ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: We have expanded the molecular theory of geminate recombination of charge-carrier pairs to the consideration of arbitrary Coulomb cutoff lengths. The results on the simple cubic and square lattices exhibit behavior typical of that observed experimentally. This behavior is controlled by a set of molecular parameters as well as the initial distribution of the electron about the hole. It is shown also that the temperature dependence in the infinite-sink limit is qualitatively Onsager-like, but does not quantitatively match the predictions of the Onsager formulation, reflecting previously noted deficiencies in the continuum approximation. It is also shown that the two parameters φ0 and r0 of the Onsager model cannot, in general, be regarded as giving the actual, physical initial quantum efficiency and initial separation of the charge carriers, respectively. In the course of these calculations, methods are developed for calculating two- and three-dimensional lattice Green's functions in the presence of an external electric field. Analytical and numerical methods are established, as well as recursion relations useful in calculation. A relationship is exhibited and utilized between two- and three-dimensional field-dependent Green's functions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Group A received bronchodilators only (n= 20). group B received sodium cromoglycate (SCG) (n= 20) and group C received oral and/or inhaled corticosteroids (n= 20).Results Oral steroid treatment (2 mg /kg/day). given at the onset of the asthma attack, resulted in significant reduction in the ECP and EPX levels in all the children. However, these reduced ECP and EPX levels were not sustained in the children, even in those who continued on maintenance steroid treatment. Significant, but inconsistent, correlations between ECP, EPX with total eosinophil count, percentage eosinophils and spirometry parameters were observed at the different time-points. Tryptase levels were normal in all subjects. There were no significant correlations between myeloperoxidase levels and the spirometry parameters or eosinophil parameters. Serial monitoring of ECP and EPX levels was found to be of some use in predicting clinical outcome in certain steroid-dependent asthmatics (group C) but of no value in the mild asthmatics (group A).Conclusion While elevation of ECP, EPX and MPO in the serum of childhood asthmatics suggests ongoing inflammation and may inversely correlate with spirometry parameters in some patients, the relationship between these markers and airway function is not a simple one.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

As part of a validation study of a new symptom assessment instrument, inpatients and out-patients with prostate, colon, breast or ovarian cancer were evaluated using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale and other measures of psychological condition, performance status, symptom distress and overall quality of life. The mean age of the 243 avaluable patients was 55.5 years (range 23–86 years); over 60% were women and almost two-thirds had metastatic disease. The Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score was≤80 in 49.8% and 123 were inpatients at the time of assessment. Across tumour types, 40–80% experienced lack of energy, pain, feeling drowsy, dry mouth, insomnia, or symptoms indicative of psychological distress. Although symptom characteristics were variable, the proportion of patients who described a symptom as relatively intense or frequent always exceeded the proportion who reported it as highly distressing. The mean (±SD, range) number of symptoms per patient was 11.5±6.0 (0–25); inpatients had more symptoms than outpatients (13.5±5.4 vs. 9.7±6.0, p〈0.002) and those with KPS≤80 had more symptoms than those with KPS〉80 (14.8±5.5 vs. 9.2±4.9, p〈0.0001). The number of symptoms was highly associated with heightened psychological distress and poorer quality of life (for example, r=0.67 for the relationship with the Functional Living Index-Cancer, a QOL measure). These data clarify the prevalence and characteristics of cancer-related symptoms and suggest that the number of symptoms per patient may be a useful quality of life indicator.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
