    Nanometer-scale recording on an organic-complex thin film with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) under ambient conditions is demonstrated. The recording marks are made by applying external voltage pulses between the tip and the highly ordered pyrolytic graphite substrate. A 30×30 nm2 STM image with recorded marks is given. The average recorded mark is 1.3 nm in diameter, which corresponds to a data storage density of about 1013 bits/cm2. The current–voltage characteristics measured by the STM show an insulator behavior for the unrecorded regions, and a conductor behavior for the recorded regions, which indicates that the data are recorded by local change of the electrical property of the films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Permanent magnets based on the compositions Pr15Fe79B6, Nd15Fe79B6, Pr15Fe62.5Co16Al1B5.5, and Nd15Fe62.5Co16Al1B5.5 have been fabricated employing conventional powder metallurgical processes. Proper heat treatment has been found to improve magnetic properties. For example, in magnets of composition Pr-Fe-Co-Al-B, the heat treatment optimized in this study improved Br and (BH)max by about 5% and 10%, respectively, in comparison with conventional heat treatment reported in the literature. The temperature coefficients of magnetic properties have also been improved through Co and Al substitutions.

    Nd2Co17 alloy exhibits a saturation magnetization about 30% higher than that of Sm2Co17 at room temperature. However, the former is not a useful material for permanent magnet fabrication due to its basal plane anisotropy near room temperature. In this study, an attempt is made to investigate the effect of partial substitution of Nd2Co17 with other elements. In particular, alloys of the compositions Nd2−xSmxCo13Fe4 and Nd2Co13Fe4−xTx (where T=Zr or Mn) have been examined. The results obtained in this investigation show several interesting trends in the behavior of these alloys. Substitution of ∼20% Sm in Nd2−xSmxCo13Fe4 decreases the spin-reorientation temperatures from 613 to 224 K. Further, an increase in x up to 1.0 causes only a moderate decrease in the saturation magnetization but results in a considerable enhancement of the anisotropy field. Typical thermomagnetic curves of Nd2Co13Fe4−xTx (T=Zr,Mn) exhibit spin-reorientation temperatures. These results are discussed in terms of preferential substitution of Zr or Mn in this system.

    Efficient light emission was obtained in a silole-based organic light-emitting diode. A high luminous current efficiency of 20 cd/A, corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 8%, was achieved. The apparent violation of the upper theoretical limit of 5.5% for the external quantum efficiency of a singlet emitter is discussed. With a suitably designed cathode, a high power efficiency of ∼14 lm/W was obtained. A strong dependence of the power efficiency on the thickness of Alq3 layer is also observed and explained. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Ultraviolet emission was obtained from N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine. Gallium nitride was used as a hole-blocking layer to contain the holes. A peak emission wavelength of 400 nm was measured. The external quantum efficiency is about 0.35%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
