Background : The effects of lactulose and polyethylene glycol on colonic transit are poorly established.Aim: To assess the effects of these laxatives on colonic transit in normal subjects. Methods : Colonic transit (mean residence time, cumulative counts in stool, counts remaining in the proximal or distal colon) was measured scintigraphically in normal subjects on the second and third day of a 3-day ingestion of 67–134 g/day lactulose, or 59 g/day polyethylene glycol. Results : At similar stool weight (lactulose: 653 ± 120 g/day; polyethylene glycol: 522 ± 66 g/day), transit was significantly slower during 99 g/day lactulose when compared with 59 g/day polyethylene glycol; this was most pronounced in the distal colon (mean residence time: lactulose – 403 ± 55 min; polyethylene glycol – 160 ± 41.9 min). Short chain fatty acid concentration in 24-h stool correlated significantly with counts remaining in the distal colon at 12 h(r = 0.79, P = 0.001). Increasing lactulose doses were significantly associated with increasing stool weight (r = 0.79) and shorter mean residence time in the total (r = −0.56) and distal colon (r = −0.64). The sum of faecal carbohydrates plus short chain fatty acids was associated with stool weight (r = 0.95, P 〈 0.001).Conclusion : Lactulose accelerates colonic transit. However, compared with polyethylene glycol, transit during lactulose is prolonged.

Abstract Using data published by the Chinese Statistical Bureau, an elaborated version of theCobb‐Douglas production function was developed in [3] to express the dependence that industrial production has on classic economic factors, ownership‐related variables and geographic location. In this paper, we reexamine the same data using the new Boolean‐based methodology of Logical Analysis of Data (LAD). The LAD models detect numerous characteristic patterns for explaining changes in productivity, strongly confirm and complement the conclusions of [3], and lead to a decision support system aimed at increasing productivity in China's provinces.

Abstract Objectives: Investigation of the reliability of Procalcitonin (PCT) for differential diagnosis of acute rejections and non-viral infections in heart and lung transplanted patients.¶Design: Retrospective study.¶Setting: Transplant intensive care unit (ICU) at a university hospital.¶Patients: 57 heart, 18 lung and 3 heart-lung transplant patients.¶Measurements: PCT was measured in plasma samples of heart and lung transplanted patients using a commercial immuno-luminescence assay and was compared with values of C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocytes (WBC).¶Results: PCT was elevated in patients suffering from bacterial and fungal infections. The magnitude of values was clearly associated with the severity of the infection. Rejections and viral infections did not interfere with the PCT release.¶Conclusion: PCT is a reliable predictor with discriminating power for non-viral systemic infections in patients after heart and/or lung transplantation. PCT allows an early differential diagnosis between rejection (AR) and bacterial/fungal infection (IF) and thus a rapid and focused therapeutic intervention. It avoids unnecessary antibiotic treatment which could be toxic for the graft itself in patients with rejection only. PCT provides vital information early to clinicians and allows them to improve the management of bacterial/fungal infections in immunocompromized transplant patients. PCT thus facilitates and improves the outcome of survival rate and the quality of life in the postoperative period of patients with heart and/or lung grafts.
