    Description:
Students are expected to obtain a matriculation diploma during their high school years. Throughout the world, it is considered as a precondition to gaining access to higher education. However, those who failed to meet this criterion can employ, in some cases, "second-chance" alternatives - either to obtain a diploma at an older age, or to enter specific academic programs that do not require one. The literature on second-chance alternatives tends to concentrate on these programs’ evaluation. It rarely addresses the overall effect of these programs on inequality of educational opportunities (IEO). The current study focuses on Israelis who failed to gain a matriculation diploma at their high school graduation and contemplate on the effects that ethnic differences between them play on their chances to enter higher education. Based on a new Panel survey (2012-2016), we found that Israelis from affluent ethnic backgrounds were able to increase their chances to access higher education using "second-chance alternatives". Those from minority groups, most notably Arabs, were less likely to benefit from these alternatives. While originally aimed at improving higher education enrolment for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, these "second-chance alternatives" resulted in an increase of ethnic-based IEO. Considering the lower rates of Israelis who utilise them, we deduct that these programs "failed" to accomplish their original purpose. However, we argue that they merit further research since their understanding can benefit researchers and policy makers.

    Description:
New actors, actants, and activities have entered journalism's spaces in recent years. While this has raised the potential for the disruption of existing social orders, such heterogeneous assemblages also provide fruitful grounds for substantive innovation within "trading zones." This article explores one such potential zone, the code-sharing platform GitHub, delineating the primary actors oriented around the boundary object of "news," the objectives of their projects, the nature of their collaborations, and their use of software licenses. The analysis examines attributes of 88,776 news-oriented project repositories, with a smaller subsample subjected to a manual content analysis. Findings show that this trading zone consisted primarily of journalistic outsiders; repositories focused on technological solutions to distributional challenges and efforts that made journalism more transparent; that there was limited direct trade via the use of collaborative affordances on the platform; and that only a minority of repositories employed a permissive license favored by open-source advocates. This leads to a broader conclusion that while GitHub may be discursively important within journalism and certainly provides an avenue for actors to enter journalism’s periphery, it offers a limited pathway for those peripheral actors to move closer to the center of journalism. That, in turn, impacts the platform's - and its users' - ability to reconfigure if not spur a reimagining of journalism’s meanings, conventions, and allocations of different forms of capital.

    Description:
This article analyzes the context in which the transfer of Jewish polish refugees from Irán to México took place in 1943, under the tragic consequences of the Germán invasions to the URSS and the implementation of the "Final Solution" of the Jewish people, accorded in Wanssee. In the framework of the rescue agreements and policies adopted during the Second World War, this anide deais with three main problematíc axis: the specific scope of the agreements taken in the Bermuda Conference held in January 1943 for the rescue of Jews; the comparadve analysis between its implementadons and the measures taken to transfer Polish refugees from Asia to México; and the substanüal contribudon of this policy. The specific approach to the Jewish dimensión in the rescue policy throws light into the differentíal behavior held by the Allies during the War and the Holocaust.

    Description:
In Computational Communication Science (CCS) researchers grapple with intricate ethical challenges arising from the collection and analysis of complex data sets, often including sensitive or copyrighted data. Taking into consideration differences between the two main lines of philosophical reasoning in the realm of (research) ethics - deontology and consequentialism - we argue that ethical challenges faced in CCS are multidimensional and, hence, require multiple perspectives and approaches. Our general considerations are complemented by an empirical study that aims to assess the nature, prevalence, and discussion of ethical issues in CCS literature. Through a manual content analysis of 476 CCS publications, we shed light on ethical challenges as well as reflections thereof by CCS researchers. Notably, we find that only 5.88% of studies explicitly address general ethical considerations. Ethical review processes are also only mentioned in 6.51% of the considered studies, with the majority focusing on specific ethical procedures, such as obtaining informed consent, data anonymization measures, or debriefing. This suggests that, in the absence of consensus and field-specific standards, researchers in CCS prioritize context-specific ethical procedures, emphasizing the importance of flexibility in addressing ethical considerations.

