Publication Date: 2024-12-13Description: The idea of architecture using bio-based materials that are produced on an industrial scale under laboratory conditions and can be customized at the molecular level still belongs to the realm of science fiction. However, with the publication of their findings on plant-based, lab-grown materials, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have recently shown that such a future is well and truly possible. Their long-term goal: customizable timber, grown in a lab. Based on current research results and discourse, this article examines the potential of lab-grown materials for tomorrow’s architecture and how they could influence the design process. It also identifies possible positive and negative environmental impacts and discusses the role that lab-grown materials could play in the context of a material transition toward bio-based, sustainable materials in the construction sector. Keywords: Naturwissenschaften ; Ökologie ; Science ; Ecology ; bio-based materials; bioprinting; environmental impacts; lab-grown ; Naturwissenschaften, Technik(wissenschaften), angewandte Wissenschaften ; Ökologie und Umwelt ; Natural Science and Engineering, Applied Sciences ; Ecology, Environment ; Architektur ; Baugewerbe ; Nachhaltigkeit ; Umweltfreundlichkeit ; Biotechnik ; architecture ; construction industry ; sustainability ; environmental safety ; biotechnologyType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

ISSN: 1432-1750Keywords: Ethambutol ; Rifampicin ; Serum levels ; ChildrenSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Continuing our investigations on ethambutol serum levels in children, an oral dosage of 35 mg/kg body weight was given to the three age groups. Average serum concentrations reached 2 µg/ml ethambutol, as postulated by Pyle in the age groups 6 to 〈10 and 10 to 14 years. When ethambutol was given in combination with rifampicin (10 mg/kg) serum levels of ethambutol were higher than when it was given alone, so that even in the age group 2 to 〈6 years, average serum concentrations rose to a maximum of more than 2 µg/ml. Vice versa, rifampicin serum levels tended to be lower after combined administration than when rifampicin was given alone. Average rifampicin serum levels were almost the same in the three age groups under investigation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Contents Cycloconverters and current-source-inverters both have proved performance for drives in the MW-range. They operate best in combination with a synchronous motor. The cycloconverter drive has very low torque ripple from zero start-up until a relatively small frequency, while the current-source-inverter causes high torque ripple disturbing only at low frequencies and its maximum frequency is much higher than that of the cycloconverter. This paper describes the synthesis of both systems.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-2013Keywords: Postganglionic vasoconstrictor neurones ; Muscarinic system ; After-dischargesSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract 1. Postganglionic neurones to hairy skin and to skeletal muscle of the cat's hindlimb, probably vasoconstrictor in function, have been investigated for their response characteristics on repetitive stimulation of the preganglionic axons in the lumbar sympathetic trunk in chloralose anaesthetized cats. 2. Repetitive stimulation of the preganglionic axons with 50 stimuli at 25 to 50 Hz and stimulus strengths which excited all classes of preganglionic axons generated eartly short latency responses and late low frequency responses in postganglionic neurones. These late responses occurred predominantly in postganglionic neurones supplying skeletal muscle and in only 30% of postganglionic neurones supplying hairy skin. In most neurones the late discharges could only be elicited by trains of more than 5–10 preganglionic stimuli at frequencies of more than 5–10 Hz. 3. The threshold stimulus strength applied to the preganglionic axons to generate the late discharge was on average 4 times higher than for the early discharge. This finding implies that the late discharge requires the activation of thin preganglionic axons. 4. In most postganglionic neurones, the late discharges could be blocked by atropine, indicating that they were generated by muscarinic action of acetylcholine. The late discharges in a few cutaneous postganglionic neurones were unaffected by atropine. The early discharges were blocked by hexamethonium. 5. The results argue that the transmission of impulses from pre- to postganglionic neurones may be accomplished by two separate pathways acting via nicotinic and muscarinic receptors respectively.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
