ISSN: 1432-1203Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary In a sample of n=160 nonrelated male and female patients suffering from psoriasis vulgaris, blood, serum protein, and enzyme group typings have been carried out and compared with healthy controls from the same area (Rheinland-Pfalz). Marked statistically significant differences between patients and controls were found in none of the genetic blood polymorphisms considered here. However, combining previously published data from various authors with our own, significant associations between this skin disease and genetic polymorphisms such as MN, Gc, Gm(2), red cell acid phosphatase, and red cell phosphoglucomutase (PGM1) were seen. The possible reasons for these associations are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1203Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary Fifteen polymorphic systems of the blood (ABO, MNSs, Rhesus, P, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, Hp, Gc, Gm, Inv, aP, PGM1, EsD, and 6-PGD) were examined in 191 unrelated male and female patients suffering from malignant melanoma. These polymorphic systems were compared with the corresponding phenotype and gene frequencies of controls from the same geographical area (Rhineland-Palatinate). The only associations discovered were the ABO and Gm polymorphisms: The incidence of O and Gm(-1) phenotypes in patients is obviously higher than in controls. These observations agree with the findings in other population samples from Germany and Bulgaria.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1203Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary In 239 German patients with atopic conditions (atopic dermatitis, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, and acute urticaria) the phenotype and gene distribution of 15 genetic blood polymorphisms (ABO, MNSs, Rhesus, P, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, Hp, Gc, Gm, Inv, aP, PGM1, EsD, and 6-PGD) were analyzed and compared with those in 151 selected controls (individuals clinically free of allergic conditions and without allergy in the family history). The incidence of blood group antigens A and B was somewhat higher in patients than in controls. These observations are in accordance with the results of previous studies in other populations. In addition, our observation favor the hypothesis that there are also associations between the phenotypes Jk (a-b+), Inv(1) and red cell acid phosphatase aP a and aP AP on the one hand and atopic disposition on the other. The possible reasons for these associations are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-2013Keywords: Passive hyperthermia ; Fever ; Hypothalamus cooling ; Humoral immune responseSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract In rats implanted with chronic hypothalamic thermodes and immunized with sheep erythrocytes, body temperature was increased, 4h per day for 2 weeks, either by exposing the animal to external heat or by cooling the preoptic area. The titre of antibodies against sheep erythrocytes was nearly tripled by preoptic cooling but was drastically decreased by heat exposure. These opposing effects of active and passive increases in body temperature indicate that factors other than the change in body temperature must also have played a significant role in modifying the humoral immune response.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0935-6304Keywords: Gas chromatography ; Capillary column ; Split injection, vaporizing ; Glass wool as evaporation aid in split injector ; Chemistry ; Analytical Chemistry and SpectroscopySource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: It has been reported that glass wool packed tightly into the glass liner of a vaporizing injector used in the splitting mode considerably reduces the standard deviation of the results obtained, because of improved evaporation of the sample prior to reaching the split point at the capillary column entrance. This finding could not be reproduced on using the same sample composition as reported in the literature, i.e. methanol/2-ethyl-1-hexanol (1:1).The standard deviations obtained were between 3 and 10% (depending on the conditions selected) and were not influenced significantly by the introduction of glass wool. The peak area ratio (methanol/2-ethyl-1-hexanol) was found to depend on a number of parameters, such as: injector temperature; glass liner internal diameter; syringe handling technique; the relative position of the syringe needle exit and capillary column entrance; the sample volume injected; and the packing of the glass liner. Generally, the area ratio deviated further from the correct one (determined by cold on-column sampling) when the glass liner was packed with glass wool.On the basis of the results, it is speculated that either a complete evaporation of the sample should be achieved (which appears to be impossible under the conditions we used) or, alternatively, the sample should be given the least possible opportunity to evaporate, thus allowing it to enter the column in the form of droplets. The results were worse in terms of precision and accuracy the greater the partition of sample components between the liquid (droplet) and vapor phase. It is concluded that the use of evaporation aids such as glass wool cannot be generally recommended.Additional Material: 5 Tab.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0935-6304Keywords: Pyrolysis capillary, GC ; Microfurnace pyrolyser ; Model molecular thermometer ; Chemistry ; Analytical Chemistry and SpectroscopySource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: A styrene isoprene block copolymer, known as Kraton 1107, is used to study some of the parameters involved in the pyrolysis process. Using a continuous mode microfurnace pyrolysis system interfaced to a capillary gas chromatography system, the effect of pyrolysis temperature and gas flows through the pyrolysis chamber were studied. Comparisons in sample introduction methods were made. Introducing the sample in solution, rather than conventional solid sample introduction, was found to offer some advantages.Additional Material: 6 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
