ISSN: 1090-6533Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract An analysis is made of four-wave mixing of laser radiation interacting with an ultracold degenerate ensemble of boson atoms trapped in a magnetic trap. It is shown that the existence of long-range order in this type of atomic system leads to a new mechanism for the generation of the reversed wave whose experimental manifestation should differ from four-wave mixing in a nondegenerate gas. A similar nonlinear optical effect may be used for diagnostics of an ultracold gas at temperatures not much lower than the phase transition temperature.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1090-6533Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract Propagation of a resonant laser pulse through an optically dense Bose-Einstein condensate is theoretically investigated. Changes in the spatial distribution of the condensate after the laser pulse propagation are analyzed. It is shown that atoms escape from the condensate due to the joint action of two factors: the transition of atoms from the ground state to an excited state upon absorption of the resonant photons and the effect of a zero-result measurement. The latter effect is interpreted in terms of the theory of quantum measurements.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A superposition of operators is found — one annihilating an atom in a metastable state and the other annihilating a photon in resonance with a transition from the ground state to an excited state — which is an adiabatic invariant of the problem (Raman polariton). Possible applications for Bose-condensate diagnostics and development of atomic lasers are proposed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1090-6509Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract We derive equations that describe the dynamics of three-level atoms with a cascade system of levels interacting with two resonant coherent fields in conditions where cooperative relaxation dominates over incoherent spontaneous emission. We calculate the temporal dynamics of the values of the atomic populations. The possibility of coherent population trapping in the presence of the cooperative decay is established. Finally, we calculate the averaged population of the intermediate level as a function of detuning for different values of the coupling constant.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1090-6533Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract A method is proposed for resolving experimentally the details of the resonant fluorescence spectrum of a Bose condensate within a homogeneous line whose width is greatly increased because of collective effects. A discussion is presented concerning the application of this method for determining the shifts of the resonant frequencies of the transitions in the condensate as compared to the usual case of nondegenerate atom ensembles.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A numerical calculation of the temporal dynamics of the values of the atomic populations is performed. It is shown that coherent population trapping in the presence of cooperative decay is possible. The quantities characterizing this phenomenon are calculated—the width of the black line and the transition time to coherent trapping in this scheme.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

If the laser light intensity does not exceed a certain threshold value (intensity of coherent population trapping switching on multiplied by square of ratio of Doppler broadening to natural linewidth), the propagation law is strongly influenced by atomic motion: the laser intensity decreases neither exponentially, nor linearily, but as second-order polynomial of the optical depth. Above this threshold the propagation law is linear.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