    Description:
Although other social media platforms have seen a steeper increase in users recently, Facebook is still the social networking site with the largest number of users worldwide. A large number of studies from the social and behavioral sciences have investigated the antecedents, types, and consequences of its use. In addition or as an alternative to self-reports from users, many studies have used data from the platform itself, usually collected via its Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). However, with the drastic reduction of data access via the Facebook APIs following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, this data source has essentially become unavailable to academic researchers. Hence, there is a need for different modes of data access for what Freelon (2018) has called the 'post-API age'. One promising approach is to directly collaborate with platform users to ask them to share (parts of) their personal Facebook data with researchers. This paper presents experiences from two studies employing such approaches. The first used a browser plugin to unobtrusively observe Facebook use while users are active. The second asked participants to export and share parts of their personal Facebook data archive. While both approaches yield promising insights suitable to extend or replace self-reports, both also entail specific limitations. We discuss and compare the unique advantages and limitations of both approaches and provide a list of recommendations for future research.

In Computational Communication Science (CCS) researchers grapple with intricate ethical challenges arising from the collection and analysis of complex data sets often including sensitive or copyrighted data. Rooted in two opposing lines of philosophical arguments - deontology and consequentialism - we argue that CCS research is particularly difficult to be projected onto this ethical spectrum. Our study aims to empirically assess the nature and prevalence of provided arguments and influencing factors for ethical decision-making in CCS research. Through a manual content analysis of 476 CCS studies, sampled from a corpus of 22,375 collected communication science articles, we shed light on data sharing practices and ethical reflections of CCS researchers. Findings indicate large room for maneuver. The majority of studies (89.50%) chose not to share their data, while 6.93% chose to share their data either full or partially. Only 5.88% of studies explicitly addressed general ethical considerations. Ethical review processes were mentioned by 6.51% of studies, with the majority pointing at ethical procedures such as obtaining informed consent, data anonymization measures, or debriefing. This suggests that researchers in CCS prioritize context-specific ethical procedures in the absence of field-specific standards, emphasizing the importance of flexibility in addressing ethical considerations.

    Description:
The replication crisis has highlighted the importance of reproducibility and replicability in the social and behavioral sciences, including in communication research. While there have been some discussions of and studies on replications in communication research, the extent of this work is significantly lower than in psychology. The key reasons for this limitation are the differences between the disciplines in the topics commonly studied and in the methods and data commonly used in communication research. Communication research often investigates dynamic topics and uses methods (e.g., content analysis) and data types (e.g., media content and social media data) that are not used, or, at least, are much less frequently used, in other fields. These specific characteristics of communication research must be considered and require a more nuanced understanding of reproducibility and replicability. This thematic issue includes commentaries presenting different perspectives, as well as methodological and empirical work investigating the reproducibility and replicability of a wide range of communication research, including surveys, experiments, systematic literature reviews, and studies that involve social media or audio data. The articles in this issue acknowledge the diversity and unique features of communication research and present various ways of improving its reproducibility and replicability, as well as our understanding thereof.

    Description:
Science strives towards a credible and comprehensive understanding of the world around us. Across disciplines within the social and behavioural sciences (and beyond), limitations in the implementation of the scientific approach have been identified in recent studies, showing low replicability of many results. This is an issue for knowledge accumulation, theory-building, and evidence-based decision and policy making. Researchers have proposed several solutions to address these issues, focusing mainly on improving statistical methods, data quality, and transparency. However, relatively little attention has been paid to another key aspect that affects replicability: language. Across fields, language plays a central role in all steps of the research cycle and is a critical communication tool among researchers. Neglecting its role may reduce replicability and limit our understanding of theoretically interesting differences and similarities across languages. After identifying these challenges, we provide some recommendations and an outlook on how replicability challenges related to language may be addressed.

