The dog had responded to treatment, but 9 months later was evaluated for endogenous hyperadrenocorticism, prior to surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. A normal ACTH stimulation test was followed by a high-dose dexamethasone suppression test. Immediately following the intravenous injection of dexamethasone, the dog developed severe anaphylactic shock and died. The postmortem examination findings supported the diagnosis of anaphylaxis.New information provided: The anaphylaxis in this dog was fulminating and by-passed the usual early signs of drug hypersensitivity. This is the first case in the veterinary literature reporting on dexamethasone as the cause of this dog's catastrophic event.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Careful selection of both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients for intervention based on neurological symptoms, as well as anatomical and hemodynamic considerations, is essential. Methods: To achieve proper results with angioplasty and stenting, standard endovascular techniques are modified for the unique anatomical considerations of the VA. Several technical nuances are described here to aid in the endoluminal revascularization of the VA. Results: Technical success (〈50% residual diameter stenosis) rates ranging from 94 to 98% and low rates of periprocedural complications have been achieved with VA angioplasty and stenting in select series with angiographic follow-up. The long-term success in those series is limited by the high (10–43%) rate of recurrent stenosis. Proper placement of the stent can reduce the risk of periprocedural complications and restenosis. In-stent stenosis appears most commonly during the first 6–12 months after stent placement, but does not appear to correlate with return of neurological symptoms. We believe the high rate of recurrent stenosis makes follow-up angiography essential, especially in the first 12 months after the procedure. Conclusion: Endovascular VA angioplasty with stent placement provides an innovative approach to treat a difficult clinical entity. Evolving therapies, including drug-eluting stents or bioresorbable stents, may prove to provide better long-term results.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The determination of the appearance energies from scans of the ion signal as a function of electron energy in the near-threshold region of each ion utilized a fitting and analysis procedure that has recently been successfully applied to the determination of appearance energies of singly and multiply charged rare-gas ions and several molecular ions and cluster ions. The experimentally determined appearance energies are in good agreement (i) with theoretical calculations that we carried out using standard quantum chemistry codes and (ii) with appearance energy values listed in standard reference data tables (to the extent that tabulated values are available). We find isotope shifts for all three systems ranging from a few meV for the parent ions to a few hundred meV for the fragment ions. The deuterated species always have the higher appearance energy. The present results for H2O/D2O and C6H6/C6D6 do not confirm the larger isotope effects that were reported earlier by Snegursky and Zavilopulo [Nucl. Instrum. Meth. Phys. Res. B 126, 301 (1997)]. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Phylogenetic analyses, using 482 bp of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA and 461 bp of the control region of 16 Diplodus species and Oblada melanura, Pagellus bogaraveo and Pagellus acarne, all close relatives of Diplodus, identified the two representatives of Pagellus as the sister group of Diplodus. Oblada melanura was confirmed as the sister taxon of D. puntazzo, despite its different dental morphology and ecology. Within the genus Diplodus, three clades were identified, the first containing D. annularis and D. bellottii, the second D. vulgaris and D. prayensis, and the third comprising three subclades. These were formed by O. melanura clustering with D. puntazzo, D. fasciatus with D. cervinus, and by the Diplodus sargus sub-species assemblage which also included the West Atlantic taxa D. argenteus, D. bermudensis, D. holbrooki, and the Red Sea endemic D. noct. All members of the D. sargus assemblage were genetically closely related. Among them, D. sargus lineatus from the Cape Verde islands was resolved as most ancestral branch, pointing to the possibility that the diversification and spread of the D. sargus assemblage originated in this region. The hypothesis of stepwise speciation following colonization events within the D. sargus complex is fully supported by phylogenetic reconstruction.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: The temperature relationship of routine metabolic rate (Rr) of non-feeding, non-growing Coregonus lavaretus larvae between 2 and 15°C is characterized by Q10-values ranging from l.8-2.45. The rate of growth, based on weight determinations, of first-feeding larvae amounted to 3.5, 7.6 and 9.4% day-1 at 5, 10 and 12°C respectively, from which Q10-values between 4.0 and 4.8 can be calculated. The rate of increase of muscle mass between 5 and 10°C, based on the determination of the cross-sectional area of inner muscle fibres, resulted in a Q10-value of 4.5. Water temperature influenced the pattern of growth of the inner muscle fibres. At hatching, after 360 day degrees, total muscle mass of larvae reared at 4 and 8°C was independent of temperature, but at 4°C the rate of mass increase owed more to hyperplasia (increase in fibre number) than to hypertrophy (increase in fibre mass), whereas at 8°C the opposite was the case. The calculation of power budgets (including the metabolic cost of growth) of first-feeding larvae yielded net conversion efficiencies (K2) increasing with temperature from 46.3% at 5°C to 54.7% at 12°C. Comparing our data with literature data two general conclusions can be drawn. (1) In first-feeding larvae the net, but not the gross, conversion efficiency of food energy increases with temperature. This is due to net energy input being characterized by a much higher Q10-value than energy expenditures. (2) In embryos of freshwater fish so far investigated hyperplasia plays a greater role in the increase of fibre mass than hypertrophy at the lower temperature, whereas in embryos of marine fish hyperplasia prevails at the higher temperature. It is suggested that this discrepancy correlates with the high concentration of free amino acids in the eggs of marine species which provide an additional, easily available, source of metabolic energy absent in freshwater species.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
