Summary I want to express my sincere thanks to those who gave me the opportunity here today. In closing, I encourage you not to resist change just for the purpose of maintaining the status quo. Instead, if the proposed changes are well-conceived, are openly and freely debated, and represent progress in our profession, then they should be fine tuned and implemented with enthusiasm. Thanks again and Godspeed.

Abstract To determine the etiology and outcome of patients with small bowel obstruction after a colon resection for benign and malignant diseases, the medical records of 118 patients who underwent 120 laparotomies for small bowel obstruction were reviewed. Contrary to previous reports, benign adhesions were responsible for the obstruction in all patients with a history of benign colon disease, 82.6 percent of patients with a history of adenocarcinoma of the colon without known recurrence, and 30.1 percent of patients with known recurrent malignancy. The morbidity and mortality was more related to the etiology of the obstruction rather than the preoperative delay or operative procedure performed. Considering the high likelihood of adhesive obstruction in patients with a history of, or known, metastatic colorectal carcinoma, it is suggested that these not deter surgeons from aggressive early surgical intervention in these patients who develop small bowel obstruction.

Abstract A retrospective review of 637 consecutive colonoscopies with polypectomy in 526 patients was performed to determine the association of small polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon with more proximal colonic neoplasms. All colonic polyps were proximal to the sigmoid colon in 117 procedures. Proximal neoplasms were found in 32 percent of patients with a single polyp in the rectum or sigmoid colon. The incidence increased to 83 percent for those with three or more polyps. The occurrence of proximal colonic neoplasms was not affected by the size or histologic type of the rectosigmoid polyps. These findings would suggest that total colonic evaluation be considered in all patients with a polyp in the rectum or sigmoid colon regardless of the size or histologic type of the polyp.

Summary The pine engraver,Ips pini (Say), was found to produce toluene and 2-phenylethanol when boring into fresh pine logs. The hypotheses that phenylalanine is a precursor of these compounds and that beetles without their symbiotic microorganisms can perform these conversions were confirmed by treating wild and axencially-reared males and females topically with L-phenyl-d5-alanine. Extracts of these beetles invariably contained deuterio-toluene, and extracts of males contained deuterio-2-phenylethanol as well.

Abstract A study ofper os inoculated larvae was undertaken to determine if the entomopathogenic fungus,Beauveria bassiana, is able to infect the Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata, via the alimentary tract. Surface orper os inoculated larvae which were immediately surface sterilized post inoculation did not succumb to infection, whereas those larvae not sterilized became infected. Histological studies of fed or starved, agnotobiotic (with microbial flora) and axenic larvae revealed that conidia can germinate in the gut regardless of the presence of gut microflora. However, infection via the alimentary tract was never observed in fed larvae and only noted in a single starved individual. It is concluded that infections ofper os inoclated larvae occurred after surface contamination of the integument by viable conidia contained in the frass. The rate of food passage through the gut is probably important in preventingper os infections.

Abstract Mountain pine beetles,Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, and California five-spined ips,Ips paraconfusus Lanier, were reared axenically from surface-sterilized eggs on aseptic pine phloem. After 24 hr in host logs, axenip femaleD. ponderosae and maleI. paraconfusus produced the aggregation pheromones,trans-verbenol (D. ponderosae), and ipsenol and ipsdienol (I. paraconfusus). Emergent, axenically reared maleD. ponderosae contained normal amounts of the pheromoneexo-brevicomin. Axenic femaleD. ponderosae treated with juvenile hormone or exposed to vapors of α-pinene, produced the pheromonetrans-verbenol. By 25–35 days after eclosion, axenic females exposed to α-pinene vapors produced over six times as muchtrans-verbenol as wild females, suggesting that while microorganisms in wild females may producetrans-verbenol, they may also inhibit production of the pheromone or use it as a substrate.
