twenty-five patients (23 male) with Barrett's oesophagus underwent 24 h oesophageal pH and Bilitec 2000 monitoring while on omeprazole 40 mg/day (n = 19) or omeprazole 60 mg/day (n = 6). All patients were undergoing argon plasma ablation of their Barrett's epithelium as part of a clinical trial and the Bilitec measurements were only carried out after the ablation had been completed.Results : 20 of 25 (80%) patients had a normal oesophageal pH profile. Fifteen of the 25 (60%) had abnormal oesophageal exposure to bile as measured by Bilitec 2000. Of the 20 patients who had a normal 24 h oesophageal pH profile, 11 (55%) had pathological exposure to bile in their oesophagus.Conclusion : Complete acid suppression does not guarantee elimination of duodenogastro-oesophageal reflux.

    Conclusions Allelic sequencing combined with comparative analyses of population-specific haplotypes have provided persuasive evidence that the Type 1 diabetes susceptibility determinants associated and linked to the MHC class II region are partly due to DQ allelic polymorphism. A central role for an immune response molecule in this disease is consistent with many of the features of Type 1 diabetes. Identification of autoantigens and cloning of pathogenic T cells will help elucidate the roles of class II alleles in disease. This and mapping of other genes both inside and outside the MHC will eventually lead to a way of preventing or at least decreasing beta cell destruction.

    Summary Premature cardiovascular disease is common in insulin-dependent diabetic (IDDM) patients who develop diabetic nephropathy. Genetic polymorphism within the renin-angiotensin system has been implicated in the aetiology of a number of cardiovascular disorders; these loci are therefore candidate genes for susceptibility to diabetic renal disease. We have examined the angiotensin converting enzyme insertion/deletion polymorphism and angiotensinogen methionine 235 threonine polymorphism in a large cohort of Caucasian patients with IDDM and diabetic nephropathy. Patients were classified as having nephropathy by the presence of persistent dipstick positive proteinuria (in the absence of other causes), retinopathy and hypertension (n = 242). Three groups were examined for comparison: ethnically matched non-diabetic subjects (n = 187); a geographically defined cohort of newly diagnosed diabetic patients (n = 341); and IDDM patients with long duration of disease ( 〉 15 years) and no evidence of overt nephropathy (n = 166). No significant difference was seen in distribution of angiotensin converting enzyme or angiotensinogen genotypes between IDDM patients with nephropathy and recently diagnosed diabetic subjects (p = 0.282 and 0.584, respectively), nor the long-duration non-nephropathy diabetic subjects (p = 0.701 and 0.190, respectively). We conclude that these genetic loci are unlikely to influence susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy in IDDM in the United Kingdom. [Diabetologia (1996) 39: 1108–1114]

    Abstract The creep properties of silicon nitride containing 6 wt % yttria and 2 wt% alumina have been determined in the temperature range 1573 to 1673 K. The stress exponent, n, in the equation $$\dot \varepsilon $$ ∝ σ n was determined to be 2.00±0.15 and the true activation energy was found to be 692±25 kJ mol−1. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed that deformation occurred in the grain boundary glassy phase accompanied by microcrack formation and cavitation. The steady state creep results are consistent with a diffusion controlled creep mechanism involving nitrogen diffusion through the grain boundary glassy phase.

    Summary Geometric descriptors are becoming popular tools for encoding molecular shape, for use in database screening and clustering calculations. They provide condensed representations of complex objects and, as a consequence, can usually be compared quite rapidly. Here we present a number of new descriptors and methods for the quantification of molecular shape similarity. The techniques are tested using two different biological systems, with particular emphasis on their potential utility as methods for prescreening shape-based database searches. Results are compared with data sets produced using the DOCK program. We find that such similarity evaluations are useful for finding molecules with complementary shape, and that they contain an enriched number of potential DOCK hits when compared to the original databases. Significant limitations in the utility of such DOCK prescreens are discussed, and potential solutions are considered.