    Description:
Climate change is a major political challenge affecting millions of people worldwide. Journalists- while following media logic - have a strong responsibility to inform the public of the scientific evidence on the causes and consequences of climate change and to explain the motivations driving the climate policies under discussion. However, within hybrid media systems, journalists increasingly compete for attention with climate stakeholders, who tend to follow a political logic in climate communication and bypass journalism to share their perspectives on climate change. Despite this dynamic, the extent to which the climate communication of media organizations and stakeholders diverges in terms of content and focus remains largely unexplored, as does whether their topics and communication styles show signs of convergence. This article addresses these gaps by comparing how journalistic media and climate stakeholders communicate about climate change on social media and by examining the user engagement their content creates. We conducted a manual quantitative content analysis of visual posts about climate change published by media organizations and climate stakeholders in Germany on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube during the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai (N = 1,050). The results deepen our understanding of the national climate discourse in Germany and show that journalistic content in climate communication adheres strongly to media logic, presenting climate change in a more event-oriented, personalized, and negative manner. However, climate stakeholders' communication is characterized by political logic, using strategic framing and focusing less on current climate events.

Abstract The aim of this investigation was to explore changes in caries prevalence and gingival health in adolescents who immigrated from Ethiopia to Israel, experiencing an abrupt cultural transition. Fifty adolescents, aged 15–17, born in Ethiopia, and 196 adolescents born in Israel were examined. All were pupils of a boarding school, sharing the same living conditions and eating schedules. The results showed a nearly six fold difference in caries prevalence between the Ethiopian and the Israeli group (1.5/9.6). No differences could be seen clinically between the Ethiopians who immigrated more than 1 yr ago and those who arrived within the last year. Radio-graphically, a significant difference was found between the two Ethiopian subgroups. Those who arrived more than 1 yr ago had nearly three times more initial caries. Total inter proximal caries scores for the Israeli group, Ethiopians who arrived more than 1 yr ago, and newly arrived Ethiopians were 6.9, 5.7 and 2.1 respectively. Oral hygiene was poorer in the Ethiopian group than in the Israeli group; little difference was found in gingival health. Change in dietary habits, more meals per day and more frequent consumption of fermentable carbohydrates, could have been the cause of the change in caries rate.

The carbohydrate tolerance was routinely investigated in fifty-two patients with granuloma annulare. Thirteen of the fifty-two cases presented the generalized type and the remaining thirty-nine had the localized form of the disorder. The results obtained in these patients were compared with those revealed in two control groups of patients. The same number of patients of the same sex, age and ethnic group with skin diseases other than granuloma annulare were similarly investigated as were 386 patients with conjunctival micro-aneurysms. Some degree of carbohydrate intolerance was detected in 36.5% of patients with both types of granuloma annulare. However, the incidence of this disturbance in patients with the localized form was no greater than in those with other skin diseases. The important finding in this study was the 76.9% incidence of carbohydrate intolerance in generalized granuloma annulare. This finding was supported by the histopathological changes in the small cutaneous blood vessels of these patients.

Here we describe the characterization of a lipoprotein previously proposed as a potential Bacillus anthracis virulence determinant and vaccine candidate. This protein, designated MntA, is the solute-binding component of a manganese ion ATP-binding cassette transporter. Coupled proteomic-serological screen of a fully virulent wild-type B. anthracis Vollum strain, confirmed that MntA is expressed both in vitro and during infection. Expression of MntA is shown to be independent of the virulence plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. An mntA deletion, generated by allelic replacement, results in complete loss of MntA expression and its phenotypic analysis revealed: (i) impaired growth in rich media, alleviated by manganese supplementation; (ii) increased sensitivity to oxidative stress; and (iii) delayed release from cultured macrophages. The ΔmntA mutant expresses the anthrax-associated classical virulence factors, lethal toxin and capsule, in vitro as well as in vivo, and yet the mutation resulted in severe attenuation; a 104-fold drop in LD50 in a guinea pig model. MntA expressed in trans allowed to restore, almost completely, the virulence of the ΔmntA B. anthracis strain. We propose that MntA is a novel B. anthracis virulence determinant essential for the development of anthrax disease, and that B. anthracisΔmntA strains have the potential to serve as platform for future live attenuated vaccines.
